New Clinton Ohio Ad: "She's worked the night shift, too"
Alright I think this is a pretty good ad and I know what the ad is TRYING to say (that Senator Clinton has worked late and hard for ordinary people). But does the last line the last line "She’s worked the night shift, too" make anyone else squirm a little? It just seems like some could take it as she has actually had to work a night shift in a tough service sector job or something which given her relatively privileged life I would guess (but could be wrong) that she hasn't.

This isn't flame bait, just something that caught my attention when I watched the ad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7g0NxL2g-M&eurl=http://thepage.time.com/

You pour coffee, fix hair, you work the night shift at the local hospital. You’re often overworked, underpaid, and sometimes overlooked.
But not by everyone.
One candidate has put forth an American family agenda to make things easier for everyone who works so hard.
Universal healthcare.
Increased daycare.
And help with elder health care.
She understands. She’s worked the night shift, too.
I’m Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

2. Hillary has never had a regular job, much less one that has a Night shift
It's damn funny that Hillarites care more about Obama's words, which are at least truthful, than Hillary's words, which are very often not anywhere near the truth.

They would rather call Obama a plagiarist than admit that Hillary is a full-on LIAR.

Even her detractors will admit that HRC is one of the hardest-working Senators in office, routinely working long hours and well into the night.

12. which of her myriad jobs(Corporate Lawyer, First Lady, Senator) had a night shift?
Just because a Session of the Senate may run late does not in any way constitute a Night Shift.

It is a slap in the face of any American who does work the Night Shift for Hillary to dishonestly make such a claim.

70. How about the job she had gutting fish on an Alaskan pier? Real enough for you?
Did she have to do it at night? I don't know, I don't have a copy of her work schedule. But plainly, she's worked very hard in her life and has a great appreciation for working people - borne out of personal experience.

What grueling, gritty, manual labor jobs has Barack Obama done?

She has not only shot a duck, but has also cleaned fish!

Uhm, cleaning fish is also considered *entertainment*, as part of fishing, and is also known as "being able to cook for one's self".

As far as Barack goes, the dude worked as a Teacher.

Oh, please, please, defame that profession's hours and work ethic, as I'd love to see the fireworks.

3. She is one of the hardest working Senators there is.
Heck, when she was in Washington a couple of weeks ago, she came to a late night rally (got here around 9:30 pm), was there for at least an hour and a half, then was up in the morning to do a TV interview (only candidate who accepted the invitation), and then proceeded on to a town hall meeting afterwards. 3 activities within 13 hours. So yeah, I think it's ok. McCain and Obama were here, one event each, and not at night.

38. Not necessarily true, based on percentage of missed votes.
HRC is at 27.1% missed votes, with both Obama and McCain having a higher percentage of missed votes. There are over 90 senators who have a better voting record.

11. Why not? She had a town hall meeting here WITH nurses
That was her specific audience. Do you somehow think that Obama or McCain care more about nurses than she does? (Not saying that either doesn't care about nurses, BTW).

A friend of mine has a friend back in NY who is a nurse, and she makes $12 an hour, works all the OT she can, and won't vote for a Democrat, just to spite herself, I guess.

OTOH, I have a sister-in-law who is a nurse, and another who is an OT, and they both support Hillary.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 05:05 PM by FLDem5
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x95274

My initial response to this ad was a little outrage - I've calmed down a little now, but I still stand by my words:

First, yes, I support Barack Obama.

However, having worked the 11-7 shift in a diner to put myself through school (yes, going to class after work smelling like grease) for 3 years, this commercial pisses me off. Some rich lady married to someone powerful, sitting in a nice office with staff to bring her hot coffee compares herself to a nurse or waitress working 3rd shift?!

I can't imagine anyone who has ACTUALLY WORKED A FULL NIGHT SHIFT will think that someone staying up late to catch up on work is anything remotely close to the same thing.

Holy crap - she needs to fire someone. That was insulting.

15. Honest question: Isn't 11:00 pm to 7:00 called "the graveyard shift"?
I think 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM can be called a Night Shift for example. I used to work in Psychiatric Half Way Houses, when I worked after midnight through dawn we called it an "overnight shift", having to work past 10:00 PM qualified as a night shift to us. I guess it's semantics, but that is the usage of the phrases that we used in our work world.

it was 7-3, 3-11, 11-7.

11-7 was the shitty shift to work.

the online dictionary:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/night+shift

Noun 1. night shift - the work shift during the night (as midnight to 8 a.m.)
graveyard shift
duty period, work shift, shift - the time period during which you are at work
2. night shift - workers who work during the night (as midnight to 8 a.m.)
graveyard shift
shift - a crew of workers who work for a specific period of time

20. In a lot of places
it's 12am to 8am - graveyard
8am to 4pm - day shift
4pm to 12am - night shift or evening shift.

But these can move around +/- a couple of hours.

And then there is military watches... and they get really weird (4 hour shifts, on off on on off off etc)

What unmitigated bullshit. In undergrad school, I worked the ER and went to school full time during the day. In law school, I have various jobs: I clerked, danced in a bar, and worked for a private investigation firm and STILL finish law school in 3 years ~~ and some of those classes were done at night school so I could work a day job at times, too. My late husband got thru law school by driving cab and studying by the dome light.

GMAFB, Hillary...you have NO clue what it means to work the fucking night shift! What a fucking insult to those who have really had to do stuff like this!

Comparing myself, or Mrs. Clinton to the poor guy/gal pouring coffee or working at 3:00am in the hospital for $9.00 an hour is a total insult.

Barack Obama *ALSO* works the "night shift"... but he's not claiming to currently be in a similar situation to those people.

45. I think the whole idea that her "base" is blue-collar women
is sort of buying into a sexist sterotype in and of itself.

I've heard about the "good old days" where girls in school on career day had to pick between mommy, nurse and teacher.

But this ad is such a sterotype of what these womens' lives are like, it's sort of offensive.

I mean, hell, I'm a biologist and I've worked on surveys where I had to get up at 3. I know women who have worked in factories, painted houses, fixed cars, and done other non-traditional blue-collar jobs. Hillary's blue-collar work experience was working in a cannery. This ad just seems SO patronizing.

(Also, if she's talking to waitresses, hairdressers, and nurses, hairdressers never work the night shift and nurses are pretty well educated. )

The majority of all those jobs she showed are not dominated by woman??

Sexist? Its REALITY...

Im sure it would be better if the ad showed a woman as a line backer in the NFL or someone chopping wood..
Because most woman relate to that.. :eyes:

59. That's because NAFTA put many of the male night shift standards out of work.
Factory work often ran 1st, 2nd and often 3rd shifts. Those jobs were dominated by men... men which lost their jobs when the factories closed.

65. And furthermore
it bugs me that you can't tell where her career begins and her husband's ends.

There are many examples of female politicians who got where they are 100% on their own strength. I know she helped Bill out with his career, but he definitely helped her out too.

Like, for example, did she get her Wal-Mart job on her own merits, or because she was married to the governor?

Yeah, it's a touchy question, but I want a woman president who got where she was 100% by herself, and not on someone else's coattails. :(

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 06:06 PM by No Surrender
And feeding Chelsea or changing her diaper in the middle of the night don't count.

What a pant load.

On edit - Wolfson answered my question:

So has Clinton worked the night shift? Spokesman Howard Wolfson said Tuesday that "the reference is to her working late at night at her desk."

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/02/19/clinton-ad-shes-worked-the-night-shift-too/?eref=ib_politicalticker

What an insult to people actually working night shifts!

52. she hasn't got a clue about what being forced to work the night shift is like-
- when it is what you have to do to survive-

but this is 'politics'.

Or what it is like not to be able to afford any kind of decent child care, or what trying to live on minimum wage is like, or being a single parent really is like, or what it feels like to have to choose between a roll of toilet paper and a loaf of bread.

but again - this is 'politics'

I don't pay much attention to political advertising.

67. Here's the meat:
Jay Carson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, told The Caucus that line does not refer to any hourly paid job Mrs. Clinton has held. Instead, it’s a “rhetorical reference” to her long nights as a lawyer, First Lady and now as a senator. “She is certainly known for her work ethic,” he said.

As a woman that worked 11pm to 7am in a shit-hole diner in Raleigh NC for several years. I would LOVE to know what HRC's idea of a night-shift is. Goddamn it.

on edit: lol. A letterman clip? My "favorite summer job" is hardly middle class 3rd shift. What a joke.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) just told David Letterman her favorite summer job was as a young woman gutting salmon in Alaska.

During the task, which she dubbed "sliming fish," she wore hip boots and an apron.

too many women, and not enough sweaty, manly men featured!!

These are not exact words, but barely off the mark...I know everyone loves to mock Tweety over this recurring theme he likes to employ, but this is Exhibit A and the prosecution rests in the Tweety is a Sexist Pig case!

85. I'm not getting this night shift thing.
Is it supposed to be a hardship or something to work on a night shift? I'm here to say that it is quite the opposite. Night shift rules in my business, extra money, less work, no other annoying trades to deal with. I'm not getting it.

86. I at first liked the ad...
..and then thought about my shifts, and the harder shifts people I know have worked.

28/6 (28 hours of work, 6 of sleep, repeat for 7 days) in IT disaster recovery is hard.
16/8 (16 hours of solid, dangerous, manual labor with 8 of sleep, repeat for months) on a fishing boat is hard.

Staying a few hours late at an office reeks of, well, out-of-touch entitlement bullshit.

I'd ask her campaign what the longest shift she ever worked was, if I thought I could get a straight answer.

87. Half her campaign is based on getting women to identify with her.
Its usually more subtle than this ad but she gets a lot of identity politics votes from women who put their careers on hold for their husbands, who got unfairly ganged up on by men they work with, cheated on by their husbands and so on. That's what her almost crying episode and her claims that the men in the race were gaining up on her were about. Its an emotional appeal that lacks substance.

96. This is a shame. Hillary does work long hours, but her campaign should not tell lies.
I am sure Hillary does work very hard and probably more than 12 hours most days.

Her campaign is claiming that "night shift" is a metaphor for "working late".

But to say "she's worked the night shift" is untrue and misleading.
