Barack Obama, appearing more like the Democratic nominee for president after each primary victory, is gaining momentum in Pennsylvania and is now within striking distance of frontrunner Hillary Rodham Clinton, a new poll shows.
But our state's primary, being held two months from now on April 22, could be meaningless if Obama continues his winning streak and the pressure grows on Clinton to drop out. Even if the race isn't over, it's statistically impossible for Pennsylvania to pick the nominee.
"Mathematically, it cannot be decided before the convention with pledged delegates," said G. Terry Madonna, the director of Franklin & Marshall College's Center for Politics and Public Affairs.
Obama has cut Clinton's lead among Democratic voters here nearly in half since January, the statewide F&M poll released today found. Clinton now leads Obama by 12 points, 44 percent to 32 percent. The margin of error is 5.6 percent.
Clinton led Obama by 20 points, 40 percent to 20 percent, a month ago.
