Clinton plagiarized Edwards tonight.... quotes included
CLINTON: Whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that's what this election should be about.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/21/debate.transcript/index.html

EDWARDS: ...I want to say this to everyone: with Elizabeth, with my family, with my friends, with all of you and all of your support, this son of a mill worker is going to be just fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine.

1. Not to mention Bill from 1992
-snip-
9:46 PM ... That was an interesting final moment to end on for Hillary. Candy Crowley is on CNN now saying how it was a good connect moment for HIllary, which I suspect it may have been. But we all do remember that those words were borrowed from Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, right?

I wish that guy would give specifics....
...but on the other hand, who cares?

It was a pair of strong performances, and very few will be swayed by it.

21. Update: Josh Marshall was referring to a specific line.
I was wrong about it just being a joke.

I mentioned at the end of my debate blog that the pivot of Hillary's powerful concluding remarks came from Bill Clinton's 92 campaign. Clinton had various permutations to it back then. But TPM Reader CG found one example in this November 1992 article by Anna Quindlen ...

Clinton, 92: "The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time."

Hillary Clinton, tonight: "You know, the hits I’ve taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country."

Just to be 100% clear, there's nothing in the least wrong with this. And it's a great line. But I think it shows the silliness of the 'plagiarism' charges based on a few borrowed lines. Politicians borrow good lines and catch-phrases. Happens all the time. There's nothing wrong with it.

22. The Carpetbaggers
When Kitty Kelley gets around to an expose on the Clintons she should title it "The Carpetbaggers."

4. Wow, I THOUGHT that sounded familiar...
Thanks for looking it up...she's getting all of the kudos and it's not even her line (although I think I saw somewhere else that it was a riff out of a Bill Clinton speech c. 1992.

9. The entire topic is ridiculous.
If Hillary continues to throw mud, return fire will be inevitable. She couldn't let it drop tonight.

8. Hey, I'm all for her acting like John Edwards.
He was the best candidate of this campaign cycle ;)

I'll take the son of the millworker in the form of the wife of the former President.

LOL.

17. She twisted a few words around. Try turning in someone else's paper
after using MS Office's thesaurus to switch around a few words and phrases. See how well that goes over...

BTW, I really wouldn't have brought this up if Clinton didn't make the Xerox comment.

19. I posted this to another thread
Hillary would have alleged that he had xeroxed one of John Edwards's speeches.

I have been trying to stay out of this since I can and will vote for either one. However, Hillary is really making the decision easy for me.

20. I honestly like and have supported both candidates,
so I don't think I'm biased when I say this, but a heck of a lot of you might want to consult your dictionaries on the word "plagiarism".

This is getting ridiculous. Conveying the same very generic and general ideal as someone else is not the same as copying someone else. What is the grand ideal that she is 'stealing'? That she has the support of her family and friends but hopes that the country will have the same support? STOP THE PRESSES!

No offense, but that isn't exactly the St. Crispin's Day speech she's lifting.
