More blacks than Hispanics may vote in Texas Democratic primary
Although Hispanics outnumber African-Americans in Texas by 3 to 1, more blacks than Hispanics may turn out to vote in the state's Democratic primary on March 4 because they're fired up about Barack Obama.

The emergence of Illinois Sen. Obama as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination has generated more excitement among African-American voters than leading black Texas Democrats have ever seen. And if, as they suspect, black voters turn out in greater numbers than do the Hispanics whom Hillary Clinton's counting on, her hopes for victory could be crushed.

"This year, it is a force of nature that doesn't appear to need a whole lot of help from people like me," said Ron Kirk, a former Dallas mayor who in 2002 became the first African-American in Texas to win a major-party nomination for the U.S. Senate. "The black vote is going to turn itself out."

Rep. Marc Veasey, an African-American Democrat from Fort Worth and Houston Rep. Garnet Coleman, the chairman of the African-American Legislative Caucus in Texas, expressed the same sentiment. All three support Obama.

3. Is it just me or did it seem like Clinton was being disrespectful towards the Hispanic moderator
I imagine that might dilute some of her votes as well.

5. Might she have been angry about the hidden meaning in
the questions? Sometimes the moderator phases the question with an agenda.

4. A lot of Texas Hispanics aren't citizens so they can't vote.

http://usliberals.about.com/od/extraordinaryspeeches/a/ObamaImmi_2.htm Here's Obama's speech about immigration and amnesty.

As usual he is appealing the the minority and ignoring the vast majority (middle class workers who lose jobs to immigrants). Can't win elections that way. His Faith Based Cronyism is evident.

I hate to tell him but the Ellis Island immigrants had to have their own money or sponsors. They had physicals so America could stop contagious diseases, TB, etc. They could not live on benefits or climb the fence to come in with drugs, etc. The illegals today don't want to learn English but join us with their country they left. They aren't the same immigrants with a passion to be lawful and learn the culture and language. They want us to learn theirs.

The country passed immigration laws limiting the numbers because it became a big problem with so many at once like now. The slums of NY City, etc, were shameful.

Obama you seem to have not learned the lessons of the past regarding immigrants? America has more legal immigrants coming than in the past yet that is not enough for the DC politicans. We must unite whole families (who may or may not fit in or work).

The Catholic and Evengelical Luthern churches bring in "workers" who are many (Asians,Mexicans,Polish, etc.). They don't care about over population or problems in our society because of it. They are not good citizens.

No all immigrants aren't educated nor do we owe them that since we can't educate those born here.

As a Democrat I don't agree with the New Democratic policy of amnesty or open borders with Mexico (trucks coming into our country going to Canada). When are they going to worry about our country and our jobs?

6. It's true that more blacks than Hispanics may vote in the Democratic primary in Texas.
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 08:24 AM by TexasObserver
Last time, I think the vote in the Democratic Primary in Texas was 24% Hispanic an 21% black.

Almost all blacks who vote in the Texas primary do so in the Democratic primary. For Hispanics, it's more like 2/3 in the Dem, with 1/3 in the Puke primary. Blacks historically have gotten out and voted better in the primary.

With Obama on the ticket, Texas blacks are excited about the presidential primary like they have't been in ages, maybe ever. I do expect a record turnout of black voters in the Texas primary, and they should account for at least 25% of the primary vote this year. They will vote for Obama by at least 85-15, probably 90-10.

I'm not going to do the numbers here, but if you take the percentage Hispanics in Texas who will vote in the Dem primary and multiply it by the split between Hillary and Obama, then the do same for the black voters who will vote in the Texas primary, you'll see that the black + Hispanic voters for Obama will outnumber significantly the black + Hispanic voters for Hillary.

9. Sounds like you're not very familiar with Texas politics, like I am.

Why don't you show up here on the night of March 4th, and we'll see which of us knows his Texas politics, and which of us doesn't?

I'll take you off IGNORE that day so I can see your apology.

10. Survey USA has the black turnout at 18% and the Latino turnout at 30%
Does this article given any concrete evidence about why they think the black turnout is going to be higher than the Hispanic turnout???

Or is it just wishful thinking?

11. 20% of blacks usually vote. There's significant room to improve and they're apt to increase
drastically this time.

12. That means they would have to turn out at nearly 3x the rate.
I find that unlikely.
