Analysis: Clinton chooses graciousness

By BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - Hillary Clinton,…

"No matter what happens in this contest — and I am honored, I am honored to be here with Barack Obama," she said at the conclusion of the 90-minute forum. "Whatever happens, we're going to be fine."

………

Clinton's generous praise of Obama stood out — an unprompted gesture that followed another poignant moment, when she acknowledged the pain of her husband's dalliance with White House intern Monica Lewinsky and his subsequent impeachment.

"I think everybody here knows I've lived through some crises and some challenging moments in my life," she said, winning applause and cheers.

24. NYTimes ACTUAL HEADLINE: Debate Takes On Contentious Air
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 10:30 AM by nomorewhopper

the OP's story came from Yahoo (AP) news

the real deal is in my link above. clinton's "gracious" bow at the end was overshadowed by many cringeworthy moments.

Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama veered from collegial to clenched and combative in a debate on Thursday, with Mrs. Clinton turning especially aggressive as she all but accused Mr. Obama of plagiarism and derided his political message as “change you can Xerox.”

She was wonderful
I simply can't understand the people who say she's "cold" or "shrill." Well, yeah, I can...it was originally a right wing smear, because she hit back at them. How dare anyone...ESPECIALLY a woman...do that? In reality, people who know her know a smart, warm, gracious, sometimes funny woman. Sure she's assertive, but that would be unremarkable for a male.

9. Clinton chooses Edwards' quote
John Edwards: "What's not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what's at stake is whether America is going to be fine." - Democratic Debate, 12/13/07

John Edwards: "I want to say this to everyone: with Elizabeth, with my family, with my friends, with all of you and all of your support, this son of a millworker's gonna be just fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine." - Edwards Speech, 1/30/08

Hillary Clinton: "No matter what happens in this contest — and I am honored, I am honored to be here with Barack Obama," she said at the conclusion of the 90-minute forum. "Whatever happens, we're going to be fine."

12. She really reached out to Obama at the close
That is usually when candidates try to stress why voting for themself instead of their adversary is so important. Instead she not only acknowledged Obama (it isn't that unusual for a candidate to say a nice word about their worthy opponent to not seem petty) but she went well beyond that. She repeated three times how honored she was to be there with him that night and physically reached out to him. She was gracious, it is hard to find a better example of being gracious than that.

10. She is a warm person. That's why the RW made her out to be "cold". They try to turn strengths into
weaknesses...and project their own shortcomings onto their Democratic adversaries.

Cold is someone who was actually tortured for years voting in favor of torturing others.

31. "Was that necessary?" Yes, it was. Gracious is not accusing Obama of plagiarism.
Gracious is not taking advantage of what was an ugly and despicable move by Tweety.

23. Its sinking in
I saw it as a dawning revelation that this probably isn't to happen for her. I really don't think until very recently that its settled in with her that she really may NOT become president. A few months ago during an interview, when asked "if" she becomes the nominee, she kept insisting she "will" be the nominee. I think it never entered her mind she wouldn't be. Now it has.

It was very gracious however.

Hillary's Reviews Are In: 'Standing Ovation,' 'Really Scored,' 'A Stronger Performance'
by Lindsay Levin
2/21/2008 10:31:02 PM

CNN's Campbell Brown notes a 'standing ovation' in response to Hillary's closing remarks.

CNN political analyst David Gergen - Hillary's last statement 'was the most effective moment she's had on television, I believe, since the New Hampshire primary… really scored on that.'

Politico's Ben Smith - 'Clinton's answer was a stronger performance.' "Clinton's answer was a stronger performance; Obama seems like he's about ready to get out of here."

CNN's Bill Schneider - Hillary 'just made an effective argument against John McCain.' "Clinton just made an effective argument against John McCain: Though the Arizona senator is a champion against wasteful spending, Clinton pointed to his support for the Bush tax cuts and the war in Iraq - both colossal expenditures unpopular with most Democrats."

NBC News' Chuck Todd - Hillary 'had a couple of very good moments on health care and the economy.' "Did she potentially win this debate on points; I think so; it was close but she had a couple of VERY good moments on health care and the economy that probably scored well in the various focus groups of undecided voters watching this debate."

New Republic's Michael Crowley - 'The subject of health care always brings out a formidable passion and policy fluency in Hillary.' "So much of the time politicians just seem to be going through the motions when debating the issues. But the subject of health care always brings out a formidable passion and policy fluency in Hillary. People can call her a phony for all kinds of reasons but it's clear she really gets and cares about this stuff."

ABC News' Rick Klein - Hillary 'sounds calm, in charge, deliberate.'

MyDD's Todd Beeton - 'Hillary Clinton just hit that closing response out of the park.' "Hillary Clinton just hit that closing response out of the park."

30. I agree
For those couple of minutes she was very gracious.

I only wish that she would have had that same level of class and nobility throughout the debate and over the course of her campaign. Things would be going better for her if she had.
