I seriously don't know.

6. Here:
"The Daily Texan is the student newspaper of The University of Texas at Austin. It is entirely student-run and independent from the university. It is one of the largest college newspapers in the United States with a daily circulation of roughly 30,000 during the fall and spring semesters, and bills itself as the oldest student newspaper in the South. The Texan has won more national, regional and state awards than any other college newspaper in America, and counts 10 Pulitzer Prize winners among its former staff."

The paper has been around since the university's inception. It is widely read, and a highly influential publication in Texas.

17. Interesting, I've lived in Texas since 1969 in DFW, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston and
I've never heard of this student publication being quoted anywhere in Texas as being a highly influential publication.

Pretty sad when you have to do a victory dance for a school newspaper. Hey, maybe you can get the local high school paper as well.

Oh well, each to his own. I bet the majority of UT goes for Obama.

GOBAMA!!

45. The key phrase in that post was
"highly influential." Almost everyone in Texas who has been to Austin or knew someone who went to UT knows what the Daily Texan is. It might be highly influential among the student population, but everyday Texans? Not so much.

They Love Hillary! I believe Texas is in her corner and she will Win Texas by landslide proportions!

Texans are familiar with female leadership. Governor Ann Richards was well loved by her constituency.

I had completely forgotten about how much they love Ann Richards and how those memories of her leadership might affect their vote. And with this impressive endorsement by a powerful "college newspaper" -- which, by rights, should have gone to Barack --, I think you may be on to something.

The polls are a dead heat and she has practically no ground game there. He has a massive and established one. She's way in debt and doesn't have enough $$$ to compete in advertising. It's just about over, and the odds of her winning TX now are not so hot at all.

Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 10:34 AM by texas_indy
Of course we are familiar with female leadership. Ann Richards was not the first female to be gov. of Texas.

I also like what a close friend of Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, said about how she would NEVER vote for Hillary.
Molly Ivins was also very highly loved by the democrats and indies, even moderate republicans,
down here and you can read her article saying this since she wrote it just before she died.

Texas is Obama country.

====================================== added with edit

BTW, Texas is pretty modern. How many knew that the Sheriff of Dallas county is a Latina lesbian? And she is pretty popular around here.

http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2008/feb/08/dallas-county-sheriff-lupe-valdez-supported-gay-le/

And for the republicans we have woman like Kay Bailey.

15. Time to clean house

She has pledged to restore government support to college students by increasing the availability of Stafford Loans and Pell Grants. Her outline for a universal health care system is thorough and sound, while Obama unfairly exploits the resounding term "universal" in terms of his plan, which is voluntary and wouldn't actually serve America in its entirety (like Social Security, policy can only be universal if it is mandatory). Furthermore, Clinton's plans for Iraq ensure a gradual transition to stability for the Middle East.

22. a recommendation in the heart of obama territory
a student newspaper endorsing clinton is significant for the fact that it's on a student campus - a huge one - that is full of people who will vote.

the problem is that these student newspapers don't have the type of loyalty that the big city papers do. the kids who write these editorials are known on campus, and their thoughts and comments are viewed as coming directly from them instead of from the paper.

i don't think it is going to carry a lot of weight, but its better than nothing for clinton, thats for sure!

40. When I was a UT grad student in the mid 1970s, the student newspaper ...
... endorsed a candidate for student government president whose platform included a pledge to change the inscription above the entrance to the main library from "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set ye free" to "Money talks."

I supported that endorsement. This endorsement for Hillary, not so much.

46. The Daily Texan? I wouldn't be too proud of that...
As a recent UT grad, I'm familiar with their work. The "newspaper" consists of a few pages of news wire stories followed by two pages of editorials about how the Left needs to accept responsibility for Iraq, college professors are indoctrinating students with anti-American propaganda, global warming is really a global conspiracy to destroy capitalism, and other "pearls" of wisdom from the sheltered children of rich Texas families. The only candidate that has any visible support on campus is Obama; I saw signs for Obama meet ups a full year ago.
