The Progressive: Obama Wins Texas Debate

Obama Wins Texas Debate

By Matthew Rothschild, February 22, 2008

Clinton didn’t lay a glove on him. And she lost a lot of points on the only punch she did throw, the canned line about “change you can Xerox.”

Obama had just finished with a terrific parry of the plagiarism charge, including that we’re now in the “silly season,” but Clinton stepped in anyway and looked not only silly but petty.

The crowd loudly booed her.

In a debate where she needed desperately to change the dynamics of the race, she brought nothing new, repeating the fatal “Ready on Day 1” line several times.

She’s been selling that slogan all campaign, and people aren’t buying. (This is Madison Avenue 101, and she and her strategists have flunked the course.)

She over-answered several questions, talking on and on until Campbell Brown, the moderator, had to interrupt.

1. Didn't watch the debates
Was she actually booed? Was Obama ever booed too, or just her?

12. oh, I beg to differ....
these sound like actual boos to me.
you can hear she got applause when she said "the words you use should be your own"

but she should've stopped there, she had to go a step further, tried to provide a cute sound byte...and it was too much..

listen for yourself

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x96195

and it was the only time I heard boos..I watched the entire debate.

3. I've been reading around and as the smoke clears it seems fairly
consistent that Obama bested her quite handily. This is consistent with what I saw.

That's why I was puzzled last night at CNN's commentary. It felt like that had watched a different debate.

4. No, she wasn't exactly booed.

There was a tiny murmur of a boo (mixed with other small crowd reaction), while Obama was mumbling a response to her allegations. It might have even been directed at him, it was so small and delayed from Clinton's comment.

5. actually, it was a large audible boo. and it was very clear
It occurred just after Obama slipped a comment of disdain into the middle of here longer statement. im sure that if she hadn't said it directly after he made a comment about bringing a halt to the bickering, it probably wouldn't have been so bad for her.

In my opinion though, i liked what Obama said more, but i think that Hillary had better delivery and seemed more confident. the crowd just didn't seem to agree with her though. Maybe they where Obama fans. Getting booed on national TV does do much for your image though.

15. it was not a boo it was a terrific line
i hope that she uses it again and again and again

She should use it 3 times in a speech

She should put it into her signs

Her surrogates should use it repeatedly

Hey the sooner we get this over the better if they are so far gone they can't even tell a boo well, . . . .

20. 3 times?
She should use it 20 times in a speech. It should be her new slogan! It's a great soundbyte, even. I see bumper stickers, signs, campaign pins....

9. Why kid yourself?
She was booed and the independents running meters went to zero when she said it. I thought she had been doing well until that point. Barack's defense was well received and she should have known to let it go. The only thing that redeemed the debate for her was a spectacular closing statement. Before I went to bed, I thought maybe that would be enough to call it a draw, but reflecting today, Obama was clearly and consistently "on" throughout; Hillary had ups and downs and while fluid, overall weaker in her responses.

"If you look...if you look" -- she had to yell over them to keep talking.

18. Yup.. she was BOO'D - Here is a YOU TUBE clip to remind you..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lowGc16Xy8

1:35 in is where she gets boo'd. Obama hadn't spoken for 30 seconds.. they were quite obviously booing Hillary, and Hillary only.

America is SICK of Dirty Politics.

How ironic that the one thing she gets credit for on the entire night was her last comment - and it turns out a day later that she took that from her husbands campaign and John Edwards campaign? The lady isn't even smart!
