How Does Hillary Have Such A Smooth Face Sometimes?
Last night at the debate she didn't have a wrinkle, but today she looks much older. Is it makeup or some kind of treatments to smooth her skin? Not any kind of slam I'm just curious.

1. She did look fabulous
I'd say she had an invigorating facial and professional makeup done. Her eyes looked really great.

19. It's why Oprah looks so great on her show too
and in person....not so much. But Oprah really has super duper lighting on her show because, she once explained, black skin has to be lit in a particular way.

21. I'm a fan of underlights
And back lighting.

Natural light too, as long as it's from a window.

But in a perfect world, all my photos would be in B/W. Everyone looks better in B/W.

Very challenging for shooting - even more so when the subject is just off the boat, or only a generation or so. First time I ever tried, all you could see were teeth.

56. I agree
I'm just saying that bright lighting washes out the planes and lines on the face. That's why, in theater, one must apply makeup with a vengeance. The contours of the face dissappear.

I noticed last night that she looks exceptionally good when the camera aims at her directly.

I'm not slamming her. She's a pretty woman, always has been. Great cheekbones.

However, bad lighting and camera angles can mess with anyone's look. For example, I look better from my right side than my left. And overheard lighting is the damned devil.

It was SO exciting!!

Seeing her was so fantastic.

I was less than 10 feet away from her. I stood there and said to my self "Self, Hillary Clinton is right there in from of you. She just looked at you and smiled".

When she left the stage, me and this guy next too me stuck our hands out. The SS was "Please don't do that". But Hillary touched my hand for a brief moment. As Roseanne Rosanna Danna would say .... "I thought I wuz gonna die!"

22. Excuuuuuuuuuuuse me?
I'm almost 60 and I don't have wrinkles. My neck is starting to show wear, but still no crow's feet. Not all 60 year old women have wrinkles. That being said I find it quite disturbing that Hillary's looks get picked apart. What people find distinguished in men, they find aging in women. I usually don't play the sexist card, but that's just what it is. I don't think that Obama is a fashion plate, but I support him anyway.

This Obama supporter will come to Hillary's defense any time a mean spirited barb about her appearance is cast. It's just a pet peeve I have.

And personally, I think finding out rather young that sun and I don't mix well has probably saved me from a fair amount of wrinkles.

But wrinkles really shouldn't be the issue when we're talking about electing a president.

Like you, though an Obama supporter, the whole idea of people picking apart Hillary's appearance just rankles.

We need neither emphasize her wrinkles nor pretend they aren't there. She's playing up her experience, she oughta wear 'em with pride. Or cover 'em with as much make-up as she likes.

93. LOL, yup
It's just that the attention paid to these matters is always disproportionate with women, be they in politics or show biz. I haven't heard anyone remarking on Paul Newman's crow's feet, you know? Or Bill Clinton's for that matter.

It's a weird societal thing that women are still, deep down, expected to be young and attractive, regardless of their profession or aspirations.

She has as many lines as the average 60 year old. It doesn't mean the average 60 year old woman is all wrinkly. Sorry if it came out wrong.

30. zero wrinkles on the forehead = botox (look at the pics)
i know this is a terrible pic of hillary but still you'll notice her expressive face and notice NO wrinkles on her forehead. usually when you make a face like that you will see the deep lines across your forehead. the second pic shows her in 2006 and her last week. she is sixty years old. sixty year old women have wrinkles and lines in their skin. hillary uses botox and likely had a face lift.

raise your eyebrows to make a "surprise" face. you get large lines on your forehead. if you don't have those lines, you use botox. hillary doesn' thave those lines.

its no surprise that politicians use botox. its a very quick procedure that just requires the injection of a small amount of liquid under the skin on the forehead. takes like 2 minutes.

I'm older than Hillary and I don't have wrinkles on my forehead or crows feet and I don't use botox and didn't have a face lift. Heredity helps.

78. im not talking about wrinkly skin, i'm talking about...
when you raise your eyebrows to make a "i'm surprised" face, and you'll notice that your forehead forms lines. when you have botox, you don't get these lines, resulting in a very smooth look. when hillary raises her eyebrows to make the "i'm surprised" or "i'm so happy" face, there's no lines. see the pic below for the kind of lines i'm talking about.

john kerry did this as well during the 2004 campaign. he has also had plastic surgery, for a "deviated septum" which is code for a face lift/jaw

83. I know what kind of lines your talking about.
I don't have a single one...so I should know. Some people don't. Also, some young people have a lot of lines across their forehead. The woman in the picture doesn't look so old to me and she doesn't have any crows feet. People age differently and you can't pigeon hole anyone. That's all I'm saying. My age shows more around the mouth or lower face than the upper face (eyes and forehead).

84. Before/After Pics of Hillary (no lines on head)
you are very lucky indeed to not have developed wrinkles. for most people, they are a simple fact of life. check the pics below.

one was "normal" as we see the botox starting to wear off in the forehead. one with a recently applied round of botox. the skin is so tight despite her very pronounced facial expression, leading us to believe that the muscles in the forehead are under the affects of botox.

they all do it. even the men. it's not a big deal and i know that some will say, shame on you for posting this unflattering picture of hillary but its definitely closer to the real deal than the photoshopped, airbrushed, botoxed, nonsense we get from most of the politicians.

Than she has been looking every time I see her on the tube.

BTW, is it ageism or just looks that we are talking about here --- neither should factor in and ultimately - we ALL are getting or will get wrinkles - so no big deal! I do not think McCain is a war mongering bastard because he is 71 - I would think it no matter what age he was.

But I admit, I was surprised by that top picture of Hillary. Is it the lighting or what....?

Her life, and Bill's are an open book. Botox or surgery would by now be open knowledge.

Plus, it is my understanding that Botox needs to be done every several weeks, or so. With her busy schedule for the past year, do you really think she could have hidden these?

9. She may be using make up that reflects light in a way that minimizes wrinkles.
Wrinkles are visible because of the shadows that the depressions of the skin cause. Some make-ups cover that up. They contain powders or something that reflects the light so that you don't see the shadows. I don't know -- it's just a suggestion.

I'm around your age, and my skin is aging fairly well so far. But a bad night's sleep sure has bigger repercussions now than when I was in my 20s!

And make-up can do amazing things, especially stage make-up or for television, if artfully applied.

97. That's true
I remember reading an interview with Catherine Deneuve (sp?) and she said she made a decision to allow herself to gain 15-20 lbs as she aged, to keep her face looking better. Even with great bones, the really skinny look is rarely kind to your face -- heck, look at some of the Kennedy women now -- amazing bone structure there, but their very thin build isn't so flattering anymore.

Or maybe I just like to think that a few additional lbs is ok, lol!

She looks older in Long Day's Journey Into Night than in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner five years later because after five years retirement she'd put on a couple of pounds.

102. Yes, true
I was thinking more of Maria, actually. I was sort of shocked recently to see some live candid shots of her - maybe an the Obama event? - and she didn't look good at all. I wanted to feed her a bit.

Or heck, Mick Jagger. Someone needs to hand that man a cheeseburger and a milkshake!

52. made the mistake of dating a model from a model's family once.
extraordinarily pretty on the outside, the vacuum of space was jealous about how perfection was reached on the inside.
Her mom, a prof. runway model, covergirl, and mag model for decades, came out looking like her face had suffered the ravages of lunar landings, A-bomb tests, and decades of dessication in the deepest part of the Sahara during the dry season. She quickly ran back to her lab, while my date entertained. as it were.

When mom returned to the public eye (meaning me) not a wrinkly could be found, the make up was so perfect you had this sudden urge to smear the tiniest bit of it, and frankly, I almost did not recognize her.

After dinner, and the better part of the second bottle of a fine merlot later, she confessed mom's liberal use of PrepH.

81. Apparently only the Canadian formulation now, though.
According to _this article_, the FDA demanded a reformulation of the U.S. version which removed the wrinkle-suppressing ingredients.

I don't know how true all this is, but it's an interesting read anyway.

14. good lighting - read the linked article
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 06:07 PM by Beaverhausen
http://www.latimes.com/features/lifestyle/la-ig-makeup20jan20,1,4749910.story

article linked above profiles the make-up artist who has done each candidate- kinda interesting. Below is a snippet where she talks about one of Clinton's earlier debate appearances:

But it was Clinton's dewy, youthful, wrinkle-free face that really caught people's attention. "I must have gotten a thousand e-mails about that afterward," Soterion says. "Everyone wanted to know how I did it, what products I used. Things were crazy." (For the record, Soterion says she has never seen evidence that Clinton has had Botox, and her flawless face had more to do with the light-reflective powder that's her stock in trade, along with the bright lights of the venue.)

Soterion says lighting is so crucial that she makes a point of attending technical rehearsals. "If it's a small theater where they can't bring the lights back and down, it'll cause shadows. And the best makeup application in the world can't fight shadows; dark areas sink in, the lines look deeper and everything looks more pronounced."

Many older celebrities won't appear on a program or interview without one.

Look at the tape from 60 minutes a couple weeks ago - one with Obama and then Couric's interview with Hillary - the difference in lens and lighting was painfully obvious.

For the camera, bright frontal lighting makes the years go away. Sidelighting shows every day of your life if your skin texture isn't absolutely perfect.

60. Make-up and lighting will make a big difference
I've noticed she seems to wear a great deal of make-up - the trick with it is if not done just right, it ends up looking like paint and making a person look much older.

Sort of a shame that a woman politician needs to be so concerned about looking older.

101. Hillary is a very good looking woman.
That much talked about photo on post #84 is not what Hillary looks like in person. As someone who actively volunteered in her campaign, I have seen her up close in more than one opportunity. I saw her last at the Hallmark town hall meeting on Feb. 4th, and was sitting on the second row. Afterward, she placed her arm over my shoulder as we briefly spoke and Huma took our picture. That's about as close as a person can come to another.

Up close Hillary has some wrinkles that are normal to a woman of her age who has not had plastic surgery, but her skin is otherwise smooth and healthy. She has big, piercing blue eyes with long eyelashes that hardly ever show to their full advantage in photos. She also have a wicked sense of humor and a megawatt smile.

116. HD makeup is different from regular TV makeup.
My daughter is a trained HD makeup artist, who spent 4 years in Hollywood
and now does news anchor makeup for NBC.

The HD process includes completely filling in the pores and creating a flawlessly
smooth base before applying color and shading.

That's why you've noticed a difference.

You have a really good eye!
