Bush Heads to Florida to Rally Voters

WASHINGTON - President Bush is trying to whip up support in Florida, the state that gave him the White House in 2000, while Republicans send out hundreds of volunteers in a massive voter registration drive.
Bush makes his 20th visit to Florida on Saturday as president to attend in Orlando what the campaign calls the first grass-roots mobilization rally in his quest for re-election. He was last in Florida a month ago, throttling up his re-election bid by opening the Daytona 500 auto race, NASCAR's most prestigious event.

"President Bush's economic policies have failed Florida," said Rep. Kendrick Meek, Kerry's state campaign chairman. Bush's "corporate buddies have shipped 70,000 Floridian manufacturing jobs overseas and now it's time for Mr. Bush to get the pink slip."
Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., said that in the Orlando area, the jobless rate in January was 4.4 percent, compared with 2.5 percent with Bush's election, a loss of 40,000 jobs.
"I wish the president would spend some more time in central Florida and speak to people other than his most loyal supporters, because he needs to hear that his misguided policies are hurting people," said Graham, who briefly contested Massachusetts Sen. Kerry in the Democratic race.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., criticized Bush on his treatment of veterans, saying the administration has threatened to veto a measure to end the practice of denying wounded military retirees disability compensation along with their retirement pay. The administration says such a measure would be too costly.

"I'm sorry to say that the comments of Sen. Graham and Sen. Nelson seemed to have more to do with their desire to audition for the vice presidential nomination than they have to do with substantive issues," Reed said.
