Who REALLY watched Bill Maher last night?
Did you notice that he played a clip of Michelle Obama making her controversial statement and in THIS clip she said "REALLY proud"? Yet in other clips that came out this week, they cut out the word "REALLY".

There have been a few debates here about what she actually said. And that one word "REALLY" changes the context quite a bit.

"For the first time in my adult life I am really proud of my country."

Here is the video clip Bill Maher used: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/02/michelle-obama.html

And here it is in print: http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/02/pride_in_the_na.html
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video_log/2008/02/michelle_obama_first_time_shes.html

Now compare that to: "For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country."

That version is cited here: http://the26thparallel.blogspot.com/2008/02/michelle-obama-proud-to-be-american.html

For all the DUers who are ashamed of what she said, you are entitled to your opinion. However, it would be smart if you used the correct quote.

19. Because being "really proud" implies you have been proud in the past
But taking that word out makes it sound like she has NEVER been proud to be an American.

For example, I have always been proud of my son who is a musician. But after hearing him play the other night, I am REALLY proud of him now.

40. Different Strokes
One can also read it as "this is the first time I'm really proud of my country. I've just been pretending to be proud before." Wonder when she will be really, really, really proud of this country? Guess we will have to see on that one. I assume if her husband doesn't win, she will lose her newfound pride. Write some more stuff like her thesis where she complains about being the poor underpriveleged black girl in a prestigious white school, wherae no-one from professors to students "really" like her. Well she may feed you that, but she can't feed me that. I bet some white person there liked her. REALLY.

55. Sad to hear a Democrat endorse Blue Bell Ice Cream
Don't you remember their commercial about "democrats don't like anything?" I do, and I haven't bought Blue Bell since that commercial. I thought on republicans like Blue Bell because of that commercial. I hope they sink to the bottom of the ice cream market. And if they wait for me to buy any Blue Bell, they'll wait until hell freezes over.

The commercial was run a lot of times. The gist was this. Everbody likes Blue Bell except democrats. democrats don't like anything. This was when Bush was running against Gore. I'll never forget it, and I'll never buy their Ice Cream. It really ain't all that good. I did sort of like Vanilla bean, but there is a lot better Ice Cream on the market.

I made a true statement. It was on TV during the Bush and Gore campaign. Anbody who buys Blue Bell is a communist in my opinion. I see their stuff melting on the shelves in the democratic county where I live. You guys sure have a republican sound. Of course Texas voted for Bush the Connetticutt yankee. Prep school boy. Didn't you? Well I didn't and will never vote for a Bush.
I also tell everyone I know don't buy Bue Bell. and I tell them why. I threw a fit because my son bought some and I made him take it back to the store. That is how strongly I feel about Blue Bell and their nasty comments about democrats. May they rest below in the heated - most hot - of places.

No I didn't vote for Bush. Not everyone in Texas voted for him.

Get used to it, when you say something on here people are going to ask you for a link. Since it was only a few years ago, I'm sure there would be something somewhere about it.

It was shown on television several times. I don't know if it was national TV, or just local. My state does carry Blue Bell, so maybe it was local. I dont' know and don't care. I just wont buy their ice cream, and neither will any democrat who saw that commercial. I see it setting on the shelf a lot in my local store even when the Blue Bunny shelves are bare. So there. I'm not the only democrat who saw it, and Texas, you sound like a republican invader to me. I know plenty are on this board pushing for Obama, because of their hate for Hillary.

31. Agreed. It REALLY does change the meaning. It means "especially" in context.
The fact that many media outlets clipped it out means they, too, KNOW that she didn't mean what they were claiming she meant.

That is not journalism, but advocacy based upon misquoting and deception.

I'm kinda like well didn't you get some fancy degrees and things that others haven't been privvy to, and if you don't like the country,, you can leave now that it's done everything for you. Maybe you can be successful elsewhere. That would be the right thing to do. Just leave and live somewhere else if you don't like the country. That's what I'd do.

A proven longstanding record of poor judgment.

How patriotic is it for someone to vote to send men and women to war for a perceived "political advantage".

The republicans have NO leg to stand on when questioning Michelle or Barack Obama's patriotism and neither do you as a result of your support for Hillary Clinton.

There are obviously two quotes, of which he or she was unaware, and that has been a source of confusion. I think other posters have cleared it up. No need to call anyone a liar. I don't bother much anymore, and I have to admit that I have little sympathy left for Hillary and her supporters who are guilty of every single thing they accuse Obama supporters of. It was Hillary supporters using David Brooks and Krauthammer to bolster Clinton and/or attack Obama with way back last summer, and the rec's piled up. The Hillaryis44 crowd used any and all sources to attack anyone who didn't like Hillary and Hillary fans didn't seem bothered then.

51. Why do you generalize about Hillary supporters?
They are just as diverse and non monolithic here as Obama fans. There are many Hillary supporters who don't use juvenile names or drag rightwing crap here. There are many Obama supporters who are adults as well. But in the past few weeks, I've seen Peggy Noonan, Fox News, Drudge, townhall.com all uses as "sources" in bashing Hillary. Very few Obama supporters stepped in and said this was wrong.

To top it off, we now have this slew of posts demanding Hillary drop out, mocking both her and her supporters and once again using rightwing memes to trash her. (Personally, I think her campaign is over - but that's her call, not some gang of angry Obama supporters on DU.)

Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 05:16 PM by Forkboy
Yourself included. If I generalized my apologies. But I saw very few Hillary supporters saying anything about right wing sources when they used them, and when Hillary was riding high. I find the sudden concern to be hypocritical after the shit they've served up.

I commented on a couple of the threads asking her to drop out, an argument I hate when it's used against anyone. Being a Kucinich fan and hearing that almost daily will do that to a fella. To be fair, I saw a few asking Obama to do the same after the first few debates when Hillary was doing good. I don't like it from any side.

My point is though, that neither group can claim any high ground at all because too many of their supporters have chosen to wallow in the filth. You can't do that and then turn around and say it's wrong, and that's what I'm seeing from many (not all) Hillary supporters.

When I see a single Hillary supporter call out Tellurian or wyldwolf and their ilk just ONCE I'll believe they really care about the trashing of a Democrat. Until then I find it to be self serving and hypocritical. And that goes for Obama fans who have gone along with shit for the same reason and then turn around and complain.

That asshole Kingston got away with the bullshit about the "hand over the heart" pledge of allegiance and refusal to ever wear a flag pin crap without any rebuttal whatsoever. And that bigger vile scumbag Frum got away with the patriotism crap the whole show. Neither Barack Obama - nor Hillary, for that matter - had anyone to defend them, a rarity for that show. Amy Walter just sat there and drank her damn coffee. Annoyed the hell outta me.

Democrats beating up on each other pisses me off enough. But when I see vile liars like these two allowed to attack Democrats with no one to speak for the other side, I lose it. I expect that from Fox, but not that show. Bill Maher did not inject any truth into the discussion at any point. When Matt Taibbi came on, there was a little back and forth, but before that, it was a rightwing talking point bashfest.

It is obviously that the second one in my OP is an edited version, cutting out the word "really".

If you have a clip where she used this phrase a second time in a different speech, without the word "really" I would love to see it. And if I am wrong, I will admit it.

But that still doesn't explain why the video clip was edited.

I say welcome too. Really, there are many Karl's and I hate it when it's spelled with a K. Just a personal preference. I prefer Carl with a C.

See post 18. Definitely a good watch to see what we'll be up against. The GOP slime machine is so transparent and ludicrous this year that I doubt people will buy it.

35. exactly- i caught it right away. they also twisted her words around while discussing it...
all of a sudden it turned into her saying that america isn't a great country- which isn't at all what she said.
plus- they continued the LIE that the pic of obama with his hand not over his heart was during the pledge of allegiance, when in fact it was during the national anthem.

43. fEven worse
One should always hold one's hand over the heart during the playing of the national anthem. Did you see the pictures with Hillary and the other's with their hand over their hearts while the NA was being played, and Obama had his hands down to his sides? That really ticked off the vets. I know. I have many in my family.

67. wrong. there is no requirement to have your hand over your heart during the anthem...
and as obama has explained it- he was taught by his grandfather that when you say the pledge, you have your hand over your heart, but during the national anthem, you sing.

i was never taught to put hand over heart during the anthem, either.
