Obama may face grilling on patriotism
WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism.
Now Obama's wife, Michelle, has drawn their ire, too, for saying recently that she's really proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.

Conservative consultants say that combined, the cases could be an issue for Obama in the general election if he wins the nomination, especially as he runs against Vietnam war hero Sen. John McCain.

Cause wearing an American flag lapel pin has done so much for America in the last 7 years.

1. Patriotism is what patriotism does, not what it wears.

And the photo of him was taken during the singing of the national anthem, not the recitation of the pledge. You COULD report that as a FACT, Yahoo!

10. I know that I'm old
but when I was growing up, you placed your right hand over your heart to say the pledge of allegiance. When the national anthem was played, you stood up and were silent, with either your hands clasped in front of you or hanging by your side. My mother would "correct" me if I got confused and started to put my hand over my heart for the anthem.

When did this change to "you must always put your hand over your heart" for anything?

The Reagan years? 9/11? When?

As for the lapel pin... I never knew that this was obligatory either.

I remember Madeleine Albright had a huge collection of American flag brooches, and that some made fun of her for always wearing one to almost every occasion. Again, when did this become mandatory? Is it a rule just for politicians? Because I attend monthly club meetings of the local Kiwanis club and I don't see people there wearing an American Flag lapel bin. They meet at the local Masonic lodge, and sometimes I see the Masons around, and they usually have a Mason's lapel pin or nothing at all. Are these people unpatriotic now?

6. As a Hillary supporter, I think this is going too far. However, I would like
it if they would start questioning him more on his views on Pakistan, and on why he doesn't feel democracy IS, in fact, superior to dictatorships.

7. Obama has plenty to say on faux patriotism - and will - and I can't wait.

8. yep, bring it on.
I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that John McCain does truly and deeply love and care about this country. But if the right is generally that stupid, and really wants to have a conversation about patriotism and think a flag pin is their ticket, well, alrighty then.

11. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundral
American flag lapel pins are made in Mexico or China.

I would welcome this "argument" anytime the Repugs or anyone else brings it up...

12. Of course he will be challenged
on his patriotism. Aren't ALL Democrats? Only Rethugs are true patriots, don't you know?

That attack is to be expected, since the Rethugs have no successes to run on.
