If you support Obama - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you criticize Hillary Clinton - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you disagree with Hillary supporters - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you think Hillary ever lost a debate - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you think Hillary uses tears for headlines - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you ever made fun of Hillary's pantsuits - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

If you put an negative adjective in the same sentence with the word Hillary - YOU ARE A SEXIST!

.... Oh this can go on and on... feel free to chime in and add yours..;)

I have been called a sexist a billion times today - I might as well have fun rather then be angry....

I'll chime in: This isn't helpful.
Yes, there are some people who yell sexism at every turn, but there are plenty of Hillary and Obama supporters alike who see genuine sexism here and we don't like it. I know you're joking, but I don't think this kind of strawman argument and mocking does anything but stir the shit.

24. Then you should confront those instances in the relevant post
instead of calling out a big group of diverse people. If truly ALL you get is "you're sexist," you MIGHT want to carefully consider your words. I haven't read your posts, so I can't judge whether or not there is any truth to it. Anyway, this kind of call out is, as I said, unhelpful.

7. Definition of sexism
1. Discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women.
2. Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.

snip

Sexism has been described as the practice of domination of women. It is a practice that is supported in many different ways that are critical to our socialization into our sex roles, and therefore makes this domination acceptable in society—through language, visual association, media representation, and stereotyping, especially on the basis of the mothering/caring role of women. Sexism is important also because all women experience it in different ways, depending upon their social and economic situation—within the family and in jobs—and it limits the ways in which women seek to actualize their potential.

10. If you consistently refer to a female candidate as "unhinged,"
"irrational," "shrill," "shrieking," "having a melt-down", "desperate," "breaking down," etc. every time she gets even mildly heated in a debate or discussion, yes.

You are a sexist.

39. The words you choose
indicate your attitudes, and describing a woman who's simply angry, but still articulate and controlled as "unhinged," etc. does not cast a flattering light on your attitudes towards women.

115. FALSE.
The intent and shade of meaning you have chosen in context with the dialogue is what indicate your "attitude". YOUR interprepation of MY meaning is no one's fault but your own.

127. Sorry, but that's just how language works. Typing the word "FALSE" in
capital letters does not change it. If someone consistently refers to black people as "lazy," "stupid," or "welfare cheats," if they consistently refer to Jewish people as "money-grubbers" and conniving, if they consistently refer to women as "unhinged" and "irrational," those words tell us a lot about the speaker or writers attitude.

I suggest you read up, not only about sexism, but about propaganda, advertising, and, for that matter, writing in general.

25. You really don't know how sexism works, do you?
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 10:07 PM by Pamela Troy
It's standard operating procedure in the sexist's lexicon -- react as though any sign of anger in a woman is a sign of "hysteria" or incipient insanity. "Uppity women" have, for centuries been denounced as neurotic or insane.

And no, it has NOT been applied to Bush as consistently or as frequently as it has to Hilary Clinton.

66. Actually, it works like this:
Hillary Clinton is described everywhere as "breaking down," "sobbing," "bursting into tears," "clearly out of control," etc. before the cameras.

I finally see the video tape. She chokes up slightly while speaking and looks a little emotional. That's it.

HIllary Clinton is described as "losing her temper" during a debate, "screaming," becoming incoherent and, of course, "shrill."

I finally see the debate. She gets a little heated -- along with Edwards and Obama who, of course, are NOT described as "screaming," becoming incoherent and "shrill," etc. That's it.

Excited posts appear here on DU. OMG! WTF! Hillary is UNHINGED! She's UNRAVELLING!!! She's SHRILL! She's SHRIEKING, the posters shriek, hopping up and down excitedly and waving their hands. OMG! OMG!

I finally see the videotape. Hillary is pissed. She is, however, quite controlled, quite articulate and nowhere near "shrieking." That's it.

I suggest you do a little reading up on sexism and its history, especially when it comes to accusing women of irrationality.

98. What you read into that was positively novel-esque!
Take off the victim glasses and you will see that she was ACCURATELY called unhinged in that sad spectacle over Obama's fliers because that is exactly what it was. Do you think I want someone of that flash temper to get anywhere near control of the US military?

You must be kidding.

105. No need to write a novel. It all happened exactly that way.
She was accused of "breaking down" because she got slightly choked up.
She was accused of "shrieking" and losing her temper because she got as heated as Edwards and Obama were during a debate.

And now she's accused of being "unhinged" "(OMG! OMG! OMG!) because she was visibly angry.

And now you've pulled out the "don't let some irrational woman get control of the military chestnut."

Next you'll be saying she's "on the rag" or in a menopausal frenzy.

156. I'm also very tired of the victim card....
If a woman points out an injustice or inequality, than we are playing the victim. I'm not a victim I'm a survivor! Using that type of language when we speak out against an injustice is just another way of keeping us in our "place".
I voted for Edwards but I'm sick to death of the unabashed sexism I have seen being used towards Senator Clinton.

You got a beef with Hillary, fine... probably no more than I do.

I don't like her policies, her voting record or her campaign tactics. And that is what I write about here. Not her looks, her clothing, the sound of her voice or any other superficial things, especially if they are things relating to her sex. The world has had many female leaders, both present and past, I see no reason why the United States can't elect one.

Hillary is no saint. But she is a Democrat and a Senator and a fine presidential candidate (who happens to have a horrible campaign) and deserves our respect.

If we all work together, we can elevate the debate at least to a point where we aren't screaming
"racist!" "homophobe!" "sexist!" and (my personal favorite since it's the one most often thrown at me) "cultist!".

Not to say we will all agree on everything, we likely won't. But we don't have to stoop to this level to make our points or to disagree.

104. I do and I don't.
They know what they're in for, and the Admins seem to let different rules apply to different forums (stuff in here would be squelched quickly in any other forum), so the applying mods have to know what they're in for. I don't mean to sound cold, though I'm sure I do, but this forum is exactly what the Admins must want...nothing more or less. If you feel sorry for the mods then you should talk to the people who run the site and allow what they do here. The mods enforce rules that are already made, not ones they make up themselves. And those rules come from on high (and I'm not for a second saying I would do a better job, just sharing how I see things).

randomly accusing someone of it, with no real reason for the accusations. Sexism has become a generic term used to describe things which aren't even close to being sexist in nature. I am at this hour preparing a post in which Petula Clark and the representation of males and females in the modern world are prevalent themes.

It may interest no one. It may interest but a few stray souls. It may attract millions. I don't see it as a quantitative undertaking but as a pouring forth, if you will, of deeply personal and revelatory concerns.

All of you will be invited, to be sure. Casual dress. Please bring a can of ravioli for Republican orphans.

I must say, I find your assumptions fascinating. No, you seem to be saying, we women don't come out and SAY we're voting for her because of her sexual equipment -- we're waaaaaaay too sneaky for that! But you, with your incredible powers of discernment, can look into our hearts and ferret out the dreadful truth! No matter WHAT we say, of course, you know the dreadful facts about our motives.

Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 11:16 PM by casus belli
is people being called sexist for pointing out observations about Hillary which really don't qualify as sexism even if you're stretching the definition. Accusing someone of being sexist, without knowing that it was their intention, is itself sexist. To suggest that someone perceives someone differently because they don't share their gender, shows that the person is predisposed to a line of reasoning which says - because this person is a man they might have meant this in a sexist way. That is a form of sexism.

My suggestion would be for everyone to grow a thicker skin, and maybe save the accusations of sexism for those who are obvious. I mean, you have to admit, when taken to the extreme you could really find examples of potential sexism in just about everything if you really look for it. The same is true of racism, homophobia or any other type of irrational fears or intolerance.

138. No, I don't see that very often. Oh, I don't doubt that it happens,
but most of the accusations of sexism I've seen have been in response to the sexist hyperbole typically used to describe women. If she chokes up slightly, she's "breaking down," if she gets heated in discussion she's "shrill," if she gets angry she's "shrieking" and "unravelling."

No, we can't directly read the minds and therefore the intentions of people who speak or write to us. If we could, we wouldn't need language. We can -- and we must, because that's what language is for -- infer from the words a person chooses what their intentions and attitudes are. Do you ever use the word "racist?" "Sexist?" Can you read minds?

Of course, men and women perceive things differently, just as whites and blacks do, southerners and northerners, Californians and New Yorkers, Europeans and Americans perceive things differently. If the perspective is different, the perception is likely to be. No, this doesn't mean that one automatically assumes that "because this person is a man they might have meant this in a sexist way." The comments made are judged on their own merits. And by the way -- plenty of women make sexist comment about other women. It's one of the hard lessons most of us learn as we get older.

130. That would be a good example of bigotry.
But voting for a man because he is a man is not bigotry. No more so than someone who is black voting for a black person because s/he is black. The only way the other person's example would be bigotry is if someone voted for Clinton because she is a woman, and s/he (voter) believes that women are superior in some form or fashion, in this case politics. Voting for Clinton because she is a woman may be biased, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is bigoted.

135. It is not the same thing though.
The person is voting for Clinton because she is a woman, not because she is not a man. If it were for the latter reason, then that would be bigotry (misandry); if the former, then it may simply be bias, though bigotry could be a motivating factor.

142. Splitting hairs and semantics. You know what was meant and the point is correct.
Supporting someone SOLELY upon their skin color, sexual preference, gender, or other physical characteristic is wrong and only perpetuates the division among people.

143. Using the word "bigotry" correctly is not splitting hairs and semantics.

"Supporting someone SOLELY upon their skin color, sexual ORIENTATION, gender, or other physical characteristic.." may be silly, in my opinion, but it is not bigotry. It is bigotry if the person votes that way because s/he is voting AGAINST someone else because of (in spite of) "skin color, sexual ORIENTATION, gender, or other physical characteristic."

147. How do you vote against someone? You cast a vote FOR someone.
Last I checked the Presidential election was not based upon positive and negative votes racked up by each candidate.

If a woman and a man are running against each other in an election and a person votes for the woman JUST BECAUSE she is a woman, then in effect that person is rendering a judgment against the other person because that other person is NOT of the preferred gender. This would be bigotry, for while an explicit vote was never rendered against that person, the effect is the same.

152. Easy-peasy.
I vote for the democratic candidate because I am voting against the republican one, usually. Sometimes, I actually vote for the democratic candidate because I like the person's issues and stances. In one case I am voting for something, in the other case I am voting for something by voting for the opposite. The end result is still the same, but the motivations are very different. There were a number of persons here who were wanting to vote for Lamont (despite not knowing all his stances) because it was an opportunity to vote against Lieberman.

As for your example, it still depends. Even if I vote for a woman because she is a woman, it doesn't mean I am doing so because her opponent is a man (that is bigotry). While the end results may be the same, it doesn't mean the way the result was achieved was the same. Personally, I feel it is silly to vote for someone based on something like gender, etc., but you will find that most people who are doing so are doing so out of a sense of pride (if they are a member of the said group). You seem to be confusing bias and bigotry. Voting for someone because she is a woman as a the sole reason is biased, but bias doesn't necessarily mean bigotry.

122. Interesting, one of your antagonists in this thread was caught red-handed lying, was presented with
irrefutable proof of her lying, and was kindly asked FIVE times to retract her lies. She refused, and now has the arrogant audacity to lecture others on their moral shortcomings.

As I said, interesting.

That's not sexist? Or should I post what you said before you edited.

You ARE a sexist. Your posts in your brief time at DU demonstrate this. Your attempt to make a joke of it after your posts have been deleted for being SEXIST doesn't make you not a sexist.

163. I am NOT sexist because I think Hillary would make a lousy president . . .
just as I am NOT racist because I think Obama would make a lousy president . . .

I AM, however, sane because I KNOW that McCain would be a disaster as president . . .

and even more sane because I strongly suspect that he'll be the one inaugurated in January . . .

for one simple reason . . .

it's not who votes that counts; it's who counts the votes! . . .

If you think it's a joke, have no clue that sexism really exists, or dismiss it when you see it against someone you don't admire...or is that too obvious?
