2. Yes, Lulu. Hi, babylonsister.
That was also a good one.

"...from crayons to perfume..."

Excellent song.

6. My god I heard one of her tunes in the grocery store's piped-in music
just this past week.

I'm serious. It was the "...and this world will be a better place for you/ and for me / ...." -- that one.

8. That's the one. I was stuck on the title.
Anyway, Ms. DeShannon belted that tune out and it sounded pretty damn good.

So you think Clark can take us back "Downtown"?

Just as long as we "Don't sleep in the subway, darling".

12. They are. I heard a symphonic wind ensemble once do a collage thing of
their PROMISES, PROMISES, and it knocked me out.

Beautiful stuff.

4. oooh....I used to love her when I was growing up in France......
she was one of the few English singing artists that the French would listen to. American music was always popular, but not so much with the English.

11. Which "Pet" Clark song? I'm wracking my brain --
All I can come up with is "A Foggy Day in London Town" - not one of her hits, I don't think... Hmmmm.

I'll have to work on the foggy London reference...

Not sure, gateley.

By the way it's great to see you.

30. Yes, yes, yes, that's the one.
"You wander around on your own little cloud
When you don't see the why and the wherefore
You walk out on me when we both disagree
Cuz to reason is not what you care for

I've heard it all a million times before
Take off your coat my love and close the door

CHORUS
Don't sleep in the subway darlin'
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway darlin'
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing's wrong
Now you're beside me again

You try to be smart then you take it to heart
And it hurts when your ego's deflated
You don't realize that it's all compromise
And your problems are so over-rated

'Goodbye' means nothing when it's all for show
So why pretend you've somewhere else to go?

CHORUS
Don't sleep in the subway darlin'
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway darlin'
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing's wrong
Now you're beside me again

--Composed by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent

However, I think it's time for newer soft songs with complicated titles. I suggest Dionne Warwick.

I run for the bus, dear,
While riding I think of us, dear,
I say a little prayer for you.
At work I just take time
And all through my coffee break-time,
I say a little prayer for you.

21. Upthread Burt and Hal were praised, and properly so, and here, blogslut,
you invoke them anew.

Bless you, and if you have nasty neighbors, may they die an anguished death soon.

I love Warwick's recording of that song.

31. What a sound those two could get. I'll do a tip of the hat to their
producer, certainly, but those compositions and that sound... unbelievably holy.

I'm using a small 'h' there and not a capital 'H' but the emotional wallop is likely the same.

Two lads from Brooklyn getting it done in the recordin' studio.

Agree -- "Bridge" is sublime. Also, "Poem on the Underground Wall" ranks pretty darn high with this listener.

And then Paul Simon went on to do some really spectacular stuff with African rhythms.

28. Anyone remember Mary Hopkins?
Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

I think that was her only hit.

BTW, Petula has a killer voice!
