Jimmy Carter
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 09:28 PM by anamnua
I can remember Jimmy Carter's ascent to the democratic nomination. His trademark was a spiel ingeniously woven of ephemeral insubstantive platitudes. He mastered the art of delivering a mass 'feel good' serotonin surge.
People reflexly flocked to him in the aftermath of a highly unpopular Republican president (leaving aside the brief interregnum of the relatively benign but uninspiring Gerald R. Ford).
The result? A one term flop followed by 12 years of Reagan and Bush senior.
Need I say more?

23. Nice guy
, an honourable man, and with a distinguished record as an ex-president. But even his most ardent supporters must admit that he was a disappointment when entrusted with the top job. My 'point' is that feel good speechifying and mass serotonising are simply not enough. The parallels with the 'here and now' are ominous.

Your not making a point comparing Carter to Obama.
It also is not Carter's fault that the Reagan and Bush years took place.

10. Yes, please tell me, with some certainty, how this applies today. I see a new communication tool
and a very interested population. Carter could only speak to the public through the filter of the media. And now, the President can blog directly if he so chooses. Wouldn't that be cool. Barack Obama blogs on Kos and DU, just to keep us informed.

12. I don't think Clinton's record is anything to call home about either
After two terms of economic growth and peacetime prosperity, he ruined the chances of future Democratic nominees to capitalize on his relatively popular and successful term by being unfaithful.

Is that what we want? Is that what Hillary will provide?

What's the point of this post?

Think about it! A perfect balance. Geographically. Age wise. foreign policy wise. Experience. And they are both idealists.

Seems that Jimmy did better with Middle East Peace than his successors did....

16. 34 posts and you're trying to bring down one of the great statesman of our time
How pathetic! Carter did more good in his one term as president than Reagan and both Bush's combined. From bringing peace to Egypt and Israel, to the Panama Canal Treaties, beginning this country to energy independence (a program which was working until RR dismantled it), The Alaskan Lands Bill, Cleaning up Toxic waste dumps with Super Fund legislation...Do some reading, Carter was a much better president than you think and historians are also beginning to acknowledge that. He also has been a phenomenal ex-president.

Where is Bush's Nobel Peace Prize?

17. Neither Bill or Hillary are nearly the human being
that Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter are. While Bill Clinton has been pulling in 6-figure speaking fees and playing golf with George HW Bush, Jimmy and Rosalynn have been building housing for the disadvantaged, founded the Carter Center for human rights, promoted democracy, peaceful conflict resolution and human rights worldwide, and won the Nobel Peace prize.

You are worthy to kiss Jimmy Carter's wrinkled a**.

21. Bullshit -- But there will be proof for the pudding
If Obama's margin is as narrow as Carter's, your point may have merit. But I doubt that will happen. You are going to see a swell of democratic support much more akin to 1964 than to 1976. Obama will have solid majorities in congress. Let the games begin.

If his policy initiatives had been allowed to continue, the country and the world would be one hell of a lot better off right now.

He was one of the first political victims of the right wing crazies behind the current Regime.

42. Obama is the new Carter.
People tend to forget, when Jimmy Carter emerged in '76, he was the fad candidate. Remember the Carter teeth? Out of nowhere, like Obama, and so up-to-date and contemporary (believe it or not, Obama Youth, carrying your own bags and wearing cardigans went over real well, at first) that he rode to victory on sheer wonderfulness.

And guess what, Obamatrons? He came to power with a DEMOCRATIC Senate AND a DEMOCRATIC House! :wow: Obama will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, even if he defeats McCain.

only wants to throw ignorant, flamebait OPS in the most sensitive place, then run off like the manky, pox-ridden coward it is.

It'll be back tomorrow, because that's what poxy wankers do. Because, of course, it's not like they have any WOMEN who want to spend any time with them. Unless it's Mum, who gives them that nice tea when they come up from the basement now and again.
