ALABAMA SUSA POLL

If there were an election for President of the United States today, and the only two names on the ballot were Republican John McCain and ... Democrat Hillary Clinton, who would you vote for?

McCain 57% Clinton 37%

What if it was John McCain against Democrat Barack Obama?

McCain 58% Obama 34%

Remember those things called electoral votes? I think Obama can win every blue state Hillary would. Plus I think he can win some purple she can't.

171. Florida's rigged. We can forget about Florida.
Obama is winning in Iowa, New Hampshire, Colorado and Nevada, which together have almost as many electoral votes as Florida anyway.

Plus, he's nearly tied with McCain in Kansas and does better than Hillary in semi-blue states like Washington.

A fair comparison for Hillary would be Gore 00's numbers given how well-known they are and how defined they are. The analogues to Obama are Bush 00' and to a lesser extent Kerry 04'. Gore was down by 11 at this point nationally...

144. So if that is true then in 2006 with the corporate media lined up behind republicans.........
doing just about everything and anything to at least keep close for them that they could but still they lost pretty big, why was that? Another clue you might want to ask is with corporate America wanting to pick Hillary as the democratic party nominee that she now seems to be losing? Why was it that the corporations spent so much capital and effort on her? Was it they knew they would get their way with her or was she was a better set up to run against in the general election? She seems to not have much chance now but still feels the need to trash the whole thing if she cannot win. This don't make much sense to me unless she loyalties somewhere else and there will be some kind of payoff to her that has not been told of.

Course then again she really could be that vindictive and spiteful, i have seen some people that are like that........ who knows really

Scared of Hillary and backing off on all that "Obama can turn red states" crap? Now you know why we naysayed all the open caucuses and primaries he won with indie and republican votes. We told you our sources were saying that there was widespread instructions to republicans to go and vote in our caucuses and primaries and vote Obama. All of the breakdown on his elections show the large indie and pug vote. I wonder how many naive people were swayed by that ole "gotta get on the band wagon crap"? If Obama wins, we are screwed, my friends, screwed.

To turn out the votes and carry Georgia for Obama. ;-)

Seriously a 25% decrease in Republican turnout in Georgia and increase in democratic turnout would put GA in play. I don't think that's unreasonable given the apathy of republicans so far in this election and how energized the democratic electorate seems to be.

That's why I had to laugh when people said "OOh, look! Obama's winning the South!!!!"

No, he won't win the South as a whole, in the GE. Not even close. Neither will Hillary. We can slowly change that, but it won't happen this cycle.

20. And only 1/3 would vote for Clinton, so what?
If you're trying to say that Obama would do no better in "red" states than Clinton, I suggest you are mistaken.

Clearly, there are states where there is very little chance the dem nominee will pick up in 2008, but there are others that are more likely to be competitive if Obama is the nominee. I think states like Virginia, NC, Missouri will go more blue (perhaps flip in the presidential race) and dems will be helped down-ticket. Are Utah, Alabama and Mississippi going to go dem in the presidential election? It would take a miracle.

That doesn't mean it's a lost cause.

Alabama

Louisiana
Utah
Oklahoma
Indiana
Idaho
Arizona

I already said Obama will lose FLA in the GE. So will Hillary.

But:

He has a chance at Kansas. HRC loses Kansas to McCain
He is winning WI; HRC is losing WI to McCain
He is winning Iowa. HRC loses Iowa to McCain
He is winning Oregon; HRC is losing Oregon to McCain
He is winning Virginia; HRC is losing VA to McCain
He can win Colorado; HRC has no chance to win Colorado

In fact, I've been unable to find any states that HRC will win, that BO will lose. On the other hand I've found many states that BO has in play, that HRC cannot win.

71. No serious person would expect Obama to win AL
Except for maybe a few over-exhuberent online supporters, nobody believes Obama would win AL in the general. If he did, it would be part of an unprecedented 50-state landslide.

However, Obama would be able to possibly carry states like Louisiana or Arkansas. The best I expect is for Obama to overperform and possibly help a few more southern Democratic House members get in.

Hillary is sort of from the south..she can easily win part of the south

california loves hillary....most of the donations of 200 and over went to hillary's campaign

if obama gets the nomination, it's possible he won't carry california

can anyone win the GE without both california and the south?

doubtful

'92 election: texas, OK, alabama, miss., florida, N carolina, S carolina, Virgina

A Hillary nomination means McDud for president.

Does any one remember some one called ROSS PEROT?!?!?!
If not for him Bill would have lost '92 and probably '96.
Bill only got 43% popular vote in '92 and 49% in '96.

Hillary will do worse than Bill.

With Obama, we win the presidential office and have coattails.

It is more appropriate to look at that data and say "no matter who wins the Democratic nomination, we will probably lose Alabama."

And that is not a surprise.

What if McCain's pants fall down during one of the debates and he wets himself?

Or what if McCain says he wants to bomb Iran before this Christmas during one of the debates, claiming "they would never expect it to come so soon since I haven't won the election yet."

Won't the odds go up then?

closes the margin and wins in a matter of 1-2 weeks.

Those numbers are probably as good or better than the final tally of Bush vs. Kerry in that state which is significant considering how early this is.
