Hillary's "Bozo" moment
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 08:43 AM by FLDem5
In the waning days of his Presidential bid, George HW Bush needed something to jump start his campaign. He was down in the polls, and the "Man from Hope" had momentum that seemed unstoppable. So he listened to his handlers and got a lot of press coverage from the following remark:

"My dog Millie knows more about foreign affairs than these two bozos." George H.W. Bush 1992

It didn't work - and he lost some points from people who, while they wouldn't vote for him, still respected him a little.

Fast forward to 2008 - in another Experience vs. Hope campaign, Senator Clinton is in the same position as GHW. And, choosing to not learn from history she comes out with:

"The sky will open ... the light will come down ... celestial choirs will be singing ... and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect.

Now, she has the added misfortune of not only trying to belittle her opponent, but seems to include his sizable voting bloc in the mockery.

It was ugly then, and its ugly now. I don't think history will look back on this moment with kindness.

1. Sound analogy. Stridency at a telling moment.
Mockery has seldom been a winning strategy for a candidate on the ropes. It won't work this time, either.

2. BITTER TEARS by INXS should be her new campaign song.
She's going down March 4th, but she didn't have to go out so badly.

People remember you most for the last thing you did.

23. I love INXS!
INXS was/is my favorite band. (But, I can't stand the new singer. I watched the show where they chose him and from the first episode I said "anyone but him." So, of course he won. I'm a Michael Hutchence fan through and through, but I would have been ok with anyone else on that show. But I digress...)

I have also suggested "Loser" by Beck as her theme song. Either one will work nicely for her.

6. Probably written by the same people
that wrote speeches for GHW Bush.

The boys have been in control for generations. Why should you expect anything different today?

It's no surprise to me that both Hillary's campaign and Jon McCain's campaign are being run by the same people. That's the way it has always been. They put on this Kabuki Theater to make us think we decide who becomes President.

At least Joe Stalin was up front about the whole charade. The net result is the same.

7. I'm now questioning her intelligence...
I only worked in media relations for 15 years, but I sure know failed, laughable
strategy when I see it.

In a desperate attempt to position Obama and his supporters as a bunch of young, impressionable, dazed-and-confused
hope-a-dopes---she insults millions of Obama supporters. Millions. Not a smart strategy. She's certainly
not going to "win over" voters who have been the target of her belittling.

I'm a 43-year old, stay-at-home mom from the suburbs. I'm the neighbor who has your extra key, and the woman
who organizes the after-school carpool. I'm just a normal, everyday person who supports Barack Obama.

With her arms stretched to the sky---mocking Obama supporters as simpletons basking in "the light" and
"celestial choirs"--Hillary insults every precinct captain and Obama supporter that I know--and millions
of others across the country.

In her latest misguided effort to paint Obama and his supporters as a movement of idiots--she
manages to make herself look like a plate of sour grapes in a pantsuit.

There are many younger people who love Obama and that's great. However, there are also millions of middle-aged
Americans, senior citizens and 30-somethings who look at this and see a political clown--making a complete fool
of herself--and ripping into their character.

This really is not smart at all. What minds will be changed by all of this? NONE. How many Obama supporters
will change to Hillary, after being mocked? NONE.

A political campaign is about winning votes. You don't win votes this way.

9. I like your term...
"Bozo moment". That truly captured what this is.

:hi:

I think there are so many women our age, who support Obama. I know several
precinct captains in my city--and they are just like us.

We've got our feet firmly planted on the ground---but don't tell Hillary that!

She's too busy painting us as nimrods!

Well, actually I've been questioning her character for a long time. But now I think it might be worse than just character flaws... we all have those.

Anyhow, great post, in response to great OP.

Where's the strategy in turning off Democratic voters? Great post Two Sparkles..you weave the reaction as a whole to hilary's rants, very well.

Look how far we've come since Iowa!

24. I'm questioning her mental state as well.
I think the stress has gotten to her - and I'm not trying to be funny here. I'm not saying she needs to be locked up, but she's frazzled and unnerved and erratic - and it's all very obvious. I think she needs a break.

She is quickly becoming a joke. Obama's response has been perfect. It will be interesting to see which Hillary presents itself today....conciliatory Hillary, crying Hillary, angry Hillary, mocking Hillary....what is next sleepy Hillary, grumpy Hillary, bashful Hillary????
