The furor in here yesterday morning over the Nader's entry into the race was predictably overblown of course. He only got 0.38% of the vote in '04.
http://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/I don't think he is an even remote threat to the outcome whatsoever.
I do think he is interjecting himself into the race to see if he can introduce issues that are normally not discussed into the dialogue as he said on MTP and as he also said in '04. I think that at least aspect of his candidacy is sincere.
If memory serves, in '04 he had a snit about not being allowed to participate in the debates after the conventions. I think he was denied entrance to where they were being held. We might see a replay of that scenario.
Still he's getting more press than Edwards or Kucinich got before they dropped out and that's a total shame IMHO.
Reading your Dad's story reminded me of a Congressional election a few years back. My brother has sadly become a bit RW mostly because he spends way too much time on his ham radio. He was all for a guy who was running against Patrick Kennedy in the primary for his congressional seat. I can't remember the guy's name but I think he may have been a vet. I live in a really dinky NE town and we have REALLY strict zoning at the town's common, no neon etc. It was scandalous when a singular pizza parlor came to town.
Well my brother had been working on me to vote for this other guy. I was half thinking I'd humor him by doing so as Patrick was going to win anyway. I drove down to the voting place at the commons and on the telephone pole across the street from the voting place was an enormous sign with my brother's candidate's name on it. It had to be 10 feet by 8 feet. It was so tacky, OTT, and really inappropriate.
I didn't vote for that guy because of it. My brother couldn't believe I based my choice on that.
It's funny. All these pundits and strategists always speculate on why drives people to vote the way they do. When in reality, people often vote on amazingly trivial things. Remember Gore's sighs, Dean's scream, and Hillary's tears?
Most people are not policy wonks. Power transforms people and it's generally a crapshoot. * said he was a "uniter" and couldn't have possibly been more divisive. He also said he wasn't into "nation building" and has pissed away our treasury sloppily attempting to do that very thing.
It's nutz.
I wonder that if your Dad had confronted Nader on that stuff he would have said that he was saving your Dad from getting a cold by picking his nose and saving the environment by swiping his paper.
Someone posted earlier that Nader grew up in their Dad's neighborhood and Nader's mom used to mostly deny her kid's dessert and upon the rare occasion that they'd get cake she'd take it away from them after they had a few bites. Dunno if that's at all true.
Still his anti corporate stance is for real and something to which many can relate. Still I don't think he'll gain anymore votes than he did in '04 really.
Thanks for the story.
