1. You know what makes a person look dorky?
Admitting they cared about the Kerry, Dukakis, or Obama photos.

39. Um
I care.

They turned elections. Like it or lump it, but mocking it is worthy of being mocked.

Will this Obama pic matter? Doubtful. It's grist for those already not voting for that Hussein guy they keep getting emails about.

We win on the other margins. Widely.

keep people from facing the fact that it's actually about racism.

Not.

It could be taken that you're putting down another country and it's traditions. And that's not been working out too well for us for the past seven years.

You go for it, because you realize you can't worry about who you're offending, cause that fear is going to paralyze you. I have yet to hear Jesse Jackson Jr apologize for his words about Hillary's tears. How about you?

I would definitely stop short of offending a nation's cultural traditions.

I believe that you grasp the difference between Clinton's tears and the heritage of a nation.

it made any country or culture or religion or any other group look dorky. That's just flat out projection. He said it made him (Obama) look dorky. And it did. It's like one of those photos that your always embarassed about when your mother hauls them out.

Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 02:21 PM by blm
Bush can.

It's what the press wants to LIE ABOUT.

Press KNEW Kerry is a long distance cyclist. They knew he was a lifetime hunter and an expert marksman. They knew he was a pilot, a good hockey player, and a horseman.

They CHOSE to PRETEND he wasn't while they chose to PRETEND Bush was accomplished.

Dan Rather has admitted that corpmedia needed Bush to stay in office for the favorable rulings they expected.

But you all go along with the lies and smears and VALIDATE the media's tactics and perpetuate the lie.

10. thank you, blm
by the way, I've seen several pictures of Sen. Kerry bicycling, and he looks great, so the poster's out-of-left (right?) field remark is even as perplexing as it is inappropriate. "Dorky" is the last word I'd use to describe a man in his 60's who annually rides his bike across the state of Massachusetts to raise funds for cancer research. Few people half his age could do the same.
And "dorky" is also the last word I'd use to describe Obama, even if he's only a pale shadow of the athlete that Kerry is. ;-)(Though the Sports Illustrated photos of Obama playing basketball during the Iowa primaries show he knows what to do with a basketball, for sure!:))

12. It's Not About What the Press Knew
To the average person (ie, non-cyclist) no one needed the press to call Kerry a dork in that photo, most people got there all by themselves.

Were there no pictures of Bush or was it perhaps the framing that went with the pictures?

13. It's closer to Willy Horton. Guilt by association.
If Obama has had anything to do with the Muslim religion in his lifetime, goes to Africa and dresses in native garb, well . . . there you go. He must be an Islamic terrorist. It's not dorky, it's meant to instill fear. The dim witted among us will be calling the Washington Journal about Barack Hussein Obama and how can we let a terrorist run for president especially since he doesn't wear a flag pin. Hillary is milking the stupid people for all they're worth and the dim bulbs will be lining up to vote for her.

19. Kerry bicycling - what is your problem?
Kerry has been athletic his entire life. At 64 years old he regularly competes in 100 mile charity bike races. While doing that, he is dressed like everyone else in the event. Kerry is not the politician who falls off bikes and scrapes his face regularly. ( That fitness is why he could sweep through Texas for Obama this weekend in spite of spending a gueling week in Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan and India returning late Friday night.)

36. He's really fast, too.
I tried to guess his time in the last PanMass, and I was way off.

Kerry is known as a skilled and fast cyclist who has done a number of ``centuries," or hundred-mile rides, for charity. He bikes -- and kiteboards, windsurfs, and skis -- for his physical and emotional health. ``The point is to get enough exercise to stay healthy, and so that I don't get ornery."

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2006/08/02/john_kerry_takes_fight_against_cancer_personally/

Oh, man. I just recalled that picture of Bush in the culottes and prez socks getting in his motorcade to go for a bike ride. Now THAT was dorky.

I mean, he's tall and slim. It worked. Even with the khakis peeking out from underneath.

But the turban? No.

Check out the other pictures of American leaders in traditional garb. They don't do the headgear.

Lesson learned, O.

30. So, what other GOP talking points do you endorse?
Let's see...Kerry's windsurfing, his not ordering the right cheese on a sandwich?

Gore's earth tones? His "stiffness"? His "not knowing who he is"?

Geez, if it were up to DU, we wouldn't NEED the corporate media to trash-talk our candidates. Some people here repeat this crap as if it were gospel. And it is; GOP and media gospel.

Obama was right about one thing: it IS the silly season, and some people on DU are the silliest of all.

I don't think Kerry looks "dorky" at all, nor does Obama in the now-famous (in DU anyway) photo.

38. No, I strongly disagree
There are tens of thousand of photos of politicians wearing regional and international clothes that were given to him or her by the people of that place to honor him or her. Hundreds of those photos show Presidents of the United States

Americans are not dumb. They know the difference between a publicity stunt like Dukakis in a tank, and genuine personal international relations.

ALL THEY NEED IS CONTEXT. They need to see it in the correct context and then it all makes sense. It is a microcosm of a political career. If one lets one's opponent rip an incident out of the proper context and spin it negatively before the public understands the big picture of your career and has a degree of trust in you, the negative spin will likely stick.

If Obama takes ownership of images like that and matter of factly takes credit for what he is able to achieve through moments like that for our nation, the negative spin spins out and he turns it into a positive. But he has to do something different than complain every time someone shows a photo of him like that or mentions his middle name.
