4. Exactly -- that's what Obama is saying in his campaign
He can't do it alone -- he's looking for US to encourage our representatives to work together constructively (and having a strong mandate from the people will help him press his case with them as well).

This country has WANTED to be united since 9/11. RatBastard hasn't tried to bring us together (really), and neither did Kerry very strongly. Obama is the first candidate since 9/11 who's seen the potential in campaigning for UNITY, not for continuing the politics of divide and conquer.

The country has wanted to be united since George Washington left office
But it hasn't happen. Maybe there is something inherent in the two party system that is causing it...

3. Why? Why does the country have to be united?
Give an example. You mean like one political party? One religion? One leader? One fatherland? Or one motherland, if you prefer?

I have heard or read about a "united people" a "united country"for many years. I have no idea what it means.

We have a United States.....That's our name. Not good enough?

6. Seeing that we're all Americans before Dems or Repugs, that's all
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 03:35 PM by LSparkle
It's not that we won't have our differences, but before Lee Atwater and his scorched-earth politics, there was always an underlying this feeling that, at the end of the day, we were all in this together. We could 'agree to disagree' and not demonize our opponent. That's what I see as a "united" country, not necessarily selling out your principles and caving in to the other side.

11. No - the name isn't good enough. We need to LIVE it.
We don't have to all march in lockstep, but we DO have to realize that all the "us versus them" mentality only hurts us in the long run.

Not one political party, not one religion, but working together to do what's RIGHT for the people.

If I were viewing the US from space, and watching all the infighting and skirmishes I'd be thinking Machiavelli would be proud.

We're ALL for our freedom of speech, our right to earn a fair living and provide for our families, our desire to help those less fortunate. Within those broad strokes, we can choose our different approaches, but the bottom line is, we have to be united to achieve what we all want.
