I have been following the issue of McCain accepting federal matching funds in his primary campaign for some time now.

If the FEC refuses to allow McCain to weasel out his commitment to accepting federal matching funds, he will be essentially broke until the RNC Convention in early September, hobbling his campaign.

Might the GOP find some way to allow McCain to formally accept their nomination for president several months early?

This would allow McCain the possibility to opt out of federal financing for the general election and raise an unlimited amount of money.

I know the Kerry people threw this idea around in 2004, but it never went anywhere.

Or will hundreds of millions of dollars be diverted to pro-McCain 527s that will act as his surrogates until he is back in the game in September?

Both options would not be favorable to the so called champion of campaign finance reform, but these seem to be the only options at his hands if the FEC holds firm (which it probably will not unfortunately).
