Poll question: Hill is DONE. Vote for SERIOUS OBAMA V.P OPTIONS to Neutralize McCain
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 11:29 AM by Sensitivity
In 2004 John Kerry wanted to take Clark as V.P. The party voices rallied behind the John Edwards lobby and Kerry caved. That denied Kerry the National Security strength to hit back at the Swifties. We know what happenned.

Please don't do the same to Obama!!!

He absolutely must make a National Security V.P selection to begin to neutralize McCain's war and terror advantage. He also wants to win with a national coalition which crosses party lines in order to be able to get things done.

PLEASE STOP SUGGESTING V.P CHOICES THAT UNDERMINE THAT OBJECTIVE. THE RIGHT V.P. AND WE WIN!!

Wes Clark is known here and is an obvious favorite. But Clark has been criticising Obama so we may want to do some research into the others who are more likely for a change, and take a little time to think. For example:

Senator James Webb's is a highly decorated Vietnam War combat veteran with a son in Irq. During his four years with the Reagan administration, Webb served as the first Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, then as Secretary of the Navy. As a former Republican he could help win independents and the state of Virginia.

General David Petraeus is not just Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and "America's most respected soldier” but this preeminent military strategist has a Ph.D. in International Relations from Princeton University. He has approached Iraq just the way Clark and others recommended – from a position of strength he negotiated strategic compromises with former enemies. Has expressed interest in presidential politics, let it be as a Democrat.

General Anthony Zinni is a highly decorated combat veteranand one of the most respected and outspoken military leaders of the past two decades.

When he retired in 2000 he was commander-in-chief of the United States Central Command, in charge of all American troops in the Middle East, but after being appointed special envoy to the Middle East he broke with the Bush administration and became one of the fiercest critics of Bush Iraq war. In his book "The Battle For Peace" (2006) Zinni argues that the roots of the world's growing turmoil are not being addressed and that America's aggressive confidence is making it worse--with potentially devastating implications for the safety of Americans

Here are some choices with National Security experience that meet those objectives.

27. Actually Obama is most likely to pick Tim Kaine, who is a great campaigner and organizer
and will deliver the bigger state of Virginia

Richardson was not a good campaigner, and that would make a black-Hispanic ticket when Obama is going to win the Latino vote anyhow big-time.

Virginia, and with it maybe North Carolina and even Georgia, is a much bigger prize in electoral votes in the end.

A black-white southern male ticket.

Plus Kaine endorsed Obama a year ago and cannot run for another term as Gov. And there are NO Senate seats for him to run for either in VA! His Lt. Gov would become the Gov and run as an incumbent in 2009!

THink about it. Kaine is far more likely than Richardson who just doesn't have the oomph a good candidate should have.

79. VA's Lt. Governor is a Republican.
In Virginia, they run separately.

I don't know if it would be good for VA to lose a Democratic Governor like Kaine, for someone like Bill Bolling.

Even though I would like Kaine to be a V.P.

Or even Mark Warner of VA, though he's running for Senate, I'd like him as a V.P.

127. I don't have a problem with the guy's looks.
I have a problem with some of the things he's done. He tried to get the weapons inspectors to lie about WMD's so Clinton could bomb Iraq (yeah sound like another administration we know?). I also have a problem with the destroyed/dissapeared New Mexico ballots. He's a Clinton player. Not the kind of guy Obama needs on a ticket that encourages change and transparency.

As for your options, if I had to pick one, I'd go with Webb or maybe Zinni.

No fucking way in hell I'd pick Hagel or Patraeus. Patraeus, as the most recent conductor of the war in Iraq, would nullify Obama's antiwar position -- a colossal mistake when running against pro-war McCain. And Hagel? Fuck that noise. No way that guy should be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Petraeus has negotiated the little reduction in violence that now exists rather than
escalating with search and destroy missions. He has done it the inteligent democratic way.

25. Petraeus took on the job of prosecuting the Iraq War for Bush when no one else would.
He's an errand boy for the status quo. As for the current little reduction in violence, we can talk all day about why that is, whether it's "the surge," the Mahdi Army's ceasefire, or the simple fact that most of the ethnic cleansing has already taken place. As one Sunni noted in a recent Wall Street Journal article when discussing his neighborhood, "Even the birds that fly over our heads are Sunni now."

I disagree that Gen. Petraeus has been responsible for brokering a measure of peace in Iraq. And even if he does, to the typical voter, he represents prosecution of the Iraq War, which means that adding him to the ticket destroys Obama's position as an advocate of ending the war in Iraq. Adding Petraeus to the ticket would be a colossally bad move.

He would be the perfect Clintonite to bring into the fold...

He did more defending Kerry than Edwards (with his sour grapes mentality) did.

Clark is a good soldier and is more interested in policy and personal advancement
than loyalty to the Clinton family, methinks.

And he's anti-war, unlike the rest of the Clinton camp.

Like Richardson, he's only allied to the Clintons because he was promoted by their administration.

12. None of the above, and particularly not that ass kisser Petraeus!
Obama should pick a woman governor as running mate because it is the economy and immigration that are going to be problems. Janet Napolitano or Kathleen Sebelius would be great on the ticket.

Obama should consider someone like former General Zinni for Secretary of State, which would signal that he is putting peace in the Middle East as the top of his foreign policy agenda.

We need Kerry and Webb in the Senate to help carry Obama's legislative agenda. Perhaps Kerry will challenge that worthless Harry Reid for majority leader.

Biden would be good at the Pentagon, plus his son could be appointed to replace him in the Senate. Biden is my second choice for Secretary of State, Zinni my first.

You have to have a Washington Insider and you have to highlight gravitas and you have to emphasize Foriegn Policy and national Security over a "let's kick some arab ass menetality".

It is tricky and I think you do have to blunt the IslamoFascist are the enemy screed....I think you need to give a nod to a strong military and a stron Homeland Security/National Security team. but you do that by arguing from a TR perspective of Speak Softly and carry a big stick..." I do not think you necessarily need a general to play that role.

Maybe Bob Kerrey?

Obama needs to win the southern states and red states to get a landslide. I know the people "down here".. Lieberman hurt Gore down here and unfortunately, Kerry didn't go over well even with Edwards on the ticket. Its the northern elite thing, I think, that would render a Biden VP probably not an asset in SOME states. Although I'd love to see Biden there, personally.

A strong military presence would help, IMO.

65. That's 2 in two centuries. And i have my doubts about Eisenhower.
How about Grant? The most corrupt administration, before this one. Can't say how Harrison would have done, since he died after 30 days. Any other career military? (Actually, you can't count Washington because his military service was a few years in the French & Indian War and 8 years in the revolution - the rest of the time he was a gentleman farmer, landowner, surveyor, not career military).

Historically we have avoided putting career military at the head of the government because the needs of running the nation are NOT equivalent to the needs of running an army. A general doesn't need to politic - he says what he wants, and people jump to do it. The last 7 years have been government of that style - we don't need it.

Biden is probably the best from an electoral standpoint. He appeals to the sort of ethnic, Catholic, blue collar Dems that have been slow to warm up to Obama, firms up the ticket in DE, PA, and NJ, and is an articulate and experienced campaigner.

The average voter doesn't give a shit about Iraq, aside from the money being blown on it. Obama's "hope" and "change" is mostly about a populist sounding message. That's why he'll probably choose either an unknown, or Edwards.

The AG will be THE most important executive position to those of us who are interested in investigations of Bushco, who want Siegelman released, who want the books opened, and want the bastards prosecuted for their crimes. Kerry, as a Senator, led investigations into BCCI and Iran-Contra, run by the same damn cohort who are running our government now, and would've continued if President Clinton had not ended it. He shouldn't be hobbled as VP, shouldn't be put as SoS when there are many qualified people for it, and isn't even appreciated by his own state. We need a proven investigator and prosecutor to nail these crooks.

Obama has been a voice for the logical prosecution of war against terrorists, and it doesn't involve spending 3 trillion dollars in the wrong fucking country, something McCain embraced with all his heart and soul.

With McCain and whatever loon he selects, there will already be two Repubs in the race. We don't need 3 of the 4 people on major-party tickets to be from that disgraced party.

delusional if you think the Dems are going to have anything to do with a pro-war cheerleader and sycophant. If you believe he's some sort of "genius", then you're on the wrong board. He's a bribery king--that's all he's been doing in Iraq. Paying bribes, and using airstrikes to terrorize "insurgents", and restricting Iraqis' movements and activities, and using Iraqis to fight each other. Your other choices are OK--especially Webb and Hagel. But, Zinni is an unknown, and Petraeus is a Repub asshole.

I know he has supported Clinton, but I believe he is a consumate professional and, if he accepted the role, would campaign incredibly well, balance McCain's strong suit and totally kill anyone the R's can trot out in a debate setting. He would not undermine Obama's campaign at the request of the DLC,
the way the DLC urged Edwards to repudiate Kerry's talking points.

97. Take a look at Richardson's resume. He was the only one running who actually...
negotiated with North Korea, Iraq, and Iran. He was our Ambassador to the UN.

Just some food for thought. Until Cheney came along, VP's didn't play much of a role in national security.

If you want someone for national security, then you get a great secretary of defense, and secretary of state, not a VP. Clark would make a great SOD, but I wouldn't make him Secretary of State. For that position I would look for another/next Madeline Albright.

You want foreign policy and national security experience, not military experience.

Take Colin Powell as an example. When it came time for him to exercise independent judgement and common sense, he failed. He saluted, followed orders, and disgraced himself, his career and our country at the UN.

Joe Biden or Bill Richardson would be good choices.

122. The only President in the 20th Century was Eisenhower
And Ike was a somewhat special case, since he was picked out of the officer's corp by George Marshall and moved into high-level staff planning -- he didn't rise through the usual ass-kissing route. Plus, as Supreme Commander in Europe, he gained a fairly unique combination of organizational and political experience.

Teddy Roosevelt was maybe a Colonel?

I suppose that George Bush I, as Director of the CIA, had a general equivalent rank in the national security establishment.

George Washington was another special case.

U S Grant was a disaster.

Andrew Jackson was a very controversial President.

Harrison didn't last long.

Who do you have in mind as a great ex-general President?
