What's with this Congresswoman Tubbs Jones?
I've heard Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Congresswoman from Ohio, campaigning for Hillary before with some very questionable statements, but today takes the cake. Just heard a tape of her on the radio saying that in the picture of Obama in the African clothing he was "wearing clothing of his NATIVE country, that's all". So now they are saying Obama was born and raised in Kenya?? Is she as nuts as Hillary? Obama's native country is the US! How low can they go?

40. You know, most blacks used to claim Africa as their "native land."
"The Negro National Anthem" even has words to this. Blacks who are born in America used to be proud to claim Africa as their native land because that is where many of their ancestors came from. So what is the big deal?

She was continuing with the lame attempt to do exactly what the release of this picture to Drudge was attempting to do. It is sad to see some people ruining their own reputations by staking their own career on Hillary winning the nomination. I think Tubbs Jones hooked her star to Hillary a long time ago and has gone as off the wall as Hillary has.

58. "in his native clothing, the clothing of his country"
MF you are correct in your assertion as far as it goes although the precis given is probably kinder than the original statement. The original statement throws out the two slurs as emphasis for each other.
1) "Native clothing" as in "look at that native"
2) "Clothing of his country" with the deep implication that Obama is not American

This is dirty - very dirty,

You have a brain, MonkeyFunk, please use it. We all know you do not like Obama for what, to you, seem good reasons but there is no reason now to like a campaign that has just gone beyond the pale.

Is Democratic Congresswoman using House Web site to campaign for Hillary?

It sure is odd that outspoken Hillary surrogate, Democratic Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) - the person who launched a racist attack on Obama today - has a picture of herself and Hillary on her House congressional office Web site home page. The picture is from an event a year ago. Yet it still remains on Tubbs Jones' House home page as news 12 months later. Perhaps Tubbs Jone's staff is so incompetent that they haven't changed their home page in a year so that it just happens to be promoting Hillary one week before the crucial do-or-die primary in Tubbs Jones' own state, Ohio. Perhaps.

You decide. (Note, it would be a violation of House rules for Tubbs Jones to use her congressional Web site to campaign for anyone.)

41. Move your cursor over the image. Click your mouse, and before releasing,
move your cursor to your desktop. If it's copying properly, you should see the image moving with your cursor. Once your cursor is over your desktop, release the mouse button. Once it's copied to your desktop, note the name of the image so you know what image to upload to DU.

To use it as your avatar, you'll need to access your profile by clicking on the "Options" button at the top of the DU screen. From there, click the "Edit your profile" link. From there, click the "upload" link in the "Avatar Image" section. Then click the "Upload Image" button. When you click that button, you'll need to select the name of the image you copied to your desktop. Once you've selected the image, click the "JPEG" file button. Click the "Upload File!" button.

If you're not already using a personalized avatar image, you'll need to change one more thing through your profile. You'll need to specify in the Avatar Image prompt that you're using a personal avatar:

Avatar Image
You can choose from following images or upload your own. To use your uploaded avatar, add the following to your avatar box: personal/######.(gif or jpg)

Note the number your profile is assigned and include it in the "Avatar Image" prompt - "personal/######.jpg"

I hope that's somewhat clear. ;-)

Be patient, as my avatar changes haven't always displayed instantaneously.

Good luck. :hi: If you have any other questions, feel free to ask here or PM me. B-)

30. Tubbs-Jones is a lawyer and a congressperson. She knew exactly what she was saying.
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 01:40 PM by Skidmore
The implication is that Barack Obama is something other than he is, that he is some sort of fifth column-Manchurian candidate with connections to Islam that are somehow nefarious. It is part of that whisper campaign that he's Muslim, went to a madresseh, won't wear a flag pin or put his hand over his heart for the pledge, and is therefore, connected to terrorists. By referring to Somalia and native dress is an oblique reference to the Blackhawk Down incident. Tubbs-Jones' statement was despicable and vile. She meant to inflict harm by playing on words and images associated with hatred and bigotry.

She was hand picked when Louis Stokes retired. She's run virtually unopposed since then. Talk about rock star reception, Stephanie gets that in Cleveland. Her recent behavior has been extrememly troubling for many people in my district. Many feel she is expecting a cabinet position with Hillary.

I don't know if she'll ever be defeated in her distict but she has made it a lot easier with her behavior as Hillary's National Co-Chair.

what she said, it didn't raise any flags or any other cliche you might want to use. I didn't think any thing like the native son type thing until I read it here. One thing I do know though is if something as minor as this is said and you are upset about it, the more you protest the more legit it seems. Have you ever heard "ignore it it will go away" If you keep screaming it from the roof tops people will start to think there is something to it.It's called picking your battles. Just my opinion.

Maybe some of you from Ohio who posted on this thread can let us know if the following is correct, posted on Ambinder, from a reader of his:

Reader J.K. writes:

FYI: Columbus (as you know the largest city in Ohio) is home to the second-largest collection of Somali ex-pats in the nation (Minneapolis is first). Columbus' Somali population is in the tens of thousands, and most estimates range from 30,000 to 45,000. As with any large influx of ethnically and nationally distinct people into a largely culturally homogenous area, assimilation efforts have been tough going. From my experience, there is definitely an underlying tension (among white and African Americans alike) regarding Somalis here in Columbus. I'm not necessarily suggesting that this was part of the calculus in pushing the image (indeed, we still don't know for sure who pushed it or why they did), but it is something to think about.

49. I heard the soundbite and I just think the woman is dumb as a bag of nails
She probably doesn't know the difference between Somalia and Kenya, let alone doesn't know that Obama is an American. Maybe she doesn't know that Obama was born in Hawaii, which she thinks is Japanese.

52. One of my heroes - one of the Florida 14. Like Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee
spoke up re: Florida electoral votes. Other heroes of mine you are trashing: paul krugman, Joseph Wilson. Just thought I'd keep a running list.

and protected their secrecy and privilege throughout the 90s.

65. In this case the HRC campaign has had one of it's members dive
under the bus

"in his native clothing, the clothing of his country"

Not a slip of the tongue, for if it was then the second half of the sentence would not have been added. It was a direct attack by a Clinton supporter.

86. No, RD she did not "Make a mistake"
She used 2 statements, both denigrating individually and together plain slime and at no time did she hesitate or attempt to change those statements. You criticise the Obama campaign tirelessly but you cannot for one second admit her faults

60. She'll get a wake up call when her district votes for Obama.
She represents a very Democratic and largely black district in Cleveland.

62. I was listening to the Warren Ballentine show today
and a lot of the Black listeners from her district were calling in saying there will be hell to pay for her in Ohio. She is going to have a serious primary challenge when she is up for reelection. lol

Someone may want to go ahead and point that out to the obviously well educated congresswoman.

72. Just saw her on Hardball...and she simply looks ridiculous, like everything is a joke....
and she butts in and doesn't allow anyone else to talk. She reminds me of that one relative in my family that I don't invite to gathering because I just feel like always saying to her...."Shut up and let other people talk for once!"

What a shame she wasn't running things all along.

Actually, I should've been running things for the Goddess of Peace. Obama would've conceded by now. :smoke:

78. Sorry.....I disagree.
She's a bit desperate because she picked the wrong horse......and is attempting not to lose face. But she has already, and she knows it...which is why she rarely lets other folks talk, and why she continues to have that silly grin on her face. As a Black woman, I can detect a complex when I'm looking at it.
