automatically a U.S. citizen. There are two types of citizens..natural and naturalized. Naturalized are immigrants who apply for citizenship and study and pass a test then are sworn allegiance to the country. Natural citizens are ones born to U.S. citizens at home or abroad.

edited to add. This was learned in high school government class when I was in school in the 1950's.

if/when McCain criticizes him in a debate and hints at his "foreign-sounding" name, Barack can just say, "Well, John, as a Panamanian, you should know some of the difficulties new arrivals to this country have..."

1909 in Phoenix, before Arizona had became a state but he was still a "native born" U.S. citizen.

American Territory until the canal was turned back to Panama. 1795 immigration law says he is considered a US citizen born overseas as his parents were and one was in the military. Case Closed.
