Hillary Clinton is at a town hall, listening to an elderly man vent about financial problems . . .
from The Swamp: (http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/02/26/703052.aspx)

Making a visit to the northern manufacturing community of Lorain, Clinton made an appeal to the middle class before she ventured to a snowy Cleveland — the site of her final debate with Barack Obama before the all important March 4 primaries in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Ohio, she noted, has lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs since the Bush presidency. As for Obama, she contended “it is easy to criticize” NAFTA, but she said she plans to produce on efforts to seeking higher labor and environmental standards through the appointment of a special trade prosecutor.

Clinton said she was impressed by the “grit” and the “resilience” of Ohioans who “don’t ask for any help that they’re not entitled to but deserve to have a president who will work with you to solve the problems that people here and across Ohio face.”

“I have every confidence that we can turn America around, that we can turn Ohio around, that we can have the kind of future that not just young people but all people deserve,” the two-term senator from New York said.

From NBC’s Ron Allen: (http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/02/26/703052.aspx)

LORAIN, Ohio -- Hillary Clinton is at a town hall here, listening to an elderly man vent about financial problems; he’s either losing or lost his house -- he was hard to understand because of an accent. It was a very odd moment, with Clinton standing just a few feet from him. It was a bit tense because he was so emotional. Clinton accepted an envelope from him and promised to help. She has two residents on stage with her who are facing foreclosures; they told their stories to the crowd.

During the moment when a disabled veteran asked a long, difficult to understand question that seemed to have something to do with losing his home and being a good parent, Clinton held the microphone for him and listened intently as he spoke before accepting a packet of papers from him and saying she would try to help.

22. Pro-Obama here
Not "anti-Hill", though I do occasionally get incensed at one of her statements or actions of her campaign staff, as you guys sometimes feel towards Obama.

34. The videos there are a few minutes and don't show him answering any questions.
The fact of the matter is, he's done DAMNED few of them.

Clinton does several EVERY DAY.

I haven't seen ANY of them on CNN. I've seen clips of his "speechifying on high" but not full sessions.

4. That is the truth.
People don't really need speeches. They need action and they need it now.

6. What action?
Listen to people talk is action? Praising NAFTA while it takes millions of jobs overseas is action?

33. Too bad neither of the major candidates is willing to change the root cause of the bad economy there
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 09:36 PM by Leopolds Ghost
“it is easy to criticize” NAFTA, but... she was impressed by the “grit” and the “resilience” of Ohioans who “don’t ask for any help that they’re not entitled to."

Wonderful

Let's look at it another way: If telecom spying act passed, domestic spying
would become permanently legal because the media would shift again so far to the
right that, to "go backwards" and repeal the bill is not an option, and would
result in political / media death for the party. "To go backwards" on any bill
the neoliberal elite supports is not an option. They want to redefine themselves
as the only real liberals.

So consider this:

If NAFTA were on the table today, for the first time, would your
congressmen vote for it?

If not, why are they unwilling to go back and stick a fork in it?

Fear of what the "liberal" media would say?

It's like the conservatives with their constant baseless promises that
they will overturn Roe v. Wade, an act their wealthy corporate backers
would never condone... which is the only judgement that matters when it
comes to deciding whether or not a policy is wise and proper.

What the wealthiest think.

Orwellian promises and threats that will never come to fruition,
to keep us believing that candidate A truly cares, and candidate B
does not. Like college sports. It is against our primitive genetic
make-up to envision that neither our team nor our traditional rival
will solve our problems, only continue raising money to build a
bigger stadium and pay the people on the inside bigger salaries.
