In response, I tried Googling with the word "record" and the phrase "John Kerry," but didn't find what the record number of donors is or how many John Kerry had for the 2004 presidential primary.

The article above implies that about 3.3 million people donated to a presidential candidate in 2004 (475,000 big donors plus 2.8 million small donors, rounded up.)

If 300,000 people donated to someone besides Kerry and Bush, and they got about half each of the remaining people, that would make about 1.5 million donors each.
