A weekend rally for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was supposed
to leave a hopeful tone in Longview, Texas.

Instead, it left a sour note as vandals spray-painted racial slurs outside the campaign headquarters.

"I don't even know why anyone would do this except ignorance you know, total ignorance, " said installation technician Lonzell Johnson.

It was a site that "Towles Phone Center" technicians never wanted to see. The phrase "a racist" was spray painted on the hood and the sides of two of their company vans.

I didn't even know about it until my FIL Charlie told me about it. Charlie just happened to show up at our house and noticed the tag.

Charlie grew up in the depression and his father was very friendly with the black community. He invited them to his house for dinners.
Charlie's parents would then get a visit by the racist white guys warning his dad he better watch out, and stop being friendly with the n_____s. This didn't deter Charlie's dad one bit.

So, Charlie grew up with a deep understanding about racism, and the respect the black people deserve. And not to let people bully you into hating a group of people out of fear or ignorance.

Charlie teased me about my tagging, he thought it was kinda funny. However, I never understood why someone would do such a thing. Lucky for me it was only shoe polish and I could just wash it away.


An interesting side note: I was just discussing a couple hours ago about posting Charlie's and my story. I had no idea that I would be doing it this soon.

I live in Texas by the way. And yes there still is a lot of racism here as else where in this country. It really is a sick sad world.
