Tolerance means respecting the right of other people to have differing opinions. It does not mean accepting all of those opinions as valid and healthy.
I respect the rights of those who want to believe McCain would make a good president. I do not agree with them and will use every opportunity to educate them as to the reasons why he would be detrimental to our country and the world.
I respect the rights of those who believe Obama and/or Hillary would make a horrible president and be the demise of every principle we hold dear. While I'm lukewarm, at best, towards both of these candidates I see the alternative as unbearable and will again educate them as to why I think this way.
What I will not tolerate is heavy-handed threats of property destruction and personal violence towards someone who does not agree with me. I don't care if the person is the biggest idiot on the planet and wants presidential term limits lifted so Shrub can remain president. I will not stoop to the level of seeking to render him homeless and violating his health and safety.
I can appreciate hyperbole, but these days I don't think that is what is going on. Whether you say it out loud, high-five someone who did or silently nod and think to yourself that you too would like to engage in such behaviors, you are equally culpable of dehumanizing another person like yourself. And that cognitive step is where evil takes root.
Today I am deeply saddened and shamed that such words and behavior have been not only accepted, but celebrated at DU. What have we come to?
