Labeling: When Hillary complains about the press/media it's "whinning."
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 09:08 AM by jasmine621
When Obama or McCain complain about the media it's "calling them out." The double standards by the pundits (especially MSNBC) are just disgusting.

5. Exactly!
Even last night.. he didn't complain about Hillary's "distorted" flyers and robo calls.. he said, it's part of the political process. Even when given the opportunity, he didn't whine.. he looked.. err.. presidential?

9. Right. He always takes pains to say that everything that happens is expected in a primary.
Hillary acts shocked and horrified and, yes, whines about it.

17. He has "called them out" on a couple of issues about his religion.
Like I said, he is not labeled as "whinning" or 'complaining". Most of the time he has no reason to do so since most of the time the media carries his water.

21. really? I have never seen him call out the media and you havent
provided so much as a shred of evidence that he has. You're repeatedly saying it, doesn't make it true. So either put up some evidence or retract your claim.

31. Well, frankly - he has less water to carry..
Obama doesn't come with as much baggage as Clinton does. There isn't as much to choose from - so it's a bit tough to say that they're always tough on Clinton and give Obama a free ride when they have a lot more opportunity with her.

They were both thrown curveballs last night in the debate - i'd say equally.

I think many sexist comments go unnoticed, even by those who use them. It is so ingrained.

It's whining and I hope that young women aren't paying attention to her strategy. As a successful woman, I find it horribly distasteful and damaging.

6. I disagree with the use of the term in a political context
When someone uses "whine" to make a political point, it indicates a severe level of "spin".

But I don't think the term is sexist; I think it is infantilizing.

I have known my share of whiny men. In fact, let me think, oh yes the current chimp smirking POTUS is one of them. He has a point to make, one that the people here in Murka just don't get on account of that guldarn LIBRAL medja.

10. He doesn't complain.
He either disregards it or jokes about it. That type of response is why he is the success he is today. He's been that way his whole life.

If he focused on silly things, he'd be nowhere.

13. Correct. Obama does not complain about the media, or about his opponents' campaign tactics.
He takes it in stride, and as such looks Presidential. By letting the little things go, he looks confident and in-control. Hillary's whining does not inspire similar confidence.

11. As a professional woman, it drives me crazy when female leaders act this way
I am a divorce attorney - and a woman. I have seen several worthy judicial female candidates lose because when campaigns got heated, they would yell, get mad, "whine" - what have you. Yes, it is a double standard - men aren't characterized the same way. And yes - it is not fair. But as the great Ann Richards once said, "the fair is in October." Ann Richards knew how to handle the press and move forward on issues as a strong woman. No one ever criticized her for whining or complaining. Women have to work harder to maintain their strong credibility. When Sen. Clinton wants to make issue of who is asked the first question, etc. it makes ALL WOMEN LOOK BAD. I wish Ann Richards were live today. Because she could kick all of their asses.

And finally - YES I support Obama. You know why??? Because I WANT A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT more than I want a female president. I can't take 4 more years of this crap. Right now, today, Obama polls better against McCain that Clinton. Yes, I know that could change, etc. etc. But all I have to go on is today. I want to win and this is the best way I know how to do it. And today OBAMA has a better shot at the big one than Clinton.

the guys when she needed it and then be as graceful as needed the next moment. She was a class act and never complained about something being unfair!!

Too bad she wasn't the 1st female president. She would have been one of the best.

time here as well. My youngest, in 2nd grade, mentioned during the debate last night that all the kids in his class want Obama to win. That says a lot since the kids at that age are an indication of where the people are going.

12. Whining isn't a sexist term. RW Bill Cunningham has taken whining to a new level.
I don't see the term as sexist.

But generally it's something losers do.

"It's someone else's fault." "Look how mean they are to me." "It's not fair!" Generally aren't the catch phrases of someone ready to lead.

15. So what was that Obama's campaign was doing .....
About the Drudge picture?

That wasn't whining? That wasn't the right-wing media? That wasn't accusing the Clinton campaign with no actual proof, instead choosing to believe Matt Drudge?

None so blind as those who will not see, my nana used to say.

18. It's revolting, and Americans are being played for fools, once again.
If Obama gets the nom, the whole dynamic will immediately change. Obama will become the media's new Hillary, count on it. Every attempt on his part to counter the right wing swiftboating onslaught will be laughed at and/or demonized. This promises to be a VERY ugly election.

23. Oh, I think he'll handle it much better than hilly has.
Over the last 2 weeks, he has been getting it from the MSM, and he's dealt with it deftly. It's sure to amplify, but I doubt he'll be as clumsy as hilly. There's been no sign of that kind of weakness from Obama.

Geraldine Ferraro, Ellen Goodman (writer for Boston Globe), Pat Schroeder and a gal from The Nation, Katha Pollitt. Excellent points made by Ferraro about the double standard.

28. actually, that would be ironic instead of petulant
since her 31 years of experience count her husband's term, that administration released restrictions on media ownership and laid the groundwork for the media problems we have today.

so, it is ironic for her to voice objection.
