4. MSNBC has never been a ratings juggernaut, but MSNBC's debate got 7.8 million viewers
FNC has never broke 4 million in any of their debates.

6. MSNBC was making progress (via Dems) but becoming the official Obama channel must have hurt them
When you blatantly side with half of Democrats you are going to alienate the other half.

7. In what demographic?

Faux News, and O'Reilly in particular, have quite often cherry-picked the ratings numbers. I would not be surprised at all if those numbers came from a particular demographic segment, such as "Males Over 50" - which is not the demographic segment which is important in terms that the advertisers like. Which is the whole point of these ratings in the first place.

13. That's a BIG clue right there

If it was in one of the big demo segments, they would have touted the fact.

Democratic Debate Most-Watched Program in the History of MSNBC

In addition to being the third-most watched debate of this election cycle, last night's Democratic showdown in Cleveland was MSNBC's most-watched program in the 11-year history of the network. In a head-to-head 9pmET match-up, the debate was second only to FOX's American Idol. It ranked as the fourth most-watched program in Total Viewers on all of TV last night.

"I'm proud that millions of viewers were able to experience the most anticipated debate of the season on MSNBC," said NBC SVP Phil Griffin in a press release.

The numbers for the debate, which was moderated by Brian Williams, joined by Tim Russert, more than doubled MSNBC's previous Total Viewer high of 3.7 million who watched on March 19, 2003, the night the Iraq war began.

NEW YORK — Feb. 27, 2008 — MSNBC's telecast of last night's Democratic candidates debate drew 7.8 million viewers (9-10:36 p.m. ET), becoming the most watched broadcast in the eleven year history of the network, according to Nielsen Media Research. The debate, between Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama, was moderated by "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, joined by "Meet the Press" moderator and NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert. It is the third most watched debate this season and the second most watched on cable.

"Voters are incredibly engaged and passionate about the presidential election; it's one of the most exciting in history. I'm proud that millions of viewers were able to experience the most anticipated debate of the season on MSNBC," said Phil Griffin, Senior Vice President, NBC News and executive in charge of MSNBC. "This is an exciting time for MSNBC, and numbers like these show that our work in establishing the network as the place for politics over the past two years has paid off."

The debate was the #4 program of the night, broadcast or cable, in total viewers and ranked second only to "American Idol"/"Back to You" on Fox in its time period. The debate was also the #1 cable program of the night among total viewers and Adults 25-54. Last night's debate averaged 3.24 million Adults 25-54, also a record for the network. Last night's debate shatters MSNBC's previous total viewer high, 3.7 million viewers (8-11 p.m. on March 19, 2003, the beginning of the Iraq war).

15. Bill O'Reilly - capo di tutti capi
The only reason that FOX News came out on top of MSNBC is because Bill O'Reilly sent his Soldatos (google Jesse Watters) to harass the opposition. FOX News is literally a crime organization using mafia methods to get where it is today. And O'Reilly is the capo di tutti capi of FOX News' mafia wing.

17. MSNBC came #2 AFTER American Idol
NOT after Fox news channel lies or Bill O...

now we know we are considered the most untouched adn stupid people on the planet. Americans would rather watch American Idol than a debate between candidates running to be their president. I doubt and highly what bill spews..

We should all send him an e-mail and give him the real news of last night's debate..

20. When?
Last night? For the month? The year?

If he was talking about yesterday -- cumulatively, MSNBC was ahead of Fox News for the day, and shellacked them during the debate.

23. was listening to KO tonight. he indicated that Bill O/Fox tend to
play with the numbers by including their Primary election coverage as part of their "regular" news broadcasts which skews numbers. What a surprise, Bill O and Fox, cooking the books.

25. MSNBC does the same. So does CNN.
I'm not defending Fox here but the truth is that Fox News is the 3rd most watched cable channel, day in and day out, independent of whether or not they run political coverage or a debate (and remember, they've only run Republican debates thus far). I know that there are a lot of fans of MSNBC on this board but it's an also-ran to both Fox News and CNN in terms of viewers.

I went to that TV Newser blog. KO came in 3rd in viewers behind CNN and MNSBC in both overall viewers and in what they call a key demo (younger viewers). That's not good news for progressives.

We can ignore Murdoch's machine if we want to but don't ever make the mistake of dismissing it. It gets viewers and shapes discussions in the general public, whether we like it or not.
