The following is a list of current/former female Democratic governors/senators who could possibly be considered. Hillary Clinton would obviously also be a possibility if Obama wins the nomination.

Only room for 10 so if you want to vote for one of the other two, please do so below (or anyone else you think might be a possibility).

- -
LA Gov. Kathleen Blanco, WA Gov. Chris Gregoire, AZ Gov. Janet Napolitano, KS Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, CA Sen. Barbara Boxer

LA Sen. Mary Landrieu, AR Sen. Blanche Lincoln, .. MO Sen. Claire McCaskill, ... WA Sen. Patty Murray, MI Sen. Debbie Stabenow

WA Sen. Maria Cantwell, MN Sen. Amy Klobuchar

5. A ticket America is not ready for.
Boxer is seen by mainstream America as an ultra-liberal figure. Not a good running mate for Obama. Either Sebelius or Napolitano.

Hell, I think Obama may be too liberal for mainstream America. Luckily, he's likeable and has the ability to bring in ideologically different voters.

24. I agree. People have an ideological image of her.
I picked Janet Napolitano. All our female Dem governors are great, though I'm not so hot on Kathleen Blanco - I don't think she handled Katrina as well as she could have (in political terms...but that's a long other thread).

9. She is originally from TX...
But of course one African-American is quite enough to blow certain people's minds, let alone two.

Criminy, it sure would be nice if we could just pick the best candidate without regard to sex or ethnic background. That's one thing I really like about Star Trek TNG.

14. I picked her because she was the first and only one to stand up in Congress after 9/11
and say "NO" to bombing the crap out of Afghanistan before we could determine who actually attacked us.

She was right. They were NOT Afghanis. 15 of the 9/11 attackers were from Saudi Arabia, and the others were from United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Egypt.

Blanco has no politcal future. she might not have been all to blame for Louisiana going to hell after Katrina (Brownie/Bushie, you're doing a heck of a job), but she showed no leadership during that time. That is bad in an executive.

Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 01:30 AM by FlyingSquirrel
(Got them all off Wikipedia) The four governors are all "Action" photos. ALL the senators EXCEPT the two from WA have the American Flag in their background. I know from having visited their websites before that the pics of Cantwell and Murray are their official photos. Interesting huh?

My state is not big on patriotic crap, we know what patriotism is and it has nothing to do with the flag. (Either that or we're just a bit more casual than most folks)

32. It's just background info. You're joking about the ageism right?
Some people might think 48 would be too young for the position. I don't think that or I wouldn't have included them.

I didn't exactly want to throw in a laundry list of qualifications. People can look stuff up themselves if they're really interested. If you know of some other female governors/senators of any age that you feel should be considered, by all means add them below.

That said, I think when Arnold terms out as governor he'll run for US senate. I might even consider supporting (- hold on while I get into my flame suit - because I think he's been a pretty good governor. Most 'pubs really don't care for him and see him as a sellout. Arnold will naturally back McCain inthe GE because he pretty much has to, but he'd work with Obama in a second, I think they have a lot in common despite appearances.

79. Actually...
there are other states without a Governor's Mansion.

I Mass, there has been talk of turning James Michael Curley's home into the official residence, but nothing ever came of it. It hasn't been a big issue in recent years. Deval Patrick, Mitt Romney, Bill Weld, Michael Dukakis, and Ed King all lived within ten miles of the State House. The only time it became an issue was during Jane Swift's administration. Swift lives closer to Albany than to Boston.

NH has a "governor's mansion", but it has been decades since anyone has lived there. Bridges House is used for official receptions, but it is hardly an elegant mansion.

37. Why Are You Citing Ages?
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 02:06 AM by Raejeanowl
Other than ascertaining they meet constitutional requirements for minimum age, why is the age relevant?

And for that matter, why are you concentrating on choices between females as VP? To offer female VP alternatives to Clinton? I thought this was supposed to be about the most qualified person for the job.

the minimum requirement is 35, but you want a blend of maturity and experience, while still being young enough to run after Obama retires if he is lucky enough to win and then hold the WH.

Was just looking through Wikipedia for Democratic female governors / senators. I'm sure I missed a few. And of course it doesn't necessarily have to be a governor or senator, but those are the ones people look to first. (And there are so few of them that it's easy to look them up)

68. Everybody likes Boxer
Wondering whether this is realistic choice or "feel good".

70. Boxer is a fighter, a champion and a great senator!
This is not only about 'feel good' but also because she 'gets it'.

Boxer would be my number 1 choice. She rocks!

66. You've been lurking for over 3 years to make that comment?

:puke: Oh wait I get it, you came for the fun last election and you're back early for this one. Welcome back. :eyes:

Also this thread is NOT making the express assumption that Hillary won't win the nomination, and IS making the assumption that she would otherwise be under consideration for the VP slot (if you had read the entire OP).

You're talking about MI's governor Jennifer Granholm.

73. No Senators
We need them all too badly where they are. If Obama is the candidate, that includes HRC.

I voted for Sibelius in the poll, but Gregoire and Napolitano both have some appeal. That's only on geography and general knowledge of their records--I would want to see how they've done in public engagements too, obviously.

77. To Not Have Included Hillary In ANY Of The 3, When She's The BEST Choice, Is Pathetic.
Seriously. 3 polls, tons of choices, not once Hillary, even though an Obama/Hillary combination is what the OVERWHELMING amount of Democrats would want, and would be a GUARANTEED victory.

Pathetic.

83. The reason I did not include her is the same reason I did not include Obama
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 10:40 PM by FlyingSquirrel
I believe both are obvious choices and did not want to offend either camp by assuming their candidate would lose for purposes of these polls. Since I have two female US senators and a female governor in my state, I see no reason why there could not be a ticket with two female candidates on it. Maybe that's just me.

82. My God! I can't believe I am seeing this!!!!!
Amazing! Obama supporters actually praising women for a change instead of smearing them!

Hope none of those women are subject to "low periods".
