Clinton to Focus on Poverty (OHIO).
Ahead of Ohio Primary
By AMY CHOZICK
February 28, 2008; Page A6

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- With less than a week until Ohio holds its Democratic primary contest, Sen. Hillary Clinton is traveling to the poorest parts of the state in an effort to highlight her poverty agenda and draw in low-income voters.

Today, in the town of Hanging Rock, in the state's southeast, Sen. Clinton will for the first time devote an entire campaign event to poverty. She is expected to lay out plans that include giving impoverished new parents support and training to promote healthy child development, increasing access to early education and universal prekindergarten. She is also advocating for adoption of abused and neglected children and a further rise in the minimum wage, which will increase to $7.25 an hour next year and to $9.50 by 2011.

Poverty hasn't been a dominant issue in the campaign since the withdrawal of former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. Mr. Edwards hasn't endorsed a candidate, and both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama have been courting his supporters. "He made poverty a centerpiece in his campaign, and it needs to be a priority," Sen. Clinton has said of Mr. Edwards.

The candidate who best connects with the poor could have an edge in the Ohio contest on Tuesday. Parts of the state have poverty rates as high as 27%, according to the 2000 Census. The state is poorer than the national average, and Cleveland is the nation's poorest large city, with nearly half its children living in poverty.

Clinton to unveil plan to end Child Poverty
……- Feb 28th, 2008 at 8:28 am EST

Any parent or those concerned for our nations future will appreciate this. A detailed plan to help the children.

HANGING ROCK, Ohio - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton is offering a plan to improve childhood nutrition and setting a goal to reduce by half the 12 million youngsters living in poverty over the next dozen years.

A package of proposals, to be unveiled Thursday, includes a "comprehensive" early education initiative that starts with nurse's visits for pregnant women, lets children begin the Head Start program earlier and calls for universal pre-kindergarten programs.
…………

She was to spell out her proposals in a speech at the child care development center on Ohio University's southern campus.

……………
Clinton said she would direct her agriculture secretary to develop a plan to end childhood hunger. The nutrition effort would come largely through signing up more people for the food stamp program and expanding its benefits.

School breakfast programs would be universal in low-income neighborhoods under her proposal. She also would double the size of a summer nutrition program aimed at feeding low-income children when they aren't in school.

…………..

In addition, Clinton was calling for stronger programs aimed at cutting teen pregnancy as well as toughening child support enforcement programs to "support responsible fatherhood."

Clinton argues that roughly 12.9 million children live in poverty, with about 5 million living in extreme poverty. That means their families have incomes of less than half the federal poverty level.

……….
"While we celebrate America as a place where an individual's circumstances at birth should not determine his or her life chances, the fact is that economic mobility is now in decline in America," Clinton's background documents say. "Children born in poverty are likely to live in poverty their whole lives."

The effort to provide nursing care for pregnant women builds on a program she shaped as first lady of Arkansas, a program she said has been a dramatic success………

18. some of that is nice to see, but too little too late IMO
Why wasn't she ready to lead on this from DAY ONE of her campaign? Why does it need to be so kid-centric? Working poor adults without children are still invisible it seems.

Finally, how is it paid for? She is committed to 'fiscal responsibility' and 'universal health insurance' so is there really enough money for this given the $400 billion deficit we have now? She opened her campaign with fiscal responsibility. When push comes to shove, it will be childhood poverty that gets thrown under the bus. Just like it did with Bill and SCHIP.

I hope there is a full push to get rid of junk food in the school system, though I'd glad too see a call for it in terms of meal assistance.

Clinton raises $35 million in 1 month

By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Rebounding from weak fundraising in January, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to raise $35 million in February, a figure rival Sen. Barack Obama's campaign said it would surpass.

The $35 million would be Clinton's biggest fundraising mark yet and represents a remarkable recovery for her campaign….

Clinton officials, including campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe announced the totals in a conference call with contributors. The campaign announced that it had raised the money from 300,000 donors, including 200,000 new contributors, most of them donating through the Internet. Aides said almost all the money was for the primary election.

30. I honestly don't mean to knock this.
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 04:27 PM by Forkboy
But after growing up dirt poor and seeing it still running rampant even after a lot of lip service form nearly every candidate I've ever seen I have little faith that it CAN be ended. I give her credit for talking about it though...maybe, just maybe, someone will mean it one day.

K&R despite my pessimism.

31. Bill in Athens for Hillary--speaking of her accomplishments:

http://athensnews.com/news/election/2008/feb/28/clinton-supporters-and-the-curious/

By Alexandra Hazlett
Athens NEWS Campus Reporter
February 28, 2008

Former President Bill Clinton spoke to a packed Athens Community Center Monday afternoon, highlighting his wife’s experience and programs for Iraq and education, in what has become a do-or-die state for the Hillary Clinton campaign.

“It’s come down to this – it’s come down to Ohio and Texas,” President Clinton acknowledged to the crowd.

The line to get into the center stretched around the building and nearby parking lot, out to East State Street, and many were turned away once the building reached capacity. The earliest arrival was Sandy Griffiths of Wellston, Ohio, who arrived at 9 Monday morning.

“I like what she stands for,” Griffiths said, explaining that she supports Sen. Clinton for her health-care plans and focus on senior citizens.

……….

Walking down the line of shivering people waiting to be allowed into the Community Center gymnasium, comments from supporters of both candidates echoed the demographic lines each has most strongly held. Senior citizens, especially women, were the staunchest supporters of Hillary Clinton, while younger constituents and students mainly threw their weight behind Sen. Obama. These preferences also appeared to hold strong when people were asked whether they would consider supporting Sen. Obama if he eventually wins the party’s nomination.

…………

Calling his wife “the clear choice” President Clinton rattled off a familiar list of reasons voters should support her. He said that she would make a great commander-in-chief as well as a great “diplomat-in-chief,” a role that is increasingly important in today’s tense climate. She intends to disengage troops from Iraq as quickly and safely as possible and to become more involved in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, her husband said.

Additionally, he cited Hillary’s work as First Lady advocating against female genital mutilation in Senegal, for women’s rights in Cambodia, and in behalf of the Irish peace process. He mentioned Hillary Clinton’s support for health benefits of Ohio National Guard members to be equal to that of regular Army recruits as well. This, like her vote for legislation to give body armor to troops, was used to highlight her ethics and moral compass.

“That’s what you hire president to do – stand up for what is right,” President Clinton said.

On domestic issues, as has been the norm, removing the federal No Child Left Behind Act drew the most applause. The former First Lady’s plans for making college affordable by increasing Pell Grants, allowing students to pay off their loans over time, and making public-service jobs count as a form of payment in kind also resonated with the audience.

Another defection, this one to Clinton's camp
by Christi Parsons

Okay, we said we wouldn't tell you every time there was another Democratic defection.

But it seems worth noting that supporters aren't just flipping from supporting Hillary Clinton to backing Barack Obama.

Today, the Clinton campaign announced that El Paso County Commissioner and former Barack Obama supporter Veronica Escobar has switched her support to Clinton.

According to a release from the Clinton camp:

The announcement follows a Latino Decisions Texas Poll that shows Hillary Clinton leading Barack Obama by 62% to 21% among registered Hispanic voters in Texas.

“While I initially liked Barack Obama," Escobar says in the release, "I am supporting Hillary Clinton because it is clear that she is the one candidate who will truly fight for our communities as president."

Clearly, this fight is still on.
