Hillary raised $35 Million in February...Obama campaign says They've Raised "Considerably More."
Clinton raises $35 million in February

Hillary Clinton's camapign is set to announce later today that she's on track to raise roughly $35 million in the month of February, a huge month by any standard measure of political fundraising and her best of the campaign.

A Clinton advisor confirmed the figure, which is enough to suggest that money won't be an obstacle to Clinton's campaign going forward — though Clinton is still being heavily outspent by Barack Obama and his labor allies in Texas and Ohio. The surge has been fueled largely online contributions that Clinton has said are coming in to the tune of $1 million a day.

Obama raises "considerably more" than $35 million

Obama spokesman Bill Burton, anticipating the Clinton campaign's announcement that she has raised roughly $35 million this month, tells me that the Illinois senator has raised "considerably more than that" in the same period.

Obama has claimed more than 1 million donors this year alone, and raised $36 million last month, with much of it coming through his website.

14. I know.
After reading these numbers month after month, a million here and million there, it's starting to amount to real money. I hope Hillary comes to her senses after Tuesday, or we'll tap out small dem donors even before the general.

16. Hillary is just wasting her time and our money
By making Obama continue to spend money he could otherwise use in the GE to get a dem in the WH. But that wouldn't massage her ego now would it?

2. I assume some of Hillary's 35mil came from fat cat fundraisers? How much from small donors?

30. Wonder how her small donors will feel when the Clintons' release their tax returns. There's a reason
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 05:16 PM by flpoljunkie
why they are refusing to do so--unless she wins the nomination. If you can loan your campaign $5 million without breaking a sweat, you are very well off indeed.

3. OK, I don't care who your candidate is - this is obscene
I thought we were trying to get money OUT of politics. As long as it costs this much just to run for office, we are in trouble.

We need to get public financing in place NOW. This fundraising bonanza on both Clinton and Obama's part helped sink Edwards' campaign, IMHO. We are in a recession. It's crazy.

6. Small donor contributions are NOT the problem
and the SC has unfortunately ruled that money is speech. This is not going to change anytime soon.

11. Small donors may be the solution in light of the Supreme Court's stance
If we can get to a point where campaigns are fueled by average folks that will diminish the influence of special interests,

7. You're right, but
I think it is impressive how Obama (and now Clinton too) has raised so much of his money from small donors. I'd rather have a president who is beholden to a million activists than a few thousand corporate lobbyists. But I agree that the amounts of money being raised and spent are obscene.

8. Yeah, I get that. But it opens the door for corporate contributions
when candidates need that much money.

26. These sums are just appalling in light of the fact that our schools
can't pay teachers or improve their facilities, our infrastructure is beyond decay (bridges are collapsing, guys!), people are dying because they don't have health care...need I go on????

The fact that this money mostly ends up in the pockets of media mongrels (advertising) or useless "consultants" is mind-boggling to me!

This is simply WRONG! It is the single biggest reason why I really hold back and carefully select the candidates I contribute to--sometimes I think the money is best spent elsewhere--like a donation to a food pantry or a homeless shelter!

Our economy is tanking right now. Where are these obscene amounts of money coming from? People can't pay for their mortgages! Good grief!

20. I wish it were March 20th
So we could compare how much raised with how much spent/owed.

Clinton went into February with $29 million COH (but only about $9 million was primary dollars) and $7.6 million in debt not including the $5 million loan to her campaign (plus interest to be paid back to her). (much of that debt going all the way back to the Iowa contest)

Obama went into February with $24 million COH (with about $20 million available for the primary) and $1.1 million in debt.

A big banner of 'WE RAISED XX AMOUNT OF DOLLARS' really doesn't tell the financial story of a campaign.

25. I think the number may approach $70 Million
based on the following

Ath the end of January the nuber of donors for the year was about 256,000 donors. The number for the year now is now 901,525. That is a whopping 645,000 donors in February

Obama said the other night that the average donation is about $109. That is $70 Million.

27. "a remarkable recovery for her campaign." yes indeed.

The $35 million would be Clinton's biggest fundraising mark yet and represents a remarkable recovery for her campaign.

28. Ah but what Ben misses but his reader's get:
Average contribution in January was $142.85... $36M / 252,000 donations

based upon those numbers, they are at $66 million for this month at $109 per donation on average (as stated at the debate) and subtracting the January number of donors from the total number of donors this year.
