Thank you, Hillary, for your latest fear-mongering attack ad
Just like Bill in the 90s, she steals yet another Republican tactic and makes it her own. In the process, she's giving Obama a golden opportunity to deftly defuse a key bomb in the Repuke arsenal.

Not that you need my help, but could you please go after his flag lapel pins next? We really need that issue off the table by fall. Thanks.

By the time McCain gets a crack at him, the Repugs will only be able to make fun of his ears -- assuming Mark Penn isn't cooking up an ear-based attack ad as we speak. "Is America ready for a jug-eared President? Vote Hillary Clinton -- her normal-sized ears are ready on day one."

There is something in social psychology called "attitude inoculation." Hillary is giving independents small doses of the GOP slime machine. It could work as a vaccine.

She's our Huckabee..... only with the very big difference in that she'll continue to play dirty and attack, while Huckabee hasn't attacked McCain.

It's fun to hate Hillary. Fun to make up things about her to dislike, to call her names, and to resent her every breath and ascribe a satanic purpose to her every action.

It's fun. Remember when we did it to Saddam? And we got what we deserved for our nasty-tempers and willingness to believe the worst about someone without proof -- this lovely war. (It wasn't the Congress who sent us to Iraq; it was the misled American public and the misleading American press -- all hopped up on hate.

It's the same imagery and pushes the same buttons as home alarm system ads: look at your precious little white girl sleeping peacefully. If you don't buy our alarm/vote for me, you're at the mercy of some scary black man.

Not saying that it was intended, but for those seeing sexism everywhere, this is at least as plausible.

34. What is the problem?
I really find it bizarre that so many people are up in arms about this ad. Its an ad!!! Her perceived strength is being "ready at day 1", and she's emphasizing it in the ad. Just how naive are you people? This is crunch time. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent. She could be throwing all sorts of mud in ads, but I haven't seen it thus far. This is just a relatively mild commercial emphasizing that someday a president is going to get "that call" in the middle of the night, and Hillary thinks she's the best person to answer it.

Can we all stop being a little less outraged over everyday politics. And take a history lesson.....campaigns were MUCH MUCH more brutal 100 or even 200 years ago.

45. Here's a history lesson for you.
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days."

Franklin D. Roosevelt, Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933

Read and listen to the entire address. Maybe you'll learn something.

You say "She's doing what she thinks she has to do to win."

If all she's got is the exact same message that the current mis-administration has been running on for the past 7 years, that the entire Democratic base is sick and tired of... and you are unable to see why people are calling her on it?

Politics is about winning, not about playing nice.

If you can't win an election on your merits, then you have no business running.

63. Only one problem with that
Its real nice to say you don't use the Karl Rove playbook......but it works. Distasteful as it is, it works. So its real noble to say that if you can't win an election on your merits you shouldn't play, but she's in the race, and in the race to win. If she doesn't think she can win on the merits, then she should pack it in and go back home.

This is politics. This is how the game is played whether you like it or not. You do NOT play to be nice, you play to win. If you aren't willing to do what it takes to win, quite frankly, you won't win.

66. I see a bigger picture
The problem is the incredible hubris of the Clinton campaign. When they began, she was the clear front runner. They never dreamed that there would be a credible democratic alternative - and they were wrong. Now they are still acting as if she is the only credible democratic candidate, and to hell with what the real world is saying. And so, in order to shore up the failing dikes of her candidacy, she attempts to tear down, through the use of the 'fear card', Obama's run.

Unfortunately, we're already seeing the results of that. The republicans are copying her memes, and employing them against Obama as well. And so the rising tides not only threaten her failing campaign, but have the opportunity to begin eroding Obama's as well in the general election.

This is just one of the problems with playing the politics of fear. As we have seen so many times during the Bush mis-administration, blowback can be a real bitch. And the more that her campaign uses tactics that can't measurably help her, but only lower the standards of discourse being waged in this war of words, the more she is failing this country.

I have always greatly respected and admired Hillary - we have her autobiography in our personal library. But these tactics demean our country, as well as lower my respect.

I have tried to live my life by taking the high road, and that has served me (IMHO) well. Perhaps it is a personal fault to wish that the leaders of my country do the same.

52. this thread shows what's wrong with the Obama camp, outrage at every little turn of the event in a
campaign year, like He's above reproach for anything. This ad is not slinging mud at him, it's just making a point about one of her strenghths (that she's running on).

Furthermore, any talk about how this is a RW attack method or whatever continues to illustrate how behind many Dems are on how you win an election. I'm sorry but politics is not about playing nice, it's a bloodsport of sorts and this is the one thing Dems would do better to understand. If you can't take a little heat, and it IS a little heat now, how are you going to handle it if he the nom. in the GE with the GOP attack machine at full force???

and all the comments about ears? One of the reasons we know this is going on is because of the internet and 24/7 "news" shows.
