Fact Check: Democrats Take McCain's Remark on Iraq Out of Context

Staff

No, John McCain is not proposing a 100-year war in Iraq.

The future Republican presidential nominee and the Democrats vying to run against him in the fall are engaged in a debate of sorts over how long U.S. troops should stay in Iraq and under what circumstances.

That's a genuine point of contention. But Hillary Rodham Clinton and especially Barack Obama have distilled McCain's position into sound bite oversimplifications, suggesting he foresees a war without end in anyone's lifetime.

THE SPIN:

1. He wants bases there like we have in Germany and Korea...
...which is a horrible idea. We left Germany and S. Koreans as friends--most of the Middle East still hates us.

2. If he thinks we should stay in Iraq, then yes, he wants 100 years of
whatever the fuck it is we're doing now. Sorry, Grampa, you said it.

3. My friends, when I make a statement that doesn't mean
I actually mean what I stated. In other words when I state something, no one should take that as meaning anything till I have time to see which way the wind is blowing at the time. So in the future when I say i would like to be in Iraq for 100 years that doesn't mean I would like to be in Iraq for 100 years, that means I would like you and your kids to be in Iraq for 100 years, see.

4. And by the way: Why is this an "objective" AP story, to help McCain?
Why is the press now trying to make it acceptable to the American public that we stay in Iraq indefinitely? Why is it now the job of the press to convince the public of what McCain is trying to say? I smell bullshit.
