Words I can do DU without.
I hate the word "Hil-bot". No real Democrat would use such a phrase. People who support Clinton disagree with me on who our candidate should be, that doesn't make them brain dead. If you can't tolerate different opinions, you're no liberal; you're just a bigot who happens to be left of center.

I'm sure there's other words being tossed around this forum I hate, but that's the one getting my goat right now.

3. Thanks. I'm offended by a lot of the words used by anti-Obama people.
I've chosen to support Hillary over Obama, but that doesn't mean that I agree with people using rude names to describe those who support Obama.

Now, if a poster deserves to be called rude names on the basis of their rude posting history, that's an entirely different matter. But we should leave the names of the candidates out of that.

6. I can give you a whole list.
All of the derogatory/dismissive terms used for either of the candidates (example: Shrillary, Empty Suit).

All of the derogatory/dismissive terms used to describe either candidate's supporters (example: Hillbot, Obamaton).

But then I also hate all the terms used around her for republicans (example: rethugs, repugs).

This kind of name-calling is indicative of either low age or low IQ or low self-esteem.

And yes, as you say, it represents left of center bigots.

Not very progressive.

7. Thank you. That's what I was looking for.... other examples of pointless rhetoric
And yes, "rethugs" is a perfect example of people misdirecting their scorn. Making up schoolyard taunts is not the same as fighting back. A couple of years ago on DU, I used the phrase "rethuglinazis" as a way of making fun of the over the top idiocy of people who think hysterical name calling is effective.

A couple of days after that, I saw a post where someone sincerely used this same word to complain about how immature Republicans are! :) I at least got to enjoy the irony.

10. Thank you for your OP. It needed to be said.
And it would be great if supporters of both candidates could add to the list and we would all agree to avoid these terms in order to have a civil conversation.

I really wish there was a mandate here that dictated that posts containing such name revisions like that would be deleted.

23. Laying down and enforcing rules of courtesy is not censorship
I don't approve of the deflation of the term censorship. For a number of reasons, me griping about intolerant speech is not censorship. First off, I'm not talking about stifling an idea. Second off, I'm not even talking about stifling a word--I've only said I don't like it.

Thirdly, even if I was proposing some kind of enforcement of decorum on this board (which I'm not) it wouldn't be censorship because this is discussion board fully owned and operated by private parties--not me and certainly not the people who call fellow Democrats "Hill-bots." They can allow anyone they like to communicate anything they choose or disallow anyone they dislike. It's all happening on their bandwidth on their dime.

Censorship is preventing someone from speaking or writing, not laying down rules about any particular place.

31. Well, What About The Rules?
We've already agreed to the rules regarding ad hominem attacks, you know, the parts where you can't call a jerk a jerk, a moron a moron, or a liar a liar rather than criticize substance or facts of the post. If I'm not mistaken, you're also not supposed to call someone a "troll" or say derogatory or insinuating things about newcomers with low post counts, not that it doesn't happen all the time. These are areas of censorship we accept as a condition of our membership.

I don't like the candidate name-calling, either, and I know I've been guilty of it myself in anger and annoyance. More than once, I'm sure.

But here's the pivotal question for me: Should we ask for a formal restriction in place that only applies to Democrats and/or Democratic candidates? And I have to say "no," although I'd love to silence those who have nothing better to contribute than the constant, juvenile snark.

15. How about the ones straight from the Republican playbook?
Billary, Hillarycare, etc.

Used right here on DU. And the posters think they're being clever!

I don't like Obamatons or cultists, either.

Stupid or nasty, though, are sometimes appropriate.

18. Ok, I admit I used Hillbot
But it was the day "the cult" meme was at its worst. I'M NOT MADE OF STONE!!! Cut me and I bleed

If I was a bigot for a day I concede the point. I'm usually a nice guy though. Well, if you can get past my acerbic sense of humor and deeply ingrained cynicism about pretty much everything.

24. Cyncism is *earned*. If you act like you lack experience in life it's not 'cynical', it's bratty
But I'll spare you the lecture on the differences between "acerbic" and "simply childish".
