Why Popeye's Chicken is not a race issue..
Popeye's Chicken is hands down the best fried chicken in the world.

It is NOT good for you. It is batter-covered, skin-on, deep fried chicken and it is delicious.

You can get it spicy or mild, dark or white. Or a mixture of all of these.

Popeye's chicken always comes with biscuits and a choice of sides. The biscuits are baked with a slathering of butter on top. The most popular sides are mashed potatoes and gravy, dirty rice and cole slaw. You can get corn on the cob, but nobody really does.

A big box of Popeye's chicken with 12 biscuits and 3 large sides costs less than $20 and it will feed eight people. There will be no leftovers.

Popeye's chicken was started by a white guy who became extremely rich and had a big public fight with Ann Rice (the vampire series author) in New Orleans which was really funny. He has the biggest, most ostentatious display of Christmas lights in all of New Orleans and has had lawsuits filed against him because of it.

Any Popeye's Chicken place you go into in New Orleans will have a line of people of all colors cheerfully waiting to order their food. Most will be drooling in anticipation.

You may see a Popeye's Chicken outside of southern Louisiana, but it will not be good. Do not waste your time or money, just head to New Orleans.

I just had to say this because I fucking love Popeye's Chicken and I hate to see it slandered.

14. I agree with him. Eating & exercise patterns are directly related to the current healthcare crisis.
It amazes me that so little emphasis is put on American's lifestyles.

I saw this man on TV...segment of 60 Minutes or Dateline or something --- about an insurance nightmare. He is over 60, had a heart attack, but must still work (he's an optometrist or something in a clinic) for the sole purpose of getting insurance, until he qualifies for Medicare. Because he had a heart attack previously, he cannot buy insurance on his own. So he must work, even though he's sickly, and even though it adds to his bad health condition. It's a Catch 22. He is uninsurable, so must work to get insurance, and the work in turn makes him sicker and require the insurance even more.

BUT, I was wondering throughout the whole story, what this man was doing on his own to get healthy. He was VERY overweight and he didn't mention any healthy habits (like eating right, walking daily) he was doing to aid his bad health.

Part of the story, I thought, was that he himself partly CAUSED the problem that he was now complaining of. Yet that part isn't mentioned at all. It should be.

The two main chronic conditions in America are diabetes and something else - both of which are CAUSED by unhealthy lifestyles and are totally preventable. This should be discussed more!

it is a staple of the culture. Everything can be done in moderation and we sure as hell don't need commander obama of the food police telling people what they should and should NOT eat. This is just another example of this guys arrogance and conceit.

107. Yes ... Way too expensive
I recently went to Popeye's for the first time (because I had a coupon card).

I have a coupon card that gets me a 2 piece meal FREE, with the purchase of a 2 piece meal.
I ended up paying $7 (without drinks).
The chicken was tasty, but the side (Cajun Rice) was disgusting.
After I finished my meal, I made myself a sandwich because I was still hungry.

I will never go there again. Even at half price I felt I was ripped off.

Cheers
Drifter

4. I'm from Louisiana. Popeye's rocks! Now I'm in TX, and it's here, too! And it's great here, too!
Not as spicy as I like (these sissy Texans can't take the spices), but still great! Heart attack in a meal, but it's delicious.

You wanna get obese and die young? Then eat Popeye's every day for a year. That'll do it.

When visiting relatives in La., I ALWAYS swing by the local Popeye's and pick up the family size box of extra crispy & spicy. Mmmmmmm, Mmmmmm.

Eating friend chicken 7 days a week isn't going to achieve that. Feeding kids friend chicken every day isn't good for them. As a parent, one has a responsibility to feed ones' children a balanced nutritious diet.

I'm all for Obama's remarks (and they seemed to go down pretty well with the audience) because people have to exercise some responsibility for their own lifestyles as well. I'm not saying you should never eat fried chicken. Hell, I'm enjoying a beer right now. On the other hand, if I drank five pints a day I'd be pretty much asking for liver trouble, no?

27. The problem with Fried food is that it can kill.........
and Black People have a higher rate of both children and adult diabetes per capita.
so this issue, to a great degree, is a matter of life and death. :(

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.

Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don’t know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 – 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease
http://www.buydominica.com/naturalhealth/diabetesafricaamerican.php

Today, diabetes mellitus is one of the most serious health challenges facing the more than 30 million African Americans. The following statistics illustrate the magnitude of this disease among African Americans.
http://www.blackhealthcare.com/BHC/Diabetes/Description.asp

BlackHealthCare.com

Blackhealthcare.com is a culturally oriented and ethnically focused comprehensive internet-based health and medical information provider dedicated to addressing the special health problems of African-Americans. The state of health for African-Americans is especially precarious. Chronic disease has an excessive impact on minority populations. Consider these facts:

The prevalence of diabetes among African Americans is about 70% higher than among white Americans.

But being overweight, having high blood pressure and high cholesterol together is called Metabolic Syndrome, and that leads to type2 diabetes, as well as heart attack and stroke....

All of which is caused by the gallons of coke, and tons of fast food we all eat. I'm an uptight relatively thin white guy with two out of three of the markers - bp and cholesterol......

But I will, on occasion have some of that chicken.

A man's gotta eat....

43. And I am here to dispel that slur.
It is an ignorant slur that needs to die.

And sometimes humor is the best weapon.

No offense intended.

50. It's good if the stereotype/slur is finally dying off
I just got so used to the notion that it was a slur that I bristle if I see it used by anyone, no matter what their race/ethnicity.

62. Jeebus, need a valium?
I was replying politely to someone else. I wasn't the one who thought that fried chicken had anything to do with anything. The only reason I avoided the association is because I'd been told that others used it to deride black people. But fucking pardon me for trying to be sensitive to the feelings of others.

And if you think some 20th century crap needs to be crushed try telling Obama to get off the stick about GLBT rights and his homophobic friends.

The issues are serious and I could not be more with you about the GLBT issue.

I am truly sorry if I offended you.

57. Popeye's chicken is better than KFC X 100. KFC is just gross.
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is cruel and mean to their chickens! When you eat KFC chicken, you are eating cruelty.
This is a documented fact. Undercover videos have shown their abusive practices toward chickens.

Popeye's has some damn tasty chicken & biscuits!

79. My worst Popeye's experience.
Almost five years ago, I left work in midtown Manhattan with a specific agenda of three stops I had to make.

1. Get some cash for an impending out-of-town trip.
2. Get some Popeye’s extra spicy chicken.
3. Get some beer.

I felt like an open hedonist on the subway to Queens with that seductive smell spewing out of the plastic carry out bag. No matter how many twists I made to the bag, I could not contain it. People knew. And then I realized that they knew because they were envious. I just accepted that I probably made the best stop of anybody in the car before I got on.

I don’t remember the brand of the beer I picked up when I got off at my stop. There are a couple reasons. Most of all, what can compete with Popeye’s in a gastronomic remembrance? Oh, and then I was mugged by two guys that snuck up behind at the entrance to my apartment building.

One guy behind me had me in a choke hold with a knife to my throat while the other went through my pockets and my bag. I pleaded with them not to take my bag because it had a zip disk with the final approved scripts I needed for my out-of-town shoot. And then I came to my senses. “Please don’t hurt me. I don’t have health insurance.”

Thankfully, they didn’t take my cards. They didn’t take my cigs. OK, I smoke Carltons. Only a serious addict would turn down a pack of Carltons. They got my $200 cash advance, but left me with my smokes, cards, beer, Popeye’s and my life. However, by the time I got up to my apartment I had not yet seen it from that perspective. I dropped everything and called the police.

I spent the next three hours or so cruising the neighborhood and going through mug shots. By the time I got home the beer was warm, the chicken was cold and I was out $200.

It was not my best Popeye’s experience, but somehow I made it work for me when I finally got around to it.

In short, I loves the Popeye’s extra spicy.

84. Did I blame the Popeye's? I don't think so.
It was just not my best experience.

Seriously, I'm glad you enjoyed my remembrance and some of my after the fact chuckles. Thanks for saying.

Life is too weird. (It really happened to me.) And I sincerely thank Jesus, God and mostly the Popeyes's former midtown franchise for the extra spicy chicken that I couldn't enjoy as much as I anticipated. And yet, it still soothed me. Truth be told, I was hungry when I finally got back from the police station.

Glad it made you laugh.

Had me laughing helplessly! Until I clicked on and read the post, I thought someone was actually being serious (which made it even more funny). Hey, this is GDP, after all, so it's not unlikely that someone WAS being serious!

Thanks for the bellylaugh! I needed it tonight!

Oh, and I love Popeyes...not the dirty rice, tho, 'cause I hate liver. Their mashed potatoes and gravy are pretty good.

Northeast Philadelphia ( Far Northeast ) and that joint has been there for many years successfully.....I've tried their chicken, and I must say it is awesome. I'm not a HUGE fan of fried chicken, but this stuff ( along with what you get with it ) is very good. Their portions are excellent.

Central Ohio has a few stores and we will go out of our way to get that spicy goodness! Fell in love with the taste when we lived out in Oklahoma(and traveled in the South).
We're low-carb eaters, so it's the biscuits we go easy on (but they are gooood!)

I love it and it is bad for you. It's a cajun style of chicken and they red beans and rice, etc. They don't have Popeye's restaurants in the northern part of the country. And it is very popular in Texas and hence the reference.
