Yesterday, in Texas, another Republican told me she was voting for the O-Man
Yesterday,

While at the Tom Thumb grocery store in Plano, on Coit and Campbell, I noticed a girl scout and her mother selling girl scout cookies. I was wearing my Obama pin, of course. Not wanting to miss the chance to support the girl scouts, I decided to buy some cookies for me and some Obama phone bankers. (because even though I like eating those cookies, I really am just helping out. :))

The mom saw my button and said, "I am voting, for the first time in my life, in the Democratic primary. And the reason is him (she pointed to my button.) The girl scout started shouting O - BA - MA and other shoppers gathered around and told me (like I am some official for Obama - which I am not!) how much they like Obama and how they are Republicans voting for him. Plano is teaming with Republicans and they have ruled us for so long. It's not like this is Austin.

So, Texans, wear your Obama SWAG proudly. It is a great way to bring a face to someone who really wants to vote for Obama and needs that final nudge. As we Texans know - we love to talk with folks - and we like to make personal connections for all things - including elections. Use your Texas charm to bring Texas home for Obama.

3. Yes, totally - It's about the War
She was telling me that she hates McCain and has been inundated with robo calls from him and Governor Perry. She said that someone from the Huckabee campaign made a personal call to her and it p.o.'d her. Her issue is the war and she knows some kids who were killed/injured and she can't take it anymore. She said that the Repubs want Clinton to be the winner b/c she is an easier target for their crap.

5. My *Very* Republican S-I-L
told me yesterday that she is seriously considering Obama if he gets the nom. This is somebody who voted for Reagan in her first election and who enthusiastically voted Bush in 2000 and not so enthusiastically in 2004 (don't change horses in mid-Apocalypse). She's banned me from talking politics any time the last 7 yrs. Yet yesterday she brought up, all on her own, that she really likes Obama, that she can't stand McCain, and would even consider voting for Sen. Clinton if she were the nominee.

Now, she spent ages denigrating everything the Clintons did, said, or stood for when they were in office so you can imagine that I was pretty well flabbergasted. Her husband, an investment guy, agrees with her and *he* used to tell me gloatingly that Republicans of any stripe were better for business than any Democrat. He's singing a different tune now, even though they are a long way from hurting, his business has frozen raises and bonuses this year. I'm pretty sure their change of heart is monetary rather than moral but I'll take what I can get!

6. What's an S-I-L
I love how Republicans don't care about any issue unless it personally affects them. The second they are hit in the wallet, feel bad about not giving their folks raises, etc. - then there is a problem. Like you said - I'll take their votes, you're darn right I will. And so would Clinton. That's how Bill won.

20. Do you want to win or do you want to be right?
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 02:05 PM by powergirl
The Clinton campaign strategy has been to bank on Obama to excite the electorate to vote for the Clinton/Obama ticket. What they didn't count on is Obama posing a threat to the top name on the ticket. Do they want Obama to keep it toned down for the general election in the event that Clinton wins the nominee? I think not. Are they going to shove all that enthusiasm back into a bottle? No. The candidates need to shine and win on what they have - not what they can take away from other candidates.

Presidential elections are not fair. I thought Edwards was the most qualified. You have to be qualified and have the "sun is in your face" during an election year when the planets are lined up just so. That time didn't come for Edwards and probably not for Sen. Clinton. It is Obama's time, he shines, the planets like it. Some people think it's not fair and it's not right. But the Fair is in October - as we like to say in Texas. I want to win more than I want to make a statement - however right it may be. If Obama can get people (of any stripe) to pull the lever for the Dems - we will support him. Sen. Clinton would love to boast bipartisan support. And she can't. You cannot convince me that more people voting for Obama than Clinton is a bad thing somehow. So, I ask you, Do you want to win and get those a-holes out of office or do you want to go on a wing and a prayer and try to be right. The answer is an easy one.

15. Yeah, they were all saying they were voting for Hillary to do the same thing
That's nothing but disinfo trying to take steam out of Obama's campaign. It simply isn't true.
Before Obama got legs, all the hate radio idiots were urging their people to vote for Hillary
because she'd be "so easy to beat". It's not true now, it wasn't true then.

What it is, is they need some tiny piece of hope that they're not about to be obliterated from
the political scene, so they lie to themselves with this nonsense.

16. So....
...ALL the Pubbies are LYING to their Dem families and friends? Where in the hell do you get off telling everyone that their good friends and family, people we have known for years, suddenly are lying to us? Who the fuck gave you some magic crystal ball that allows you not only to discern this...but to use it as a basis to slam our families and friends. Talk about stepping over the line...!!

IMO, you are totally full of it...and pathetic on top of all of that brown sludge which you spew all over DU.

JMHO

22. Yeah my mom is a liar
She has been a lifer Republican...not your religious fundy but the old school 1950's Republican. The Ike years, etc. SHe held her nose voting for Bush in 2000 and didn't vote in 2004. She recently switched parties to Dem and is voting for Obama.

Oh wait, she is lying to me, my father and herself. Secretly she is hiding in her own weird world and is going to pull the lever for the Republican. Of course, according to people who don't like that she (or I) am voting for Obama, I am also lying about this entire story.

28. My family have become academy award actors too.
If my conservative-leaning independent brother-in-law is lying as part of some conspiracy to elect the "weaker" Dem candidate, then he's got his wife, my liberal sister, convinced too. No wait... maybe he's converted my sister to the dark side and she's in on the conspiracy too!

19. Saying it doesn't make it so. And even if true, SO WHAT?
Plenty of Republicans and Independents are choosing to vote for Obama in the primary because they like him, so what does it matter if Obama gets a few misguided votes? Do you seriously think some aren't voting for Hillary thinking SHE is the weaker candidate?

24. Minor correction - That's considered Richardson, not Plano (m)
Plano is generally north of 190. Collin County starts a little north of the Campbell/Coit intersection, but the city of Plano doesn't start until 190. So, the north part of Richardson is in Collin County, not Dallas County. (I live in Richardson very close to that store but am in Collin County.)

:hi:

Good job! If you're hankering for more GS cookies, let me know and I can score you whatever you need.

25. You are correct about Richardson
I live in Plano and I go to that grocery store. I live on the border of Collin and Dallas County but I am in Collin county which we call the "South Africa" of Texas. But I've also seen many a Planoite have a conversion to Obama. I'll keep you in mind for the cookies! :)
