As a digital artist with about 15 years experience and at least 15 graphic software programs installed on my computer, this is nothing more than a JPEG that has been saved in a low level program like Paint Shop Pro which compresses the image, uses poor embedded RGB color as well as poor lighting and makes the color appear darker. Adobe Photoshop has a more correct RGB color embedded into the program, better lighting and does not compress images as much, thus you get a truer and lighter skin color. This applies even when an image has been resized maintaining the correct aspect ratio. Any one of the two photos used in Gimp will appear slightly different in color than using either of the above programs. Bottom line, the photo does not have to be altered in any way for the skin color to change due to compression, lighting, and RGB color of the graphics program. It needs only to be saved as a JPEG in that program.

re-read the post. It is all about how the program compresses the image. It is all about how many times the image itself has been upload to any server and if the image is remote linked to another server when you right click to save it. Each time something is done to a JPG image, it changes the compression and has nothing to do with changing the actual ratio of an image. This should be the first thing psp'ers should know about images.

There was a previous topic on the alteration of the video image. On the other topic I posted that I know enough about graphics to easily see that the image had been altered as to density and tonality. I'm glad someone at Kos actually measured and analysed the image. No way the heavy dark outlined lips, darker, denser hair and the increased definition around the nostrils could have happened accidentally, through repetition. No way, sad to say.

When someone presents an image that is supposed to have been manipulated, it is customary to include the original... not just something LIKE the original.

Since the "darkened" still offered has about twice the information as the first, it's not a very good comparison.

The first picture can not possibly be the source for the second picture... it is clearer and more detailed than the first picture!

So whatever claim is being made is false on its face. (Since the first picture cannot be the source of the second picture, what is even being alleged?)

On the larger issue, the second photo is no so much darker as it is DESATURATED. The color saturation is lower... it is closer to black and white and true contrast is easy to read without interference from the bright reds.

Almost all colors have a different absolute luminosity than their perceived luminosity. When you reduce the color in a picture some things seem lighter than they should be and some seem darker.

I am merely noting that color, contrast and value are all fragile, and more so in video than in stills. Any frame of video contains far less information than it looks like it contains. Persistence of vision, and all that.

I do this stuff for a living, and I would hate to be accused of racism every time I transfer something from PAL to NTSC, or from CMYK to RGB, etc., etc.

again, where did the tape from the debate come from?

it plays live on tv and is recorded, to vhs or dvd? Color is done in RGB depending on the adjustments of the tv it was recorded from and the format there are color shifts.

Then you add in the computer, what color correction software, if any is used, Is the computer color calibrated to the original tape? Doubt it, that is time consuming and they are turning around ads to fast.

133. It's sad, but I've also wondered about what the camera's really showing.

I first noticed something like that during Kansas Governor Katherine Sibelius' response to the State of the Union, this year.

It was being simulcast on about 5 different channels, and I was struck by the appallingly different camera views.

On some channels, the white balance in the cameras seemed to be all out of whack. Gov. Sibelius looked so pasty, wan and unhealthy, you kind of wondered how she had the energy to sit up straight, and talk, at the same time.

But on other channels, she looked like she had a normal, healthy glow, and quite a lot of charisma.

Flipping back and forth, concentrating on details in the background, it was pretty apparent that the pale, pasty governor was sitting in a badly color-balanced room. The wood paneling and furniture looked a lot more natural in the cameras where the governor looked good, too.

...That kind of things been going on forever, in newspapers, with editors choosing to run unflattering photographs of candidates they don't support. Rhodes scholar, ex-NBA player Bill Bradley looking dumpy, fat and dumb (or possibly, anaesthetized), during the 2000 primaries remains my all-time worst photo, but I've seen quite a few others.

DailyKos has the original scoop. I went and got the original footage from the Clinton ad, and then compared it to 3 different video clips of the same debate from 3 different sources. I did this so as to take into account any editing, or quality issues, that might have accounted for Obama having darker skin in any particular video. None of the 3 video sources I found showed Obama nearly as black as the Hillary ad does. Click the image above to see a larger version. Look at his lips. Look at his eyebrows. Look at how the red MSNBC background has turned more purple. Clearly the image was darkened. The question is "why."

It just keeps happening again and again and again. The Clintons keeps doing things, saying things, that sound awfully racist. And we're to believe that this, the - what? 8th, 10th time? - this has happened is again just a coincidence. The first half a dozen times you launch seemingly racist attacks on your black opponent, maybe - maybe - we can write it off as "boy you're really dumb not to get it." But having a seemingly-racist attack from the Clinton folks on Obama every single week, after a while, you don't get to play the "I had no idea!" card anymore. After that many times, you're race-baiting. You're using racism to win. And you're destroying your legacy and your husband's. Enough already.
