Barack voters out in Euclid, Cleveland
In Euclid, a city with a historic election of its own with the guarantee of the first black council member being elected, had a light but steady turnout this morning, but few people were talking about the local races.
Instead, many had hopes for a new president on their mind.
Voter Cheri Collier, 34, cast her ballot at Bethlehem Church in Euclid for Obama -- but stressed it was not only because of his race. She said she felt a connection with the candidate and said Obama was the only one talking about the poor.
"I'm more concerned with what is everbody going to get out of it," Collier said. "I think he will look at everyone in the same way."
Collier also said she preferred voting with a paper ballot this year in Cuyahoga County and said the computer screens in Lake County, where she voted last year, were a bit overwhelming.
In Cleveland, another voter also cast his ballot for Obama, but without as much conviction.
"I think they both talk pretty much the same -- there's no real difference," voter Willie Harrel said after casting his ballot around 8:30 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres High School at East 60th Street and St. Clair Avenue. "But I guess I'd prefer Obama to be president, so that's how I voted."
Harrel was among a dozen or so voters at the school. Each had to negotiate icy sidewalks as they left the polls. "It doesn't matter how bad the weather is, you've got to go out and vote," Harrel said.
