Ohio State Dem Chair: Hillary Needs Eight-Point Win In Both Ohio And Texas

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/

By Greg Sargent - March 4, 2008, 1:45PM

If this is an indication of what Dem party infrastructure types will be saying about Hillary and the general election after the dust settles from today's contests, she will need a major win in Texas and Ohio to avert pressure to get out of the race:

State Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern said Mrs. Clinton needs an 8-point victory margin in Ohio and Texas to remain in the race against Mr. Obama, who now has a lead of about 100 delegates and victories in the last 11 contests.

"She must, in my opinion, make that kind of show. It's not an either-or," Mr. Redfern said. "If we don't have a nominee sooner rather than later, it makes it increasingly difficult to defeat John McCain."

People like Redfern, the Ohio state chair, will only grow more vocal in the days ahead, obviously. So it's do or die -- now.

2. She wouldn't be in this mess if she had a 50 state strategy
But getting blown out in the small states, one after another, takes its toll. That means she has to win the larger states by big margins.

12. BINGO! That's why I don't want her in a position to appoint DNC chair
Howard Dean will be out as DNC chairman if she's the nominee (to be replaced by someone who, like HRC, believes in top-down leadership and big corporate donations). Her campaign has shown her contempt for small states and the grassroots, and her focus on just winning a 51% majority, not a governing mandate. Our nation is sick of leadership being IMPOSED from above; we want something that's bubbled up from among us ...

7. He's only saying what everyone knows.
I think he is generous with the 8% though. The way Ohio's delegates are given out, I don't think she will gain many unless she gets at least into the teens. She could win every Congressional district by 10 points and only gain 11 delegates.

8. I think it's more meaningful because he's from a swing state.
He's worrying about McCain the way folks from NY, say, might not be.

18. You know - you make a great point
maybe the people that don't understand what it is doing to the party have that view point because they are in a solidly red or solidly blue State.

In Ohio, I attended an ODP sponsored training session over a month ago - before Super Tuesday. We thought we would have a candidate by know. We need to organize early. We need to define our candidate early. We need to be united ASAP.

11. At some point, you have to ask "Why?"
If she only wins Ohio, she doesn't have a shot in hell at the nomination unless some unbelievable scenario takes place at the convention.

This isn't Mike Huckabee running some kind of weird side campaign to be President of Jesusland. She would just bringing unending pressure on the presumptive nominee for questionable gains.

I have no problem with Hillary staying in until this point. And if she wins TX and OH, she's won the right to move on even though I will find it annoying. But if she falls today, it's got to be considered a three-knockdown round.

14. Exactly. If she wins Texas or Ohio, I'm with you but ...
Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 02:32 PM by LSparkle
If she loses both (even if it's only 51-49), she's going to have a hard time convincing even her donors that there's a reason for her to stay in the race. My own fear is that she may recognize this but Bill won't ... They're BOTH going to have to decide to get out, and his recent behavior makes me worry that he'll want her to stay in this until (as he famous said) "the last dog dies." Not exactly a positive scenario for our party.

16. I wrote a few weeks ago that her only hope in hell was to go completely negative
And she has. She's called Obama everything but a white man over the last week. And it actually appears to be working.

Unfortunately, going this negative this late in a primary season ultimately hurts the party.

Again, if you look at McCain and Huckabee. Huckabee hasn't said boo towards McCain in weeks. He's really just a sparring partner at this point and someone to keep the Evangeicals engaged.

17. You're right -- mending Repug fences will be a breeze, compared ...
to what it's going to take to salve the bruises we're giving each other. I don't think Hillary's up to that challenge, nor does she realize how difficult it's going to be. It's not like she can just snap her fingers and we'll all fall in line behind her. She's taking a big chunk of the grassroots for granted ... I won't feel good voting for her and, in essense, rewarding her "bad behavior" (negative campaigning). Don't know what I'll do if she's the nominee in November.
