OH: Obama campaign cites incidents of voter suppression
Statement from Ohio State Director Paul Tewes

Our campaign’s goal today is to ensure that any registered voter in the state of Ohio can go to the polls and cast their ballot for their candidate of choice without interference. We understand that the Clinton campaign may want to depress turnout because Barack Obama has closed a 20-point gap over the course of this month as voters across the state got to know him.

It has been the hallmark of the Democratic party to educate and protect the rights of voters. If the Clinton campaign disagrees with that principle, they should say so today.

We have received reports from around the state of independents and Republicans who chose to vote in the Democratic primary receiving issue only or Republican ballots instead of the Democratic ballot they were entitled to. We have also had reports that the voter ID requirements have been misstated at various locations, causing some voters to be turned away.

We will take action when necessary to ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast their votes and to have their votes counted.

We will continue to monitor the polls to ensure that all Ohioans who choose to participate in today’s election are able to do so regardless of who they choose to vote for.

15. This impacts both campaigns - why are you laughing?
Seriously? Republicans & Independents are turning out in record numbers to vote for BOTH Obama & HRC. Sure they typically break for Obama, but OH might be a different story - and that SHOULD concern you. Come time for the GE, we'll be facing this same issue, regardless of who the candidate is. Therefore, we need to stay on top of this situation.

3. These would be actual cases of voter suppression.
As opposed to people claiming to be independents then wanting to vote for Clinton.

4. Some one reported on this earlier
It was my understanding that they gave the wrong info to the worker so they got the wrong ballots. Not sure though.

That's something worth whining about, as far as I know.

7. Why are they blaming this on the Clinton campaign?
Seems to me that if they have a problem with poll workers, then they should take it up with the secretary of state.

I'm used to seeing some Obama supporters blame everything on Hillary Clinton ("I stubbed my toe today! It's Hillary's fault!), but it's troubling to see a statement like this from Obama's State Director. Come on.

8. not really sure I understand this
Ohio has a closed primary and there is a cutoff date to change affiliation. This report is very incomplete and does not explain if these are people who made the deadline and are being turned away, or people who were unaware or didn't make the deadline.

more info is needed before I get outraged.

9. That isn't true. There is no deadline for declaring a party
the only way you declare is when you vote - you ask for a Dem, R or Issues Only ballot.

Let me repeat. There is not deadline.

Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 02:40 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Hillary controls this how now?

The fact they are blaming Hillary for this makes them look really, really stupid.

Shame on the Obama camp for trying to smear Hillary like that.

Interesting that your outrage is so consistently directed toward Obama when you claim that you support both of them. Shame on you for your spurious claim of impartiality. Hang it up.

2. No where in there are there comments from the Hillary campaign.

That link wasn't even close to what needed to be presented. Is that was Cali was talking about? If so, that's really quite funny!

Which would be the link I provided. AFAIK nobody is claiming voter suppression - just voter misinformation.

Now stop Bzzzztttting me - it tickles. :P

20. LOL At Your Finishing Line!!
No, I was actually complaining about how disingenuous and disgusting it was for his campaign to act like it's her fault somehow, and then also imply that she would want to disenfranchise voters. I really did find that smear to be quite disgusting.

Having that said:

Bzzzzzzttttt hehehe. Bzzzzzzzttttt hehehe. Bzzzzzzzttttt hehehe. :)

Just reading Tewes statement - he throws a little mud at Clinton but never actually accuses the campaign of voter suppression. I wouldn't blink if Wolfson said the same thing. That kind of talk is expected on election day.

Now really, stop it, I about peed my pants and I'm at work right now. x(

Snide comments maybe - If Paul Tewes was going to make an accusation the Clinton campaign would know it.

I don't know any of the 'supporters' posting bullshit.

Paul is a man to be admired - and he has not claimed voter suppression.
