TX Caucus News: Obama Attorney Crashes Clinton Conference Call, Clinton Camp Whines About Packets

Obama Attorney Crashes Clinton Campaign Conference Call
04 Mar 2008 09:00 pm

On a Clinton campaign conference call to discuss reports of Obama-inspired voting irregularities in Texas, the second question belonged to Bob Bauer.

"Repeat that?" asked an incredulous -- and bemused -- Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director.

Bob Bauer, Barack Obama's chief counsel.

"How is this any different than the series of complaints registered against every caucus that you lose?"

Wolfson disputed that.

"I would ask you," he said to Bauer, "to join with us this evening to ensure that the serious problems that are ongoing this evening are addressed."

Bauer asked Wolfson, in turn, to "stop attacking the caucus process."

After some arguing about Nevada, Bauer ceded the floor to a reporter.

Caucus Problems In Texas
04 Mar 2008 08:28 pm

The Clinton campaign said tonight that Obama precinct workers illegally obtained caucus packets in the following Texas caucus precincts:

Precinct 2316 in Tarrant County
Precinct 1205 in Dallas County
Precinct 3127 in Bexar County
Precinct 3082 in Ft. Bend County
Precinct 18/224 in Harris County (Houston)
Precinct 3221 Dallas county
Precinct 87 in El Paso County
Precinct 458 in Travis County

Basically, whoever "gets the packet" controls the caucus. Technically, before the caucus begins at 7:15 CT, the packet is controlled by the precinct judge. But in reality, it might just be laying on a table somewhere. The Clinton campaign claims to have evidence that Obama supporters have, in eight instances, obtained in far in advance, which violates the rules set out by the state party.

There's nothing the state party can or will do. They're overwhelmed at the moment.

"I think it's fair to say that we are going to make sure that our folks know that they can object to the decisions of the chair. We're going to make sure that we raise our objections," says Guy Cecil, Clinton's national political director.

Cecil stopped short of saying that the campaign intends to challenge the results in any way.... the Clinton campaign knows it will be seen as obstructionist if it utters the word "lawsuits"

Objectively, the process seems very messy and the state party seems in over its head.

11. You know...
Considering that we KNOW the Republickers are going to cheat in the General Election, maybe our Primary should be awarded not just to the best candidate, but to the best cheater.

We may need either Obama or Hillary to cheat in order to erase some of the unfair advantage the Repukes have from THEIR cheating.

Okay, on second thought, that's lame, isn't it?

23. I Wouldn't Say That, Exactly
This past week, HC has gone negative on BO, finally - and accepted the heat for it - because the press has refused to hold his campaign to the same standard as they are hers.

13. The reality is the fabled ClintonInc Machine was not prepared and understaffed.
Remember, just two weeks ago, they admitted to not even knowing how the "Texas Two-Step" worked (Google "Hillary" + "grown men crying"). Today, they were still over 1000 volunteers short and their field operation was in a chaotic shambles. They are whining.

Those who have ever worked on/with a campaign know shit like this goes on. Obama's people were just a step ahead this time.

Let's be honest. This is just another trumped up charge meant by Hillary's camp, meant to discredit the caucus system. "Caucuses don't count!" :eyes:

14. I've talked to friends who went to caucuses here in WA and they said
they'd never seen such poor behavior at caucuses, in twenty years of attending. And it was Obama supporters, who were bullying Clinton people.

8. So they're complaining about who controlled the caucus! After
educating their staff to take those positions first. Man, what is the difference except an advantage? Did Obama beat them at their own game?

15. No worse than what the Ohio governor did...
Changing the rules so paperwork has to be turned in 11 days in advance, when there is only 8 days left.

17. It's "first come-first serve." Seems the ClintonInc Machine was broken down.
Actually, I can appreciate the Clinton Camp's frustration as this may have effectively worked to pre-empt their planned strong-arm planned tactics.

Bauer's conference call ambush

Barack Obama's top lawyer, Bob Bauer, made an unexpected appearance on the Clinton campaign's conference call this evening, calling in on a line intended for reporters to challenge Clinton aides' claims of irregularities in several Texas precincts.

Bauer used his guerrilla appearance to call on Clinton's aides to "stop attacking the caucus process."

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson eagerly engaged Bauer on what quickly became one of the campaign's sharpest exchanges, and possibly the most entertaining conference call in campaign history — which you can listen to above, courtesy of 2008Central.net.
