Day to Day, July 26, 2005 · Alex Chadwick talks with Bruce Reed, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, about this week's meeting of the Democratic Leadership Council, a centrist party organization. The group has appointed Hillary Clinton to define a party agenda for the upcoming 2006 and 2008 elections.

Centrist Democrats have chosen Clinton to lead the American Dream Initiative

Bruce Reed, President of the DLC, Domestic Policy Council under Bill Clinton, tries to explain that Clinton is not a liberal:

"She's been involved in the DLC a couple of decades now...so she was a natural choice..."

NPR: "But doesn't she have a reputation for being on the liberal end of the party?"

"I wouldn't say that, I've known her for fifteen years... she's a Clinton democrat from the get go ... she's always been quite culturally conservative, I worked with her on Welfare reform ... reforming the child welfare reform system ... she's a natural for this... she's been a good friend to us (the DLC) for many, many years..."

4. It shouldn't
but a lot of DUers, especially newer ones, are not aware of what this really means, it appears.

8. its the older ones that should know better that bother me.
if she gets the nod, I'll vote for her because she isn't McCain or a republican, but the more she talks and campaigns, the more she blurs that line.

19. I'm in the same boat, merh
I'll vote for her in the GE, too, if she gets the nod

And it is the more seasoned DUers who, IMHO, should understand the dynamics here.

20. I think far too many enjoy the drama and the freedom to slam
I don't envy the mods but I also think they are allowing too much name calling and too many personal attacks.

Stick to the issues, they are what matter, you know what I mean.

23. I do know what you mean
The more important issues are rarely discussed anymore, and then with only a modicum of rationality.

3. /facepalm
The DLC admires itself so much. It's sad that they'll never understand that caving into the other side doesn't win elections or advance our agenda. In fact, it gives victory after victory to Republicans and hurts our country.

Good lord, why don't the Republicans have to deal with this kind of garbage?

The DLC has never been a progressive group.

They are the infiltration of our party by covert pro-business Republicans calling themselves Democrats to triangulate towards achieving the same agenda the GOP has championed since Reagan was first elected.

5. What's the difference between a "centrist" & a "uniter"?
Is there some idea that Obama will be able to unite the congress on a far left agenda?

9. No
Liberal Democrats are screwn; marginalized.

But we both knew that, didn't we? ;)

16. DCL brand "centrism" is "centrism" in name only - its economic and social welfare conservativism...
...that is pro-choice.

Obama is not moving to the middle, his redefining the middle to the left. Not the FAR left. He is not a far-left candidate. That fight is another step in a long, long process of turning the country around. But he is exactly who we need to start laying the foundation for a cultural climate shift BACK to a more left-leaning mainstream.

Hillary isn't moving the culture anywhere. She marches straight to the right of the road, and redefines "democrat" as conservative - as is the mission of the DLC party. That she is culturally "liberal" doesn't change her economic, international and social welfare policy conservatism.

More NAFTA's, more pro business/anti worker policies.

No liberal agenda allowed.

12. No surprise here.
I'm sure it will surprise some though. Or not. Those who need to open their eyes probably won't. They'll just continue to accuse Obama of being Repub light even though that "honor" is all Hillary's. No wonder she loves her some McCain.

it would give her more naive supporters a lesson in just what the dlc is all about- and it would give me PLENTY of opportunities to say "i told you so."

They'll just redefine success, and claim that you must be a "Hater" if you don't like getting screwed over.

Just because some of the people who have endorsed him are DLC means nothing. If he were really a DLC puppet would Kennedy have endorsed him?

afraid to announce his support for one or the other.

Bottom line, though, Hillary is DLC.
