Jefferson County Democratic Party official's actions suggest favoritism
By Don Dodd, Editor
The executive director of the Jefferson County Democratic Party might have some questions to answer concerning his alleged involvement in securing free rent for the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama as well as organizing an Obama rally at Rogers Park and his introduction of Obama at a recent town hall meeting at the Julie Rogers Theatre.

Some have suggested the actions of Joseph Deshotel Jr., a paid employee of the party, call into question the impartiality of the Jefferson County Democratic Party. Joseph Deshotel Jr. is the son of State Rep. Joe Deshotel, who represents District 22 in Jefferson and Orange counties.

At least one party insider thinks that when the general public knows an employee showed favoritism to one candidate over the other, there could be uproar.

In a story from Rogers Park on Saturday, Feb. 16, NBC 4 Beaumont correspondent Kimberly Woodard reported: "Southeast Texas energy filled a small space as local supporters for Barack Obama engaged in a rally at Rogers Park. Officials with the Jefferson County Democratic Party encouraged citizens to spring into action in support of Obama.

They had information about his message, polling locations, and ways to help. Dozens of supporters arrived two hours prior to the rally in order to get involved and sign up to be a precinct captain. Because Saturday's rally was posted on the national Web site, Obama's campaign sent two representatives to train local supporters."

1. Thank goodness Texas party officials did not pick sides
Yeah right. Obama was swimming upstream all election in the face of party operatives getting in his way.

2. And has Hillary paid her backers back yet?
Since Iowa? See one of Debi's threads about a lot of Iowans getting unpaid....

Oh and NH too, and the landlord who rented her the warehouse demanded and got a paycheck - which then he donated to OBAMA!

3. This is probably the most damning.
A review of federal campaign finance laws suggests Obama's thanks to whichever Deshotel for the free rent may have been premature. Section 461 of the code makes it illegal for a corporation to make campaign contributions of cash or in-kind services to a candidate.
