Mark Penn's tangled corporate web: Clinton is a client; McCain is a client.

As has been widely reported, Hillary Clinton's top guru, Mark Penn, is leading the charge within the Clinton campaign to go aggressively negative against Obama. Besides the fact that Penn is the architect responsible for Hillary's presidential aspirations going from "inevitable" to being on life support, he is reportedly obsessed with destroying Obama. While it is understandable that Clinton's top adviser wants his client to win at all costs, going massively negative against Obama (or Hillary for that matter) risks damaging our candidate in the fall election against McCain. Unfortunately, this is something another "client" would welcome. That client is named John McCain.

Penn is the CEO of Burson-Marsteller, a DC public relations (PR) firm. Burson-Marsteller owns a subsidiary, BKSH. BKSH is run by Charlie Black. Black is a longtime Republican politico, and a top adviser for John McCain for President. And, as Think Progress notes, while Black is a volunteer on the McCain campaign, he views Mcain as his client and continues to take a paycheck from BKSH. JedReport dissected these relationships in a diary on DailyKos last night.

No friggin' wonder Clinton is endorsing McCain over Obama.

6. Even if it's been said before, I think it is worth repeating...
Mark Penn is reminiscent of Karl Rove. Bald, fat, white and ruthless.

The fact that Hillary still has him on staff makes me continually question her judgment.

32. This demonstrates incredibly poor judgement on Clinton's part.
Penn's conflict of interest is so blatant, how could she ever employ him? Did she know McCain was a client? Maybe she was duped.

I wondered who was responsible for the negative campaign. It is bad advice on its own because it alienates everyone who is sitting on the fence and is sick of this kind of same kind of crap we have put up with for at least eight years. The generally uninformed might go for it. Hillary supporters would go for it and I guess it kind of energizes her base -- but it is incredibly short-sighted.

The worst mistake in the negativity is Clinton herself pushing it. It really tarnishes her. This kind of stuff should have been pushed by whisper campaigns and campaign operatives, not the candidate herself. That's why a lot of people perceive that she has gone "too far."

It's not the negativity that is turns me off about Clinton. It is the astoundingly bad judgment she has demonstrated in her campaign.

33. Really highlights why the Clinton and McCain campaigns always
appear to be on the same message.

I think you are on target with questioning her judgement. If the campaign reflects how she would govern, we perhaps need to be as concerned about the governance of a Clinton WH as we are about the Bush WH now.
