As a Mississippian, Wyoming is more important than my state for momentum ...
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 02:29 PM by Alhena
judging by polls, the state that has disappointed me so often in the past will do so again by splitting along racial lines. I'm white and will vote Obama on Tuesday, but most of my poor state will just use this contest as another episode in the eternal battle between the races here, even though Hillary insulted our state. The thing is, most people here are nice and decent folks and most of them get along fine with folks in the opposite race. They just can not get over the notion that any political contest is another opportunity to play the old game between the races.

White Mississippians don't have a Republican presidential race to vote in, so the final margin of Obama's victory could be anywhere from 5 to 25 points depending upon how many white Republicans realize that they can vote in the open primary and bother to do so. It's a pretty meaningless race as far as trying to determine national momentum, though- Wyoming is much more significant because the people there actually seem to vote on issues and things like that. *Sigh*

1. As a Mississippian, I disagree.
There is a Republican ticket with OTHER state elections besides the presidental election on it.

A lot of factors will play into the Mississippi election...same as with other states.

Wyoming has 1% African American population. How you can say that this makes their primary more representative of America is just beyond me. If you don't think racism exists in other states, you're blind or ignorant.

If that were a state in isolation, good lord.

4. Wyoming is probably the single least representative state in the whole country.

11. It's also a fine state. I've been down there many times.
Are there many social advances to be desired? Certainly. However, I feel the state is slowly moving in the right direction. Hell, it has more progressive taxation than MA.

6. That's right- forgot about the race for Wicker's seat- that's good for Obama
as Desoto County and areas like that are extremely white and would help out Hillary.

10. The author also said that there is no Republican ticket...
Which is also wrong.

Mississippi also has more delegates than Wyoming, so, sad to say, the thread author is wrong on both counts.

13. I meant no presidential one. I forgot about the 2 congressional Republican primaries
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 02:40 PM by Alhena
that's actually a good break for Obama to have both Chip Pickering and Roger Wicker resign from the House, thus opening up Republican primaries. That will draw away white votes in 2 of the 4 congressional districts- the two whitest and most heavily Republican. That's good at least.

7. I'm amazed that any decent Mississippian would vote for HRC after her condescending, hateful insult
to the fine people of your state.

15. Do you think she will win the white vote by 40 points?
That's what some polls have shown. I expect her to win the white vote but I was surprised that the polls showed that big of a gap.

17. I have no idea- nothing in this state surprises me any more. After Katrina ...
the bible thumpers even tried to stop the casinos from rebuilding on the Gulf Coast and they came very close to succeeding. Mind you, these casinos are the only hope of the coast area to recover economically from Katrina and yet we almost stopped it from happening.

This is my home and I love a lot about the state and its people, but politically the whole scene just makes me shake my head in amazement.

19. I do.
50% of whites polled in MS said they would never consider voting for Obama. We'll have to drag them kicking and screaming into the 20th century.

...and then the 21st.
