7. Obama is winning in red states because

he is the one Democrat in the race that they can work with. Clinton represents the politics of ramming your agenda through while you're in power. Obama represents the shifting of political will in this country toward finding common ground instead of fighting all the time. That's how to get things done.

15. I'm for Obama, but I disagree with your characterization of the GOP

Since when do Republicans "reach across the aisle," unless it's to give Lieberman a hand job? The HRC rhetoric does remind me of Bush's sense of the reach of executive power and the role of government, and the GOP would not want to be a minority party against that. But I can't attribute Obama's popularity among likely crossover Repubs to that analysis. I thin k they like someone who seems genuine and talks of values in a way that makes them feel good to be an American. Bush made them feel good about themselves, in a selfcentered, jingoistic, hedonistic, lazy way. Old-fashioned Republicans think they're people of character, and Obama appeals to that sensibility.

17. The current GOP leadership is like that, you're right.

Autocratic, and all that goes with it.

Their base has moved on. Seen the light, so to speak. There are a lot more independents than their are members of either party, at least in spirit. Few subscribe so entirely to a platform as posters on messageboards. The rest don't feel at home with either party.

What I'm describing is the spirit of change sweeping the country. It is inclusive. It really transcends party.

Obama is right to say that no side has a monopoly on good ideas. There are a few on the right, such as limited government, but they would do well to incorporate ideas on the left, such as placing limits on surveillance and insisting on independent oversight. Arriving at consensus does not have to mean compromise.
