How to make GDP a decent forum again.
Sign off on the following and you'll do OK:

1) Your candidate is not God and the opposing candidate is not the Devil.

2) There are decent supporters and there are irrational asshats in both camps.

3) When you meet an irrational asshat, on either side, put them on ignore.

4) Keep reminding yourself that we've all got to live with each other in the fall.

Wash, rinse, repeat. :hi:

1. Wait till the primaries are over.
That's the only thing that will make GDP decent again. Actually, we won't even need a GD:P after the primaries.

3. I currently have 143 on the ignore list.
And I'm sure I'm on their list as well.

Which, at this point, is fine by me.

4. Or
Just put the whole damn place on Ignore. :)

Another possibility? Turning off the computer, getting outside, and actually working for the process and the candidates.

Hi, hon! :loveya:

8. hey girl!
I'd agree!

But sometimes it's nice to have a place to hang when chilling out after a hard day of giving out pushcards and some such.
I need to get back by the clubhouse. Did wolvie tell you I had 400 at my caucus? :wow:

16. No, she didn't!
Excellent! :toast:

You know, when I first joined DU, I had no idea what the purpose of GDP was, because it just seeemed like a nice, quiet library, and not all that different from GD. Then someone explained that the 2004 primaries were really ugly, and I thought, how ugly could it have been? Okay, I get it now.

The two people I have on Ignore are haters, and although I never thought I'd need to ignore anyone, I'm sad to report it does actually make me feel better when they're not around.

I just think if most of the people would put their actions where their keyboards are (like you have, you :patriot:, you), we would have a much more productive community.

Yes, please come back. Bot's still chained to the bed and he needs the key. :)

5. Good list and I would add one more to it
5) Your candidate's success in the primary and general election depends in part on the other candidate's supporters.

I never used ignore before now. But some people are just persistently unpleasant. On both sides.

17. It never really was, and it sort of shouldn't be
Yes, the blinkered, self-congratulatory oversimplicity that so many cling to is nauseating, but it's an accurate representation of the human condition.

Yes, the degree of nastiness people will resort to when their champion is assailed is tiresome and reeks of fragile egos that need to win everything because they're haunted by a fear of being sub-standard themselves.

Yes, it would be nice (for some, I suppose) to have a reliable cybersalon to gently parse the issues of the day, but that's not what this place is about.

Remember: much as so much ickiness abounds around here, there are always some glimmering lights of reason and sense, and they wouldn't be appreciated as much if there wasn't so much petty squabbling to provide contrast.

It's the human condition, and it takes some willing suspension of nausea to keep a fair overview in one's head.

Take a break if it bugs you too much, or post something supportive to one of the many posts like this, but have no illusion: threads like this are like the gentle elderly family member at the big family gathering trying to keep the two loudmouths from coming to blows. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it's better if it doesn't.

19. well, I suppose you're right
but for me, the iggy button has made all the diff.

I don't believe there's any call for outright rudeness over this stuff, and bring able to ignore those who are complete asshats has made my continued participation here more bearable. :)
