Bill Bradley hits the Clintons...
..."Former senator Bill Bradley, who is a leading supporter of Obama and ran for president in 2000, accused the Clintons of 'lying' in pursuit of victory.

“'The bigger the lie, the better the chance they think they’ve got. That’s been their whole approach,' he said. 'She’s going to lose a whole generation of people who got involved in politics believing it could be something different.'”

Hillary Clinton sets her sights on three ways to win

Geffen said, a while back, that most politicians lie, but the Clintons do it so easily.

132. Exactly. We have several to choose from just this week.
1. Obama has less experience than Hillary (um, no. He's actually served in elected office longer)

2. Obama's campaign gave the ol' *wink wink* to Canada re: NAFTA (Oops, looks like the Clinton camp did that)

3. With Obama as President, children will die in their sleep

153. I expect he's referring generally to the misinformation campaign ...
... that the Clinton campaign referred to as their "kitchen sink" fusillade.

As one example of a "lie" (versus just ridiculous typical misinformation or the questionable promotion of a Republican candidate over a Democratic candidate), reference the NAFTAgate "wink, wink" comments by Hillary. She may have aggressively pursued them as a line of attack, wisely and skillfully, while the story was still fresh, but her continued repetition of Obama as saying one thing in public and another in private became a lie at the point that the Canadians refuted that spin.

3. Bradley dons the brass knuckles and swings hard. He's not the
first person to make a similar assessment.

At this moment in the grand scheme, we can't see too far because the fog is thick. But one thing is certain -- an awful lot of folks are eager to get the Clinton Show off the air.

The high-profile endorsement of recent weeks suggests to me that a significant core of the Democratic Party is ready to move on from the 90s and on into the new century, and that they do not feel that Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is the vehicle for that transformation.

61. How many ended up spending THEIR political capital and reputations defending Clintons and
getting nothing in return for issues important to them and most other Democrats?

I believe many see this election as an OPPORTUNITY not to be squandered with the triangulating politics of the past that had the curious result of only benefiting the powermongers of the RW establishment.

I love Bradley. Always did. Likely always will.

He's expressing a long-held frustration many have with "the Clintons" since their ascent in the 1990s.

It concerns what you say it concerns which also includes, IMO, the loss of the Senate, the loss of the public debate in favor of Newt's "Contract With America," the loss of specific progressive pressure points, and the dissolution of neighborhoods and unions and progressive affiliations.

A Democratic president in office for 8 years should have done better and should have had more to show for those 8 years than that.

I think Bradley's words, understandably harsh, rise from those frustrations.

Me too and he was my Senator
He is a fantastic person and a brilliant Senator. My husband and I saw him at a local book signing. He was speaking of his then new book (spring 2006) and some work that activists were doing to lobby for a searchable database that would let people find on any subject how Senators voted and donations by a company/interest group related to the issue. My husband wrote this on meeting him:

"My wife Karen and I went to one of Senator Bradley's book signings during the spring of 2006 at an independent bookstore in New Jersey. Bradley made a speech and brought up many of the same themes that he expressed in the 2005 NYT op ed. He brought along a videographer who was filming content for the website that Bradley had created for the book launch. When we got to the front of the line, I told "Dollar Bill" (his nickname after he signed a massive contract with the NY Knicks in the 60's) that when I was 12 I attended a famous basketball game at Madison Square Garden in 1964 at the Holiday Festival. Bradley scored 41 points and almost single handedly had given Princeton a lead against top ranked Michigan. Alas Bradley fouled out and Michigan ultimately prevailed. The Senator quizzed me to make sure I was really at the game by asking me who was the star of the Michigan team. When I correctly answered that the Michigan star was his future NY Knicks teammate, Cazzie Russell, Bradley told the video person to turn on the camera so I could tell the story. He seemed to appreciate the nostalgia. Bradley was very affable and easy to talk to. Bradley was familiar with the independent bookstore because he used to live in this area of New Jersey at the time he first ran for Senator. As a matter of fact a local Democratic Leader had told us that the party had tried to convince Bradley to run for office in Morris County (either State Senator or Congressman). Bradley had the good sense to realize that he was far more likely to be successful to run statewide rather then to run a race in our very Republican County."

seen so many times.

Good goin' on the hoops questions, by the way.

I miss Bradley. I miss his speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate in the wake of the Rodney King affair. I miss his brains and civility on health/human resources issues espeically.

I think Nominee Obama would do well to give full consideration to Bill Bradley as veep.

63. Wellstone Would Have Endorsed Obama
Wellstone towed the progressive line and repeatedly challenged Bill Clinton on things like wellfare reform, he pushed for Universal Health Care - while Hillary was pushing universal insurance (two entirely different things) and he even considered (before being shot down by party insiders) a primary challenge to Bill in 96.

No way Wellstone would have been in the Hillary camp.

I had the priviledge of campaigning for Paul Wellstone in Minnesota.
There is NO WAY Paul would have endorsed a DLC candidate.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

a small handful of decent things in 4 or 8 years, but where does that leave our party after that?

If Obama loses, he and his wife stated that he will not run again; and honestly who can blame him? The only reason they are doing it now is because the time is right in their lives. Their children are young enough to probably not remember all the headaches of a campaign, yet old enough to probably understand what is happening.

Especially if she counts her entire life after college.

"She said she and McCain had traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan together as she repeated a line that surfaced from the campaign trail. She and McCain “bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign, Clinton said, while “Sen. Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002,” stating his opposition to the Iraq war as an Illinois state senator."

http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_ive_crossed_commanderi.html

She ALSO said he told the OH people one thing and the Canadians another thing about NAFTA. That's a lie. The Canadian Parliament said there was no difference between what he said publicly and what his adviser said privately.

104. Yes it did, and Gore ran for the Dem nomination against Bradley in 2000
Gore was Clinton's vice president, so Clinton supported Gore in the 2000 primary against Bradley. Bradley lost the primary and it made him angry and he apparently still holds a grudge against the Clintons because they supported Gore.

Sorry, but I can't believe I have to explain this to fellow Democrats. BTW, I worked on Gore's 2000 primary campaign, so I know Bradley didn't win and was angry at Gore because he did.

McCain was OK in Bradley's book.

CLAREMONT, New Hampshire (CNN) -- In an unusual joint appearance, Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley and GOP presidential hopeful John McCain pledged Thursday that if they receive their party's nomination, they would completely swear off unregulated soft money campaign donations.

Mr. McCain is appealing to voters, even Democrats, not because he opposes abortion rights and gun control and favors school vouchers, Mr. Bradley said, but because "he's standing up for reform."

"And if we don't stand up for reform, we have a special vulnerability," Mr. Bradley said. "When Democrats have fund-raising scandals, it's different. Republicans are expected to be in the pockets of special interests."

114. I watched and listened to him speak in the Senate. He appeared to be like the Repukes
who won a high school president race because he was on the basketball team.

131. LOL. I'd pay some serious bucks to hear you debate this "incompetent sleaze,"
amborin.

I bet your assessment would change very shortly into the discussion.

137. That's a classic, truthful quote. The truth always comes out
"The bigger the lie, the better the chance they think they’ve got. That’s been their whole approach,"

150. Reeling nonsense
"The New York senator has unnerved Obama, who has been left reeling by a series of errors from senior policy advisers"

I don't think this is correct.
He doesn't strike me as either unnerved or reeling.

151. Bill Bradley? Who cares what he thinks? He also ran against Gore.
(Remember: Obama supporters' "Who cares what Gen. Clark thinks?")
