"Look it up" No, you fucking look it up.
Man I am tired of this line. "look it up".

If you(that's right both Hillary and Obama supporters are guilty of this) are going to post some "facts" about someone or something, then take the time to look up the facts, get your links and post them. If you feel you have something important to share, by all means share it. But goddammit you better have some links to facts to back you up. Don't start posting shit and then demand that the person who questions your "facts" to look it up. If you have actual facts, please post them, with the proper links or at least explain where they came from. I really don't have time to chase down every lead or every story I see here. If you want your candidate to win, posting some crap and then telling people to "look it up" isn't the way to go about it.

2. I second that! I always suspect if a link isn't
provided, there's a reason. Like the source is questionable, or the pertinent context is edited out, etc. Links are a good thing!

5. If you're trying to convince someone of something, why start out by
insulting them with a "Google is your friend"? If someone takes the bait and asks for info, set the hook and give it to them!

6. Hear, hear.
If someone makes a statement in an argument with someone else, it is THAT PERSON'S RESPONSIBILITY to cite chapter and verse attesting to the truth of what he or she says. No fair expecting your opponent to go research your facts and then realize the wisdom of your argument.

7. Yeah, but there's a corollary to your dictum
Which is, don't post shit about a candidate without looking things up first. Don't ask a question (e.g., "Did Obama ever go to Iraq?" or "Did Hillary release her tax returns?" without at least making a 10-second attempt to google.

This would not only cut down on the number of dumb posts, but also on the amount of time others have to invest in doing the work for people.

Also ... I think a lot of these posts are intentionally misinformational, because posters know people will often read only the thread title, thus making an untruth forever ingrained as a headline (no matter how many people post links to evidence to the contrary in the body of the thread).

Just like the mainstream media! And just as offensive.

So yeah, look it up yourself (in some cases).

9. Yeah, that too.
"Do due diligence before asking a question" and "If you want to impart a fact, cite your source" are two excellent rules.

8. Thank you
It has always been customary at DU to back up with verifying text and links. We've become a place where anything, but anything can be said and believed. It's taken a terrible toll on DU and the DU archives.

10. Amen.
My general rule of thumb is that it's incumbent upon the person making any assertion to provide factual documentation for consideration.

That's the starting point and without initial "proof" presented at that time, the assertion may rightly be discounted.

14. I agree and challenge people all the time to give me a link
They hardly ever respond to me.

And then I will see them in the next thread making the same lame assertions, which others adopt and begin repeating.

And I agree with poster above about people reading the whole text. It is crazy to see a post that has been up for less than 5 minutes and has 7 or more recommendations clearly based on the inflammatory title alone.

That yet another link is unnecessary.

And frankly, we're just arguing here anyway. Nobody is going to change anybody's mind, with our without a link.

An example should be to a DU address, everyone knows a youtube address won't have a discussion of it. you should have hidden the link in a blue word.

19. You seem to have forgotten that everything changed after 9/11
Just kidding. Well, sort of. DU has changed a lot since 9/11. Mostly because we have so many more posters. A lot of people went onto the internet after 9/11 and in the build-up to the Iraqi War. Most of them were looking for some validation that they had not gone crazy and that the GOP was really using both 9/11 and Saddam to further their warped agenda.

But I hear you. The "look it" crap gets old. It is especially annoying when someone posts a thread that is ambiguous to begin with and then when someone asks "what" or for some facts, they're told to go look it up. At this point, I'm undecided (bordering on "I don't care anymore"). For the first since 1980 I'm not volunteering for a presidential nominee's campaign. I need to be convinced and the "look it" crap doesn't endear a supporter's candidate to me.

21. Common knowledge and obvious facts shouldn't have to be linked.
I'm tired of people asking for links when anyone following the election news (and that's what we do here) is already common knowledge and old news.

29. Exactly!
I for one, am not going to play into hands of disingenuous morons who are playing dumb as if they don't know, just for sake of doing so. If I find that someone is asking for knowledge sincerely, I oftentimes will supply it. But if they're just being trollish morons or trying to act as if I was born yesterday with their transparent insincerity, then they can go fuck themselves.
